Played in beta ages ago, just signed up to retail a few days ago....been busy! ;)
Started as a Minmatar, been running around doing some agent missions, a bit of mining and some pirate killing. Using a Probe, but I just bought a Rifter I'll be able to use in...oh...3 hrs 35 mins. :) Anyway I'm only 21k skill points in and just wanted to get some thoughts on my character before I go much further....and certainly before I look at joining any corporations:
10 Intelligence 6 Perception 11 Charisma 6 Willpower 7 Memory
Since creating him I've read that essentially, charisma = next to useless. Whoops. Seemed like a good idea at the uninformed time! Have I essentially gimped my character for life? Or pigeon holed him into one particular profession. I'd really rather not re-roll even though I am only a few days in, but I'm looking at this game long term so if I'm irrepairably messed now.... :-/
Not sure what I want to do profession wise with this game yet, enjoying having a finger in a few pies at the moment. Do you really have to know for sure from the start or is the game flexible enough for you to decide that later on? Anyway, thanks in advance for any and all replies.

yeah train a new char, put all your items and ships onto it. train the learning skills (apart from the charisma one) to 3/4.
when making a new char go for intel/memory/perception mainly. they are your best skills, -------------------------------------------

Training the learning skills will raise them as well as implants. Intel is a little on the low side. --------- Kitten Hearder Evolution made my sig Less Entertaining than your's. |

no, you're not doomed. Intel is indeed a bit low but with training the learning skills and adding some implants it shouldn't be a problem. High perception and willpower will help you with faster learning of gunnery and ship flying skills

Charisma will be much more important in Shiva. I wouldn't even consider changing your character just now.
Also, with the advanced learning skills on the market now, no stat can be considered too low. It might take some time to improve them, but all is not lost.
When I started my character I wanted to be a researcher, so my willpower stat was low. In those days willpower was very important for piloting and gunnery skills. I was told my low willpower would gimp me, but it has not turned out that way at all. Primary attributes for skills have changed in the past, and no doubt will again in the future. So long as you character is quite well rounded you will be more futureproof. ______________________________________________
Never argue with idiots. They will just drag it down to their level, and then beat you through experience. |

Personally I'd go for balanced, with a little less charisma. Int Per Mem and Wil I think in that order have the most skills assigned to them. It used to be that Int and Per were primary for far more skills, but lately CCP seems bent on adding more Mem and Wil skills. And some Cha but it had so few skills to begin with that it'll still be behind for a while, even if they add many.
In any case, currently you kinda have to specialize, so it may make more sense to choose your path (fighter, industrialist) and specialize for that. Or just keep them all balanced to 8 to start with, +9 each from learning skills, and an implant here and there, and you could end up with 20+ across the board.
Besides, you're NOT pigeonholing anything. No one prevents you from learning Memory and Willpower skills, they'll just take slightly longer. And the difference matters less with the current learning skills and implants. Here's why:
10 int, 6 perception means you learn INT skills 60% faster than PER skills. But, after you've added +9 learning skills/implants to both, you'll end up with 19 INT and 15 PER, and you'll learn INT skills only 19% faster than PER skills. The relative difference between 19 and 15 is much smaller than between 10 and 6.
In the end I advise rebuild your character only because you'll forever feel this regret that "it's not perfect" resurface and ruin your gameplay, not because it's "ruined."

Thanks for the replies people :) I decided to re-roll and transfer my items/money across. New character isn't perfect (minor flaws add character! ;) ) either but I'm more comfortable having those extra charisma points spread around elsewhere.
Now to work out what I want to do with myself :) See you all ingame!

I am a Caldari and I don't recall having the chance to select what my stats were going to be... only what school I would belong to... Is this normal for Caldari or have I messed up?

Linkdeadd, it depends on whether you chose one of the Caldari racial archetypes or to create a custom character. Your freedom to choose your attributes and skills is considerably greater by making a custom design.

I just made a Gallente Intaki with the follow atributes
Intelligence 8 Perception 8 Charisma 8 Willpower 6 Memory 9
I just noticed that when i tried to train my frigates take almost twice as long but i started off with the learning skill. Is my low willpower gonna screw me eventually down the road?

Guys, just to make it clear, you can't be "doomed" by your stats. If its your first time playing, and you're undecided as to how you want to play, just get a good balance. This will give you equal training times for all skills. And considering the dynamic nature of the skills system, a "useless" stat today could become next month's "must have" one. A balanced setup will ensure you do well no matter how the rules change.
Later on, when you find your particular style of play, you can tweak your stats via learning skills to help you better define your character.
And while I would recommend getting all the learning skills leveled early, you don't have to do that exclusively. Early on, intelligence 20 or intelligence 10 will still clear a rank 1 skill to level 1 in 10 minutes or so, give or take a few seconds. Its a bigger deal when we're talking about the higher levels and more advanced skills. So before you start leveling any skill to say 4 or so, make sure the associated learning skills are keeping pace. It'd be pretty dull flying around in your starter frigate for a month while you train learning skills exclusively. =)

I agree, I'm training all the basic skills I need to the minimum level. This is because the attributes do not have a huge effect on training times when you are training to level 1/2. Only afterwards will I train the learning skills.
Which PA character are you?

It really depends what you do. I would say the order of importance is this: Intelligence Memory Perception Willpower Charisma
Switch Memory and Perception if you are pvp only. Auction your items for isk, works sort of like ebay. |
