Just thought i'd give a quick heads-up to all the lovely residents of OoPE about my latest project!
Some of you may remember the thread I made about my pushbike, the one that i'd fixed an engine to, well I have decided that a 48cc two stroke engine on a pushbike is all well and good but wouldn't it be more fun with something...a little different?
To that end I am currently building a Pulse Jet.
I expect it to output about 60 pounds of thrust when it is finished and about a hundred million decibels of awesome.
Expect pictures and/or obituary soon.

Edited by: Benco97 on 28/07/2009 10:47:51 Obviously there are a number of problems inherent with attaching a jet engine to a push-bike, most notably among these are the noise and the heat. I'm obviously going to have to offset the pulsejet from the frame by some distance in order to avoid melting my wheels (And my leg) but that isn't really going to help with the noise.. So far my only idea with regards to that has been "Don't use the engine ANYWHERE NEAR houses and wear earplugs at all times". What do you think?
Fuel economy will also plummet but as I'll be using the engine less (With the current setup it is very tempting to use the engine when I don't have to, with this new setup I won't be able to for fear of a police chase ) that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm also going to have to upgrade the brakes on my old bike, if anyone has any suggestions in that area I would be MOST welcoming of them, these little old fibre pads aren't really good enough for the current setup, throw a jet engine in the mix and I don't think they're going to work
Right now I'm still collecting up all the needed parts (Less than you'd imagine actually, it's a very simple device) and this combined with the poor weather recently means that I haven't been able to start it yet but pictures will be forthcoming when I get the chance.
On a related note I have also had an idea of how I could quickly convert my bike for travel along rivers, it's a kind of hybrid coracle that you simply snap on to the underside of the bike. With the pulsejet engine providing thrust directly instead of just boosting the wheels then this boatbike idea would be MUCH simplified
Edit- I have just through of a very nice EVE analogy: I'm taking off the AB and putting on a MWD

Sounds (no pun intended) about right, like you said the jet noise will definitely give you a pretty hideous sig radius
Looking forward to more info on this. Just, you know, don't kill yourself in the process. Godspeed.

Pulse jet, haha nice, hang on though which gets more thrust? Pulse jet or a jet turbine?? Though when i was building a rocket, looking a rocket motors, (model rockets btw, was a project) O motors, cost ú700 ish and you need a license that could allow you to carry about 5+kg of explosives, but gave a total impulse of 13,000Ns.. something like 7kg of propellent.. ---------------------------

My decision to go with a valveless pulsejet wasn't anything to do with power ratios or things like that, it's the sheer simplicity of the valveless design that swayed me, having to replace valves every 40 mins doesn't appeal to me.
Power wise, if my first one isn't powerful enough then I'll make it BIGGER until it IS powerful enough, or, put two on it, one on each side. It's not like these things are hard to make, it's just a bent pipe and a sparkplug
Also with regards to legality, while I may have found a loophole with the two-stroke engine I'm pretty sure that no such loophole exists for a jet engine and as such this is all perfectly legal...until I get stopped

Simple. If you need to stop that thing, just jump off and hope you land on something soft. >_>
I'm not sure if your bike will hand that sort of braking well, though.

Schematics and link to the legality please?
I wanna build one!
Also, if you got enough power and built some wings, could you make it into a glider-bike, ie get up to speed and drive off a drop-off and glide for a bit? Red bull do competitions on this so this might work if you could fix the wings to it...
And to finish, thank you for reading my sig -------------------------------------------------- If you are still reading i would probably hav posted by now |

Schematics for Valveless pulsejets can be found all over the net, they really are very simple. This is a pretty informative website with many designs and lots of info on the subject, they even have a little tool which can calculate ratios and stuff for you.
The legality of the matter is this: It's not legal. At all. Ride a pulsejet engined push-bike through London and you're going to be in trouble, a lot of trouble. I am counting on the fact that I live in the middle of nowhere to help me out quite a lot in this regard.
As for flight...well... I'll not lie, I have considered it but I am not THAT crazy yet. Staying on the ground is EASY compared to staying in the air where you would have to worry about balance and such. Also heights scare me

For the flight thing, the competitions red bull run/have ran were to achieve the greatest distance gliding/powered flying off a bridge and into a river. No sore crunchy landing :)
Also, how would i go about powering a spark plug, google doesn't turn much up. Obviously i know i can't go connecting it to AA batteries, but would i need to use an inverter at a certain frequency and voltage? And to finish, thank you for reading my sig -------------------------------------------------- If you are still reading i would probably hav posted by now |

You could definitely use a transformer and an ignition coil but what I'm going to do is a little different, I don't want to rely on battery power so I'm going to see about using a large piezoelectric sparker, an elegant solution if I do say so myself.

This is a good example of a large home-made pulsejet

Yes, I will see in the news very soon.
There's a reason they have that thing welded to the ground. I'm going to ask you not to do this. If you do, and get on the news, I will post it on these forums.

Your concern is touching but I can assure you that I will be fine, safety is always a big worry of mine so I'll have my goggles on at all times!
Seriously though, I will be extra special careful, this is all in the name of fun.

If you're putting it on a bike, you could put a heat-shield around it to get rid of some of the heat.
