I was wondering if this game was like runescape, where you are attacked immediately after entering the pvp area. Because that was lame.

I'll leave the statement fairly broad, you can be attacked at any time. Others may add on to this for clarification

Edited by: Xindi Kraid on 27/07/2009 05:06:44 EvE IS the PvP area. Anyone can shoot anyone else at any time in any place for any reason. In high sec though such things are discouraged by your friendly neighborhood CONCORD officers who will blow the agressor into little pieces. Exceptions to this rule are if somone steals from you, self defence, and war. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

I suppose i should rephrase my question: Is unsecure space a constant battle to survive the idiots who only care about PvP, or are there friendly areas?

Lowsec and 0.0 have low enough populations that you won't be shot every 5 seconds, but you should still be vigalant. In addition, 0.0 alliances take measures to secure their space, so traveling in friendly space is usually lower risk than lowsec, and gets safer the deeper you get into friendly territory.
There is a caveat to this though, some systems are chokepoints and will be camped often and heavily. 0.0 is fairly safe, unfortunatly getting past the gatecamps at the border takes some finesse and proper timing (or a fleet large enough to smash the gate camp)
Also for somone to kill you they have to find you first, that means either camping the gates and stations, or probing you down which takes several minutes.
tl;dr you can be attacked at any time, but if you fly smart you won't be attackeed all to often. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

You never just went along the safe side of the border looking for a way through?
But in eve, the person who attacked you will be destroyed if the security rating is 0.5 or above

Some areas are also worse than others. For instance, Caldari low security space is riddled with pirates in the more common areas around Lonetrek. Faction Warfare low sec is more populated than other low sec.
Southern Domain is carebear heaven due to CVA "keeping the peace" around there. But it DOES have pirates too.
Then there's other kinds of low sec...like...backwater Amarr low sec. If you see anyone there, it's probably a glitch in local :P ----- Why doesn't anyone ever read the forums before posting? EVE is a game of adaptation and planning. Adapt or die. |

Just a heads-up - the majority of the playerbase are "the idiots who only care about PvP", as EVE is at heart a PvP game. You should be aware that if someone can blow you up without repercussions, he almost certainly will - and that this is the nature of EVE, and the way that most people like it.
You should also be aware that in lowsec it's almost impossible to be caught in a small ship, so long as you're aware of what's going on around you and take elementary precautions. In 0.0, bubbles change this a little, since you can be stopped from warping without someone needing to target you; but you can still burn back to the gate quite easily, or with adequate intelligence just not jump into the camp in the first place.
Overall the balance between predator and prey is pretty good (in fact it's stacked quite heavily in the prey's interest, but thankfully the balance of stupidity/obliviousness between the two sides balances this out). Unless you expect to be able to fly big heavy ships through lowsec unharassed, you shouldn't have too many problems.
Check out Kessiaan's Lowsec Survival Guide for Rookies to get a more complete idea of the balance of mechanics regarding staying safe in lowsec.

Unlike many games if you get killed its normally your fault or you were very unlucky. This game has many ways to avoid combat and some of the fun is working that out.
If your stupid you will die a lot in .4 or below and hate the game, but that's intended.

I'll make it simple.
Look at local, anyone without a blue square with a + in it is out to kill you. Everywhere.

And remember - jihadswarm might very well kill you in highsec. The only way to ensure you won't get shot at is to be in a station!
And yeah, PvP is the core of this game. You always have to be vigilant. There are ways of surviving though.

I wouldn't exactly call CVA "carebear heaven". Thanks to us being NRDS policy, and attracting neutrals/newbies, pirates LOVE to come through our territory and our enemies LOVE to start fights, gate camps, and even lately attempting to stick POS in our area.
Honestly CVA space has more pvp in it everyday than most of 0.0, because pirates/pvpers LOVE a place jampacked full of people they can attempt to fight with.

i live out in 0.0 space and we effectively control it. while hostiles occasionally come in, i can just dock up or warp to my pos if they do come in my backend system.
really, 0.0 space is as safe as empire if you know what to do

You can be shot at anywhere, at any time, except for when you are docked at a station.
The only difference is that in high sec, the person needs kill rights or a war dec to shoot you without concord popping their ass. And just because concord will pop their ass doean't mean they can't pop yours first.
