Can somebody give me the basics to container mining? I assume I would haul a bunch of secure containers to a belt with an indy, anchor them, come back with a decent mining ship and fill them quickly, come back with my indy, reload all of the secure containers and haul them back to station for reprocessing? Also can you load ores into the secure containers after it has been jettisoned or does it have to be in your cargo hold?
Thanks |

Can mining is easy, but you have to keep on your toes - with high enough skill levels, you'll mine more than your cargohold can carry with one cycle of the lasers.
What you laid out is the basic concept behind can mining - you can also can mine into an unsecure jettison can (which holds considerably more than a giant secure container) but you run the risk of can thieves and can bombers.
As far as moving ore from can/can and can/cargo, as long as you have access rights to the container you're moving to and from, there's no restrictions.
One thing that you might want to consider is not picking up and reanchoring your "mining" containers - just carry a full set in your industrial, and leave the ones you're mining into anchored where they are - it's much quicker and you can set instajumps up for them.

Edited by: Badshah on 01/10/2004 19:28:58 I tried naming my jet cans, "Small (Secured)" but nobody ever fell for it and I get getting ripped off. So I just try to work with a buddy in a hauler now-a-days. It's funner and easier. Just me, Bad |

Yeah. Seems to be thieves in .5-1.0, bombers in .1-.4, and you don't worry about your ore as much as yourself in 0.0 :) ---

If you're going to mine with drones, ideally you want to be placed literally right on top of a small rock and let your drones have at it while you target other rocks within range of your lasters.
That said, what you described is very, very painful. Secure containers have less cargo space - so you'll be emptying it more often - plus they have to be anchored a ways away from the rocks (unless they changed that). You'll be gathering less ore with drones (since they will have to travel now instead of being right on top of the rocks).
So I'd suggest what others here have suggested - and that's to just jettison a can in space. I usually name it "Giant Secure Container" in attempt so trick ore thieves - again, like others have mentioned. Another thing you can do to reduce the chances of getting hit with by an ore thief is to mine in 0.6 or 0.5 sec systems. There's better ore there anyway, and less chances to get hit by them.
Another thing I wanted to add is the idea of using a bookmark when you need to haul, if you don't do this aready:
1. Find the station you are hauling to in the horizon 2. Line the centerpoint of your ship up with the station at 15km away from the can. In the end, the station, the can and the center of your ship should all look like they are on top of each other with you 10-15km from the can. A lot of times this is much easier if you travel too var in the direction opposite of the station and can (ex: 25km) and then turn around and come back, making adjustments along the way. 3. Click "keep location" in your people and places and label your mark. Warp out and come back with your hauler to that bookmark "within 15km". You should be right on top of your hauling can. 4. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
That makes it much much easier to haul and mine with the same character over and over again. Hope that is helpful.
