Edited by: Benji Kamara on 17/07/2009 20:10:22 Thank you very much! One's death is the other's bread! (Well that sounds better in Dutch but whatever). Your sacrifice means a lot to me and your ship will find a new home and pilot.
So there I was, probing out a class 5 Sleeper system in my trusty CovOps. I hit the directional scan too as a habit for some quick info. The scan readings say: A Dominix called "Your NEW DOMI :-)". I pop out combat probes and before long I arrive 20km from the abandoned Dominix. Was it really abandoned I wondered? Or was there a cloaked ambush just waiting to happen? After some additional scanning and telling myself this was actually what it seemed to be, I called in a corp mate who can actually fly a Dominix :P. In his pod, he warped in close to the ship and quickly boarded it.
But then!.... No ambush...no enemies whatsoever. I realised the sad truth about the hardships the former pilot of this vessel must have had to endure: Getting stuck in a Sleeper system, no probe launcher, no way out, doomed. And instead of blowing up his ship he decided to tidy it up, rename it and abandoned ship. He must have watched it get smaller while his pod drifted away into the darkness, meanwhile listening to the beeps of the self destruct mechanism...
We quickly made our way out of the system, and my corp mate informed me about a tech2/meta4 fitting, faction ammo, 2 trimark pumps and an anti explosive rig. I loved every second of my adventure. Thank you, unknown pilot! |

This one time, at band camp... No, wrong story.
I was poking around in a Class 2 system a couple months back, and I scanned down a DG medium tower. Since I have yet to meet the POS that can see through a covops cloak, I warp to it, and it's offline. And the mods and guns around it aren't anchored. And there are three unanchored GSCs sitting there.
Long story short, the GSCs were full of a bunch of T2, Meta 4, and faction gear. That plus the POS mods retailed for around 350m, and I ransomed the tower back to the CEO for 50m. (The corp had 'lost' the tower somehow.)

Before the scanning changes that made signal identification easy, my friend and I got trapped in a terrible class 1 wh (we didnt know what we were doing at the time, didnt realize how small class 1s are) when my third friend collapsed the wh on his way out. After failed probing for an exit and waiting a day or two for dt to shift the signals unsuccessfully, we safespotted our ships (nomen and an augoror), renamed them "Here Lies x", renamed our secured GSC we had been using for ammo to "Here lies x and x, two brave explorers", ejected, and self destructed our pods.
A week or two later I got a convo from a mercenary corp who apparantly found my abandoned nomen and wanted to know how I lost it. He was nice enough to give my friend back his ship for nostalgia, but my nomen was lost. Well. Welcome to EVE. "I long for death, not because I seek peace, but because I seek the war eternal" |

This one time, when I was in a class 5 sleeper system, I was happily flying my dominix around blasting sleeper rats here and there.
When the time came for me to return to civilised space I clicked my probe launcher, but alas!... I had no scan probes left! I panicked... there was no way out for me and my poor domi! I cried for help in local, but no one would hear me.
After hours of flying in a straight line I gave up. I activated the self destruct sequence... As I sat in my Domi, I remembered the good times we had together, like the time we slaughtered a whole compound of Sansha Slavers and rescued the Damsel! And the time I fitted it for PVP and neuted the **** out of someone.
I couldn't let it go down like this, my Domi deserved more! It was then, 5 seconds before the timer ran out that I got a brilliant idea!
If I couldn't get it out.. then maybe, just maybe someone else will stumble upon my domi and get it out! Then, they'll write a C&P thread about it making it possible for me to contact them and be reunited with my baby!!!
I renamed it "Your NEW DOMI :-)" before ejecting, leaving it in the cruel hands of Fate. As the timer ticked down for my imminent death, I wondered, "Will I ever see my baby again?"

Not long after Apocrypha came out, I came across a lonely Atron left at planet 1 in some w-space system. I decided to eject and get in, just to see how it was fitted: nothing special, just some T1 tackle, no probe launcher. So I ejected again, got back in my ship, and went on my merry way.
A week or so later I get an eve-mail from the insurance company about a small payout, and a killmail in my losses. "Atron? When did I lose an Atron? Huh?" Slowly it dawned on my that by boarding the ship I had made it mine, and when the next visitor decided to test his missiles on it...
Those insurance companies are terrifyingly omniscient if they have records of a ship I once boarded for all of a minute in unknown space, and its subsequent destruction.

Sometimes I gear up a frig with core scanner and 4 probes and label it "Your escape ship" and leave it in WH space.
Why be such a nice guy in a game where people go out of their way to be *******s?
Because I am an ******* in RL and play this game to get away from that.

Imagine the torture in finding a scanning ship in a system that you are trapped in just to realise it is the only race frigate you can't fly !

