Edited by: Lt Forge on 21/07/2009 21:17:20 Well it's easy:
Beams: Good for short-medium(-long).
Pulses: Good for short.
If you tend to stay at range, pick the Beams, for short range pick the Pulses.
Edit: Found this.

I always use beams for PvE because I am too lazy to run down the rats to get them into pulse range. -------- Ideas for: Mining

If you have t2 pulses use scorch and have an afterburner. If you don't use beams. Pew Pew Lazorz!!! |

On my Paladin I tried both. Eventually settled with Pulses. With scortch ammo you can hit almost everything. There are a few missions that youll have to chase a bs or two but not many. So use an afterburner, which youll want for salvage anyway.

I'd use beams on a harbinger. Doesn't hurt to try out pulses, though.

PVE a bit with pulses... then after a bit, you'll realize that you spend most of your time using scorch except versus just a couple of races.
Once you've done that, get hit with the shocking realization that Beams outdamage Pulse at scorch range.
End up using Beam for most except for vs a couple of missions.

If you have t2 guns use pulse, if not then use beams. That simple really. -----------------------------------------------------

Show me a beam setup that outdamages a pulse setup at Scorch range.

Edited by: Subject River on 22/07/2009 06:25:38 Heavy Beam Laser II: 6s RoF 3.6x 24km Heavy Pulse Laser II: 5.25s RoF 3.6x 12km
Scorch M: 22 Dmg @ +50% (12 + 6 = 18) AN XRay M: 23 Dmg @ -25% (24 - 6 = 18)
14% better RoF vs 4,5% better Volley. Scorch wins at this range. yet, as soon as you get above 18km beams are far superior (so go beam)

That just proves my point. Scorch outdamages Beams once you take the rate of fire into account, which you seemingly neglected. Edit: Ninja edit'd.
Let's not also forget that a pulse setup is much more easy on fitting than beams, resulting in less fitting mods and more damage mods.

well, it is entirely possible to fit a harb with heavy beams without having to use any pds/rcu so fitting is kinda out of the scope :)
there are 2 points for beams: a) longer range on demand b) more thermal damage. as soon as you dont fight blood/sansha scorch gets rather behind compared to AN Xray.

Edited by: Taradis on 22/07/2009 09:24:59 I perfer Tech 2 tachyon beams nuff said. I despise pulses for pve unless it's against angels. Now Tech 2 tachyons on paladin makes mission running a lil too easy
Edit: Pulses on harb using scorch is awesome decent dps all round. If your gonna use beams use amarr navy mf, xray's. Use Aurora if rats are at a longer range

Problem with Scorch is that it does 80% EM damage and any rats other than sansha/blood are more or much more resistant to that. So using beams with multifrequency crystals will in the end yield better results, especially against guristas that are highly resistant to EM but have a slight vulnerability to thermal. -------- Ideas for: Mining

With rats that aren't vulnerable to laser damage you want RoF. Pew Pew Lazorz!!! |

sure - lets prentend your fighting angels. Worst case, right?
Not really. Switch to Multifrquency (cus they are under 20km anyway..) Laugh as you STILL do ****loads of dps, and megabeams (hell, dual light beams) cant track them.
