I'm talking about doing L1 and early L2 missions... not PvP
It took me a while to figure out what I had been doing wrong fighting with my frigates and destroyer - now I take advantage of the range of railguns and my ship's speed and keep the enemy at range and pick them off.
Once I had that down I moved up to a Cruiser. I began with a Vexor.
First thing I found was the Vexor is slow. I found it was more difficult to keep all the baddies at range, they'd just close in on me. I thought about the idea of changing from railguns to blasters, then decided to abandon guns altogether and fit 3 salvagers and two tractor beams, and let 5 hammerhead drones do all the fighting while I salvage behind them. That's pretty efficient from a isk-making perspective and gave me a grin for a mission or two, but now its not very satisfying from a firepower perspective.
I'm going to buy a Thorax soon and would like to know in general what the best tactics and general fitting are. I don't need specific fittings, just whether blasters are better (like the ship description says) or should I stick with railguns?
Should I continue trying to keep them at range or just sit there and let them close and blast them?
Or is letting the drones do the work the most efficient way to kill PvE?

Use the AB to get/keep distance. If you're not getting attacked, don't shoot anything until you're at range, only then open fire. Then try to keep the range. Ideally you'll aggro one group and pick 'm off as they approach you. Once they're dead, you can move on to the next group and pick those off as they approach.

Just keep uping those drone skills imo.
get Scout Drones V and fill your bay up with T2 mediums.
also, toss one of those drone link augmenters or whatever they are called into the high slots.
On my gallente alt, who has about 1.5m SP, and only t1 drones (2 more days to T2) I can hardly keep up with the targeting of the rats as my drones are insta popping everything frigate size.

My preferrence was biggest rails possible and an active tank (medium armour rep)on a thorax for l2's (and a full set of mediums with fairly good skills). Just fly away in a straight line, watch your capacitor and you're there.
I would advise against wasting time salvaging l1 and l2's if you can manage it, isk-wise. Get through the missions faster and rack up the standings to get you on l3/4's. Then the money rolls in and you can salvage to your heart's content. Gring, grind, grind.
For the vexor, small blasters worked surprisingly well for me leaving a lot of capacity for a solid tank. Drone link augmentor is nice here, the extra range compensates for the speed problem you mention.
Good luck.
