I decided to try basic mining drone and it was incrediple slow compared to 2 mining lasers i had in my frigate.

None atm, I consider Drones a waste of time. In many sitations your best off using the drones for defence and mounting more lasers.
Of course when mining in high sec space, anything is better then nothing. Basic Drones are your best bet until after Shiva. You can get Harvesters but they may not be worth the funds at this point in the game for a new player.

Yes... Harvesters only mine 3x as much as basics for about 500x the price...

While mining in "secure" areas, the mining drones are helpfull, although they dont speed up considerably the speed of mining, they help a little, thus they are cheap and dont cost energy. Of course, the mining drones help more in a thorax, a vexor, a dominix and other ships with high drone bay where you can carry two full squadrons of drones, one for mining and the other for defending.
And about drones, keeping some in the drone bay can help you in tight situations against npcs, where u need healing and firepower
