Edited by: Canadian Fire on 07/07/2009 12:23:20 Well, I'm not exactly a new character, but this forum seemed the most appropriate. And this thread can also be read by newer players to aid them, so it probably works out.
CCP will slap the thread if it doesn't, so it shouldn't matter.
I've recently been asked for my FULL API key to join a corporation. (Oooh, le gasp)
After a bit of digging, I found out that the API key can give away a bunch of stuff, not including your password and whatnot, but I've still got a few questions, located for your viewing pleasure below.
(A) Can the full API key give away personal things like chat logs/eve mails and screen shots? I dunno what they'd gain from Looking at my epic screenies, but since I would be leaving a 0.0 power with POS/outposts I'd rather any information given away concerning ops and whatnot remain with the alliance/corp. Let the actual spies give it away.
(B)Is there any information given out by the API key that could be used to harm me or my in-game friends in some way, like for example telling where I/we camp gates in lowsec or which places I like to travel through, so they could ambush me or something. This might be a bit ridiculous, but someone spent a few months befriending me and even invited me to his corp until I trusted him enough to pvp with him in a considerably expensive ship compared to what I usually fly, then he and his gangmates promptly locked and destroyed it. The lengths people go to in this game for a bunch of text saying you blew something up continues to astound me.
(C) I want your opinion. Should I join? I was really into it at first, but after learning that they want my full API I'm sorta more paranoid about them now. I'm not sure what they would hope to gain from learning where my thousands of tons of random sh!t are kept and how much money is in my wallet, but there might be some nefarious purpose they have in mind.
(D) How do you read the information given out by the API key? I'd at least like to see what info I'm giving away before I hand it out willy-nilly to a complete stranger. Answering this one question should let me answer the other three by my own means, but answering them to would be excellent and make me very grateful.
Some might think I'm being too concerned about this. Truth is I probably am. But hey, better safe than sorry.
