And want to put the $100 or so for Windows into hardware instead. A couple of questions though:
1. I've heard ATI cards and Linux don't get along well is this true?
2. I was thinking of buying two cheaper graphics cards and a board with crossfire support. Does anyone here have any experience with this?
3. Does anyone know what the minimum graphics requirements for being in a fleet fight with brackets on and a descent frame rate is?

1. On EVE, If you are using the latest ATI driver (Cata 9.6), will will not see a difference.
2. Take a big one like the 4670 or 4870 serie! SLI or Crossfire are not so good on Linux.
3. Take the 4870 for better performance at high or a 4670 for good performance but with lower settings just to be sure.
I run 3 EVE account with a 4870 here.

answer alternative #2
1) It's true Getting a Nvidia 96++ or better will make ur linux box have a better performance compared with an ATI card 2)Hmmm not worth it even on windows . better get a good sole one as it requires less watts :) 3)No but u shouldn't have problems with a good pc i guess +card with working drivers.
The other story is if u re using windows too which in that case the ATI is the best value for its money.
Personally i m on linux 95% of my time so and my 9600GT passes with flying colors --------------------------- My Signature!!!! |

I seen that ATi drivers are playing a lot of catchup but they are better than a year ago.
In terms of power a 8600 GeForce or 37xx Radeon would be a good minumum to work up from to get good performance. The 4770 offers the current best performance to cost ratio.
Crossfire also has some serious problems in Windows systems so i'm assuming that Linux systems will simply have a heart attack at the oppurtunity. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

I found the 8800GT was great value for money when it came out and even better value upon it's update along with the 9800's.
A quick price check shows the GTX275 is the new best value performance card. That's the one I'd recommend if buying an nVidia now.
EDIT: It's also about 80% more GFLOPS and over double the memory speed of the 8800GT I have.

Get the Nvidia 9800GT, it is the same 8800GT with a little firmware update, and its around 100$.
Bad idea getting 2 cheaper cards. If you want to SLI, start with the 9800gt (get 2 of them), BUT, you need a strong PSU, 700+ watts (yes, i tried with a 600w thermaltake and failed...)
My rates with fleet blobs/POS etc (600 in local) with the athlon x2 6000 and a single 8800/9800gt is around 15fps, it is higher with a faster cpu, but i have graphics effects maxed ;)
Small gangs and typical flying tops the vsync at 60fps, at 1680x1050.
BTW: Windows 7 will be 300$, so you could spend that money in video gear :) And lets not forget Office (500$?), and assorted software (Photoshop?, Windows Server?) you could be wasting your money into.

Just a small advise: never go with CrossFire or SLI when you can get the same performance from a single card.
You will only be wasting electricity, increase the noise level and heat emission, you will need a good board and PSU for doing SLI/CF, and some stuff will either not run with SLI/CF or only bring a small improvement.
Rather keep looking for a good single GFX card, and do not mind if it is NVidia or ATI, as long as it is one of them two manufacturers. |
