Heya, Alt is sitting about 26mil SP, and has generally been a good mission runner in Highsec. I currently have no plans to throw him into low/null sec space, but whilst playing with EveMON i noticed he was a shallow 5 days from dread, 7 from carrier.
Here's the question: is it worth it to spend the cash on the books and train these skills?

Well you need supports for those ships which means at least a month, not 6 or 7 days. Do you want to fly a cap? Is it useful to your corp? Pew Pew Lazorz!!! |

Purely a matter of what you intend to do in EvE in the future.
Is your corp joining a 0.0 alliance? Do you hang out in Low Sec? Either way, you'll need somewhere outside of High Sec to dock the cap.
Certainly, as a solo player, having the ability to fly a cap ship will make you more recruitable to a 0.0 Corp if you have any future plans along that path.
Personally, I'd just ask myself one question. "Where do I want to be in EvE in six months?" and take it from there.

While you might think you're days away from a capital, it's pretty unlikely that you are in practical terms, unless you've trained for it specifically. The big difference is usually Navigation Skills - ASC V, JDO V, JDC/JFC IV are pretty good minimums to fly a capital ship effectively. You'll also want capital armor/shield rep at III or IV. For a dread - capital weapon system at IV and TWR IV. For a carrier, Fighters IV and whatever remote rep the race uses at III or IV. There's also the Capital Ships skill, which is minimum III for Carriers, I believe. Finally, you'll want the racial carrier/dread skill at IV.
That said, while you may have no plans to go to 0.0, training some of those skills can substantially increase the value of the character if you might consider selling it at a future date. If you decide to go that route, I suggest doing Nav skills first. In general, I believe Dread pilots to be in greater demand than Carrier pilots, though some purchasers may be very interested in a Carrier pilot who has the skills for Triage (Logistics V, and the Triage skill itself whose name I can't recall).

The better question is... why does a mission runner have a JF/Rorq/Titan?
Because he must have one of the mentioned if he already have jump skills.

Cap ships take several months of specific training .It IS worth it IF you want to fly a cap ship later . If not then you should put those months into re-inforcing skills you already have . A cap pilot is more recruitable , and more valuable , but try not to get caught up in training skills for other people . Train what you want for yourself.

Why does your mission running character have Advanced Spaceship Command 5?
