I haven't seen a topic for this in QUITE some time so I think it's about time it was brought up again so that the devs know that this is really something that needs addressing.
Come on guys. I figure you're a Windows based company, and the Mac Client is a fairly new release, but it's about time you finally patched in Mac keystrokes.
We're talking about 'Command' key as an action button for things like copying, pasting, closing windows, and every other button you Windows guys use the Ctrl button for. It's about. Time.
So can we get a status update on this fix? Is it being written? Is it on your radar? Is it planned for the future? What's going on. :)

Edited by: Krazaku on 18/07/2009 17:27:06 Here here! Very annoying problem. I use both Macs and PCs regularly. You do have to switch your brain depending on the platform you're on. The game however makes it a really odd experience on the Mac. It's a bit of a Frankenstein between the two. Please map those keys more consistently with the entire Mac operating system.

I use Command for copy/pasting in Eve all the time... and ctrl works as well if I were to try it.
Closing windows however, nope. Don't know of any way to do that with a keystroke in Eve, but I admit, I haven't looked. Mostly because I'd just end up closing the wrong window due to the way the current window focus likes to play games with me.

this is the problem right here. CCP write the game to run under windows the only reason we can also run a Mac client is because CCP give the game code to TransGaming who then put a wrapper around it to make it run under OS X. There's no reason for CCP to add code to the windows version to account for this single mac modifier key. The solution would be for TransGaming to add something to their wrapper that took all Cmd- keystrokes and passes them to the Eve game code as Ctrl- keystrokes. They've already catered for the most important ones: Cut/Copy/Paste and Quit.
But there are far more important issue that they are working on getting right. Once they've got the issues that are affecting gameplay for some people sorted, then if we're lucky they might look at enabling Cmd-w for close window. I agree with Keiko though, if it was there, i wouldn't use it as i'd likely end up closing the wrong window and then swearing very loudly

Yes there is. Go to your System Preferences and open the Keyboard & Mouse. On the Keyboard pane, tab, or what ever it is called there is a check box to use the functions keys like you would in Windows.

On the contrary. If you're going to write a mac game, write a mac game. Don't leave out some of the most basic, fundamental parts of a mac game, being the ability to read the OSX system and adopt the keystrokes that are used by the operating system.
CCP even has those keystrokes (using ctrl) listed in the preferences, but locks them so you're unable to change them. Why?
Your argument is that the game is still functional. You can still operate the game without a mouse but an integral part of the gaming experience is going to be lost trying to navigate it. I don't enjoy having to reteach myself the most fundamental keystrokes every time I launch one of my games. I am far from the only person waiting on this fix I'm sure.
Blizzard has done it. CCP can do it.

In a similar vein, there are other issues related to keyboard processing (which have been around for a long time); I wonder if they are all somehow related.
My favorites:
1. Any alt+<key>, such as shortcuts and whatever, performs that shortcut action as well as placing a character in the chat window. Kind of annoying when you're in combat hitting shortcuts (I've got some set up for drones) and your chat window fills up with special characters that then have to be deleted.
2. Something between EvE/Transgaming code and OSX isn't playing nice. For instance, ctrl+F2 doesn't toggle the bottom-row module in a ship but instead is 'lost'. It doesn't even highlight the Apple menu like it should (unless EvE does not have the focus). Not sure what's going on there, because that one used to work.
3. Somewhere around Empyrean Age keybindings for things like Ventrilo were broken; push-to-talk no longer works if the EvE window has the focus. I suspect this is related to issue #2 above.
I'm fairly certain all three of these issues have bug reports - I know I've submitted two of them. I still wish it were possible to see a list of all outstanding bug reports and their status, but I can understand why this information is not made public. |

Edited by: Leila974 on 29/07/2009 07:11:26 Yeah sometimes it's a pain to use Eve on Mac.
I've noticed another problem using shortcuts with azerty keyboards. When you write words in chan keys are like azerty keyboard. (It's the goal you'll tell me ) But when I use shortcuts... it's like i'm using a qwerty keyboard... even if the letter displays in shortcut settings is the right one correponding to the key I press... (Ctrl+A on keyboard display Q in settings and Q display A...)
I've noticed that when i wanted to select all item in inventory for example, so that I press Ctrl+A like on Windows... and each time it closed the client!!!!
I've understood long time later that it was like i've pressed Ctrl+Q (not A) which is the shortcut to quit game immediatly!!
Now i've setup shortcuts like a Qwerty keyboard even if i'm still using an azerty one correctly in chan but i'ts not cool.
NB : i've noticed that the portage of the windows based client use Wine to do it. But it's really not perfect for features like that and and i dont think it's giving the best fps .

After using the control key for copy paste in eve so much my work is now suffering as I keep getting my key combo's confused! This needs to be changed.
Also, it's hard to find combinations of keys that work in the shortcut keys section of the preferences - lots of things you choose have no effect.

This feature is now available in the current Sisi build. If you're still seeing any issues with, for example, AZERTY keyboards, please let us know.

Edited by: Leila974 on 31/07/2009 11:11:47 Sorry to ask that but i'm not really sure to understand what u means Maladar about "Sisi build". You mean actual client version?
As you can see i'm aware to learn about specific expression used by developpers.
It's specifically "Sisi" which i've never seen. I know the word "build" for software version.

Sisi is short for Singularity, the EVE test server. It currently is running a testing version of EVE Online Apocrypha 1.5, which features the keystroke abilities this thread is about. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |
