"I am flying a Scythe-class Cruiser" or "I am in a cruiser-class ship"?
"The enemy fleet has a number of Naglfar-class Dreadnoughts" or "Their capital fleet includes Dreadnought-class ships"?
"The Titan is a capital-class ship" or "The Amarr have unveiled the new Avatar-class Titan"?
Sorry, but this has been bugging me for a while, and I can't find any evidence of what is 'proper' =) ____________________________________________________________

I'd prefer hearing the second one, if you absolutely have to sound like a total douche on TS.

Anyone with a definitive answer? I don't read enough sci-fi to know this too well :P ____________________________________________________________

Well in current naval terms you would say something like a Nimitz class Aircraft Carrier, or Ticonderoga class cruiser.

If you want to make sense when reporting large fleet you use cruiser or dreadnought. If you start rattling off counts of each individual hull for a 200man fleet your FC will shoot you.

That one is the proper sci-fi use I believe, but as said above, not exactly the best one to use on voice comms.

I've put in bold the proper statements. The 'class' is the general name used for a ship 'type'. This has been standard naval tradition for hundreds of years and what is generally used in most science fiction.

I dont think there is a "propper" use of the word class in sci-fi, other than what the writers decide. Even in the real world I think different navies use different conventions for naming classes of ships. I know that in the US Navy the class is named for the first ship completed with that design (i.e. the New Jersey class Battleship is called that cause USS New Jersey was the first one built). But a couple days ago I was trying to look up ship names and found out (if you believe Wikipedia :P) that there was a British "C-Class" destroyer which was a group of similar ships instead of a bunch with the same exact hull design.
So I'd say use it however you want or however you see CCP use it... but listen to the guy who said not to do it when passing intel in gang :P +++ "Etiquette is for the Dojo. In war there is only victory or death." - Eiji Yoshikawa |

No, it's a Broadsword class Heavy Interdictor.
It is modeled after a Rupture class cruiser. ============================================= "Only the dead have seen the end of war" - Plato

It's a sci-fi game, so it's up to the creators/players which way it is said.
