Please help. :(
A friend of mine can't enter the game. She can log into the game. she can even select a character. But when she has picked a character and wants to play the screen turns black and stays black. She can then still hear station sounds and game sounds. She can even see friends logging in in the righthand corner of ths screen, but the screen stays black, until she hits escape. When she hits escape (options menu) she can see the world and the place she is in (a station) in the background. But she is then in the options menu, and once she hits escape again its black again. We've tried a lot of things, heres what we tried:
We tried creating a new character We tried downloading and installing the newest ATI drivers We tried downloading and installing the newest omega drivers We did fully uninstall the old drivers each time we tried new ones using the proper tools We tried clearing the cache, once without deleting prefs.ini, the second time with deleting prefs.ini We tried putting the desktop resolution to different resolutions We tried reinstalling the game entirily We tried setting the properties of eve.exe to win98 mode
This is the system she has: Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 System Model: PC106A-ABA a610n BIOS: Rev. 3.10 Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz Memory: 1024MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b Card name: RADEON 9800 PRO (Omega 2.5.76) Display Memory: 128.0 MB Realtek AC97 Audio
One important notice, she is currently on dial up. But we already tried waiting an hour, and other more taxing games do work, so eve-online should work too i guess. Please if this looks familiar to you help us because we are going crazy here, nothing works. Thanks in advance. :)

You will probably have to use EVE's logserver.exe application to generate a log of the problem that contains all the game variables and internal states. Instructions on how to do that can be found here. Also run dxdiag.exe and save all info to a text file, and include that in the zipped file you'll use to send the log.
Then use the tech support ask a question page and make sure that you choose the Tech Suppor category and the Logging In subcategory, and you can attach the zip file containing your log and your dxdiag.txt in there. I'm pretty sure they can look at it and figure out exactly what EVE is doing and why it has that black screen. May take a while for them to respond, but they should be able to help.

You might want to try reinstalling the EVE client.

Edited by: TicklePink on 27/09/2004 23:36:39 ok..this card is mine.. -Ive installed latest drivers for ATI radeon 9800 pro. -Ive installed omega drivers. -I also uninstalled old drivers before installing new. -I set compatability of my client to all operating systems and tried to login at each one. -Ive tried every MHZ setting on my monitor..(which is 4-5 yrs old) from 60-85 mhz. -Ive set my monitor setting to all resolutions and all bits. (While ingame).. -I also have set and unset all graphics options including interlace and dither and high /medium /low. -I even turned down my sound acceleration to nill cause there have been some windows updates that conflicted the sound acceleration with ATI's video drivers. (Its not a reinstall issue either) -..reinstalled game and drivers all fresh 3 times.
(When I log in..) -I get the character selection screen..however..the characters faces never show..they stay exclamation marks..I have also tried logging in alts...and creating a new character..the character creation screen doesnt load..it stays blue.
-On occasion when choosing a character..and the character screen fades..and the window says "loading character".."getting character"..all that happenes..(even the sounds of the station begin to waft thru the speakers)...no visual station enviroment.
-I hit "esc" inorder to bring up the generic and graphics options window..and BEHOLD..the typical blurred station that my character is sitting in..appears miraculously...in the background..but (as soon as I close the prefs window)..its back to blackness. I usually play this game on cable connection and have recently been forced to dialup..so..I thought it may be a time issue..while in the blackness..I took a nap..came back..and still..no picture..so..has anyone had this problem?..is there a secret line of script in prefs ini?.... something I could turn off or turn on..maybe theres a graphics supression line?...something?....maybe a new line of text I could insert into the cache that showed or loaded the station enviroment?...I went to alot of trouble to get new hardware to play this game better..and now I cant even see what Im doing.-Thanx-TicklePink

Edited by: TicklePink on 28/09/2004 00:09:50 Oh yea..I also got intouch with the support team..sent them my dxdiag file..and also tried the logon server tool..the server tool prevents me from loading the character selection screen...and I received promplty from the GMs (first and foremost) an apology for being being so busy and a request of me to be patient ..and THEN a GM was nice enough to unstuck me from one all black system..to the all black system next door..so....I feel as if Im missing something..anyone?..please?-Tickles(P.S. my original video card is integrated and I figured that installing the ATI would simply turn that off.there are no manual jumpers and the eve client only recognizes the ATI as my vid card..so..I dont think that would be a problem..would it?)

Edited by: TicklePink on 30/09/2004 02:35:16 ok..the only thing Ive left to do..is download service pack 2 from Microsoft..it blows my mind that a two week old update from windows could possibly be whats keeping me from playing EVE. I cant get a character creation screen..I have a free spot to create a new alt...I figured..since i was on dialup..maybe it was an info issue..maybe too much info on my main to effeciently load the actual game..but..now/..that I cant seem to get the character screen..and also..none of my friends portraits or my portraits are loading..ever..no matter how long I wait.....so..realistically..downloading SP-2 on dialup is..atleast a 48 hour download..at the worst?..three days?..Im wondering..since my montior is a 5 year old Acer 77e..should I set refresh at 60 hz and 1024 X 768 16 bit and also set the game at that as well?
I had a friend who showed me one time a line I could enter into prefs that gave me an extra option for the ATI card..something that allowed me to introduce antialiasing and show the game at really high quality.Anyone know what Im talking about?
Ive poured over soo many probs people have had sortve like this one.Ive set the game to compatibility Windows 98/ME..Ive also set all my sound acceleration to "none"..I even set my graphics acceleration to two notches below full cause that seemed to help a player.I had this prob one time before.I gm mentioned I needed to download the test client and log on my char via that client. Back then..it worked..it somehow convinced my black screen to show the game and when I tried my original client..I could see again..is anyone reading this who maybe knows?..I set my char to train a 56 day skill..and Id really like to get back to her before thats up..hehehe..Thanx.-Tickles

Hi!
I had this happen to me also. I got around it by deleting the contents of the cache directory... /program files/ccp/eve/cache
Delete all of it and then log back into the same. You'll lose your settings, but you should be back in.
Good Luck!

Uhm, we already tried that. In the top post you can see what we already tried. In fact i've gone and checked a hundred forum pages, and there was this problem at least every other page. Every solution so far unfortunatly hasn't worked. From deleting cache to starting a new character, from updating drivers to reinstalling the game, nothing works and her screen stays black after selecting a character. CCP helpdesk also doesn't seem to be able to offer a solution so far.

250 watt with Radeon 9800 might be not enough if you have lots of stuff in computer, those cards take a lot of power. I'd suggest you put a stronger power supply and check it then.
Btw, as you didn't write that - what about other DirectX games/applications? Do they work fine? 3DMark for example?

I know this won't help with this user's problem, but I had the same black screen issue and filed a Stuck petition - within half an hour a GM had moved me to a station and things were working fine again. Just thought I'd mention that to anyone who has the black problem and hasn't tried getting moved.