Weak. Abandoned ships adrift is one of the coolest wh-features, always leave something behind if you take the quick route back to k-space. That's much more valuable then a little insurance money .

was a thing I read, somewhere.
If you create a bookmark, you can enter a lot of info in the description, and leave it in the hold of a ship you're abandoning.
Like "Captains log: We've been trapped here for days. No way out. The sleepers are everywhere. I can hear them. Whispering. Scheming. I'm going crazy, I know it."
gives anyone who finds it an interesting story to read and tell others.
A bit spooky too.

Damn.
All I have ever found is an afk transport sitting outside a pos shield that I couldn't destroy alone on one fly-by before being pos targeted (but I did manage to do some 14k damage to the nearby array/structure/battery), or solo anchored towers with nothing else (no shield) around them, or fail fit newbies and fail fits on possible alts / friends of a certain corp.

i only can confirm commander kay must be lying because the original story (no probe launcher) didnt fit his explanation (probe launcher, no scanprobes) :P no clue about the second one, but of course its mine ^^

I had been roaming w-space in my Nemesis, after having the good luck to find and pop an afk Pilgrim with it a day or 2 previous. At the time, I was living in J123458, a.k.a. Jade (a class 4), and it never linked directly to empire, so scanning was always happening.
Anyway, in this new system, I scanned a Dominix, Megathron, and Blackbird. I got an alliance mate in with his Anathema, and he quickly got a lock on the Domi and Mega. I show up, cloak and approach, when I realize that they are abandoned. They are just parked side by side, dead in space. Alliance mates actually don't have a Gallente BS pilot, so they come in and stand guard as I come and fetch them both. Completely t2 fit, faction ammo, no probe launchers.
As I get the Mega back to the corp POS, the Anathema gets a lock on the Blackbird. It too is just sitting in space, so they took that one for themselves. I've also picked up an abandoned Probe, come across cans sitting anchored at planets with cap boosters, and other interesting goodness. Abandoned things in w-space really add to the cool mystery vibe you sometimes get out there.

Over an hour ago, I entered a wh to see some sleeper wrecks, a tower, and a hulk on scan. I did a P&P lookup on the player's name (Hulk name not changed). It was currently an NPC corp character.
I warped around to find the "PoS". I noticed a lack of structures on scan. The hulk was in the direction of the pos so I figured it was inside shields.
I warp to 100, and wind up some 245km away from the pos. It has one gun battery incap'd, no shields, rest are online. I then notice that the Hulk is about 80km from me with NO PILOT!!!
Being able to pilot a Hulk I frantically bm 7500m from it, warp out and dock, come back in my pod, and abscond with the loot:

I cant fly it, but my other char can and was only 2 jumps away.

Someone really could make a lot of money moving their corp into Wormhole salvage.
Head around empire scanning WH's with a cheap assed frigate, move in, combat probe, nothing, move to next WH, rinse and repeat, you WILL find abandoned ships and POS's. At the same time you could offer a ship return facility where you return fitted ships to owners who leave a BM with their name in hold for say 50% of ship value. This way you will get people giving you WH id's to look out for. But at the same time leaving abandons ships for WH goers to happen accross, it WOULD offer a small % chance that owners will get their ship back for half price of new one. Just an idea :D

Easy; just leave a frigate skillbook in the cargo hold. If the person is desperate to leave with their ship, they'll take the day or two to train up the skill.
Also.... how would they find the prober in the first place, unless they're adventurous enough to warp randomly to planets/moons?
Now that is just pure evil.

My very first time in a WH, about two days after apocrypha hit:
Completely borked the aggro in a C3 magnetometric site with myself and two mates all in battlecruisers. As my one friends Myrmidon started to get into structure, my other friend (the FC) gang-warped us all to a planet. Unfortunately, the guy piloting the Myrmidon arrived at the planet in a pod. Fortunately, there just happened to be a gallente shuttle floating at the planet. We had a good long laugh about that as he flew out to pick up a battleship.
In the months since, I've found a handful of abandoned frigates, one abandoned covert ops (with probes in it. i can't figure out what must have happened there) and a bellicose. |

In my 3rd ever wormhole adventure, months and months back, I had enterd with some alliance members, of which we were fitted to take on the sleepers at the combat sites and salvage the aprts to begin some early T3 production, and at the time we didn't know how much of a pain in the a** it would be.
After having to warp uot from nuking the 3rd wave, the planet I warped off to had a mysterious set of Drones abandoned at the planet, some 10km from the at-0 warp point.
I checked the overview thoroughly and did a D-scan. Knowing I couldn't do anything about a possible claoker, at least I'd feel better seeing nothing safespotted 300,000km away. I went to pick up the Hornet I's, and upon scooping a few extra to my drone bay 5 HobGoblin II's appeared about 16km away. I assure you my pants were in need of changing at that point. No ships on D-scan, and knowing cloakers can't be cloaked if thery had jettisoned something next to them within 2.5km, I ran like hell.
I swear, the honestly must be more to WH space than T3 creation. There must be more secrets about ship augmentation or something that we will learn this fall.. |
