Edited by: Will Strafe on 22/07/2009 05:00:32 Edited by: Will Strafe on 22/07/2009 04:57:33 I've been missioning for a while in Level 4's with a Rokh. I've always passive tanked it since it holds it's own and you don't need to micromanage everything. Saves cap too.
Now I've been thinking stepping into a Nightmare to get a ship that can eat through these missions, and I have had a look at it. Firstly it got one more medium slot than the Rokh, then again it doesn't get the shield resist bonus of the Rokh, so if I end up using another active hardener that evens out. The Nightmare will end up with a better passive tank than my Rokh though all in all.
But everyone and their corp mate say to active tank missions. Why is that exactly? My passive tank works fine, and it can seem to me that stepping into a cap hungry Amarr BS a passive tank would shine even more.
So please enlighten someone who skipped class, why should I make an active tank on a Nightmare?
Edit: Just realised this should probably have been in ships and modules reading it over. But it's about active/passive tanking in missions, so maybe someone here can answer me anyway.

The NH with good pasive tank = crapy dps , like 250 dps. with active shield tank you will have the low slots to fit BCS and get some more dps

understanding Ops post FAIL, where is a nighthawk mentioned? What nightmare setup only gets 250 dps i think it beats that with one gun lol.
Nightmare must be active tanked or your resists are too low, you want 2 of each type hardener tech 2 minimum and 1 faction invul on there, couple of cap rechargers and a boost amp then a nice deadspace xl booster.

forgive me if this sounds odd, but is it not counter intuitive to spend billions on faction ship modules to make a ship able to tank in missions? I must admit i've never been a fan of a missioning rokh, from using a CNR the dps drop into a rokh was near unbearable. It's a shame i had hoped the rokh would work like a big drake but that big signature radius doesnt help against battleships.
Mind you, got a new missioning tengu, and thats quite a bit of fun ^.^

Okay, thx for the answers. I am indeed dead tired of the Rokh dps, even fitting 3 Mag Stabs II. I manage to squeeze that in and still have a passive tank that holds in level 4 missions. But I'm thinking I haven't tried active tanking and thus don't know what I'm missing.
I'm really stuck in my decision making here, I either need to grind out a billion for the Nightmare and then I don't know how much for the fit. Or start training Cruise Missiles but with absolutely no missiles skills whatsoever, and buy a Navy raven here and now, lacking all missile skills atm.
My Wallet is at 350 million. I'm in tears having to grind out about 1.5 billion in a mission Rokh...
What would be quicker you think? I cant stand to do more than 1 max 2 missions a day.
Guess the Navy Raven looks good, and skills train themselves thank God.

Sure you can buy a Nightmare or Marauder and passive it. But when you spend nearly a billion on a ship you might as well squeeze every last thing out of it.
For simply doing missions a CNR or Raven would be best since its a solid mission runner and you can easily put a simple tank on and get max Missile points and 3x BCU and you are done. Also ensure to fit a target painter to help kill BC and scratch cruisers. You'll have to rely on drones for frigates and harder cruisers. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

How's your armour tanking? instead of training up missiles you could train up sentries & crosstrain Gallente, given you've already got rail skills, I'm assuming you've already got drone support skills.
Passive tanking tends to come at the cost of cap regen, so it's not always saving cap, and it does take up an awful lot of slots.

Active tank frees up your lowslots for damage mods = faster missions.
I use 4 x heat sink and cap booster myself, nothing can touch the Nightmare. Also, get a Pith booster instead of Gist, it's a better "o-****" button.

Maybe you should find something else to do with your ingame time then.

Getting related Raven missile skills trained to 4 is roughly 25-30days if you start from scratch. Assuming you get a conservative 20-25mil/day on average running 1-2 missions a day, that puts you between 500-750mil.
Just get a CNR and use any extra cash for a set of CN launchers. It's a very versatile and efficient ship for missioning. You'll thank yourself later for not jumping ahead and getting the Nightmare first.
My own Nightmare's collecting dust right now due to lack of use. Turreted (non-marauder) ships are fun, but they create dispersed wrecks which is no fun . Time consuming pain in the ass when you do salvage. You can control the dispersal pattern somewhat, but you'll never beat a genuine missile ship when it comes to balling up the wrecks

or do like me and use salvage alt. or even say to hell with the wrecks and just go for the standings. |

on ships like the nighthawk the passive tank works pretty well due to increased resists, and the recharge/shield amount ratio, and how large extenders boost this rather nicely.
on the nightmare it well, works but it just uses so many slots it is not as effective as an active tank. you want to fit as many heatsinks/tracking enhancers and tracking computers as you can. |

if you have to say o-**** with a gist booster you are doing it seriously wrong. |
