Was just reading an article about "Steam" browser but i cant figure out what it does actually. Is this a kind of browser like IE,Firefox where you can open eve-online in it to play Eve-online trough the browser port or something? Is this a way to play eve in a browser to bypass company firewall security and stuff. Can somebody give some info about this because it seems interesting but also looks suspicious tbh.

the steam browser is just a program for managing your games and buying new ones. its not the same meaning of "browser" than IE/firefox

Forgive me if I may be so bold, but using Linux (Or Unix, but Linux is probably more likely to run Eve) one might have a game at home running in an x11 environment and then you can use x11 on your work computer. Indeed, though, Steam is only for games. In some Steam games (perhaps Eve, too. I don't use it.) one can open an overlay unassociated with the game itself to communicate with one's friends playing steam games at the same time, so this might give it sort of a browser association. But the game itself it a separate process, and you can't bypass the firewall.
(Oh, I guess you could use a proxy, but, hey. I like the linux idea better.)

There is a browser built into the Steam game overlay (toggleable transparent window ontop of game), just IE without some features (no tabs for example). Useful if you are running EvE fullscreen and don't want to alt-tab.
Maybe this is what the article was about?
Also, toggleable is now a word.

if you buy games frequently and you have friends, get steam. Its a must, and anyway its free. The game you buy on it are not, but the special and what not are always less costy than the boxed games, and I like that, at least in Quebec. You can also get games that you have totaly forgoten for ridiculus prices like monkey island that recently went out on the steam platform for 9.99$. PLUS if you call in the next 20 minutesyou get 3 more monkey island and a free panda.
Ok I derailed a little bit but you get the point, its a must have. =================================================

Since EVE is a Direct3d game, the video card writes directly to video memory. So no, you can't use X11 forwarding to play EVE, or any kind of remote desktop.

Remote desktopping works perfectly, you just have to ensure you don't use any mirror or subsitute drivers but ensure the system uses the DirectX drivers to create the picture and then remote desktop will relay the picture.
For Steam Overlay it uses a Trident layout engine similary found in IE6/7/8. Although it is NOT the same as IE but uses it as every Microsoft system has it. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |
