Okay I played EVE back in the beta and I do not recall invention or R&D agents in the game. I also apologize if there is another post on this, usually I do a fairly through search for my answers before posting. With that in mind let me get to my question.
I started this character for the purposes of inventing T2 ships for my main. I am currently training all the needed skills up so I can get started, but I am trying to gather knowledge on the agents while I wait the training out. I read somewhere (I think on the wiki) that if you have a sufficient standing with your agent, then they will research for you. This eventually leads to RP and datacores, but my question is starting at 0.00 standing with Roden Shipyards will I be doing any combat/mining related missions to build my standings or will I just be doing stuff related to R&D?

well you read right. When you have high enough standings you will be able to research. Getting those standings is the hard part. You can look across the various divisions with the corporation, i.e. look to see if they have command agents for combat missions, or administration if you like courier missions. once you start the "grind" up the corporate standing ladder you will need to get to the appropriate corporate level standing. You will also need to know whick datacore you will want to research (make sure that the agent that you are gunning for will be able to get you the datacores that you want) You will need to get that skill to either 1,2,3, or 4 depending on the agent level that you are trying to research with. Hope this helps somewhat.

You grind standing with the corporation, so you can use any division in that corporation.
I'm currently grinding Lai Dai standing, and boy is the Manufacturing division a pain; so far 99% courier, 0.5% combat, 0.5% mining. I find Administration is ok (did that for Carthum Conglomerate), and Advisory is on the edge of tolerable.
If you do courier, I found that a Heron holds just over 400 m3 with an expander, has 6 au warp, and aligns very fast.

I haven't seen any storyline agents for Lai Dai, a pain as the storylines give a larger standing boost.
For the OP: note that doing mission for R&D agents don't give standing. Those missions only give RP (Research Points), not standing, but count for getting a storyline.

According to Eve-Agents, Lai Dai doesn't have any storyline agents at all, so that's one you have to do the hard way.
