Edited by: Labratory Rat on 27/07/2009 20:15:14 After placing a buy order, I noticed that another participant posted a +0.01 surprisingly fast over and over again. Since I had some time on my hands, I decided to time it and watch. Every 5 minutes my competitor posted a +0.01 whenever I bid. Sure I have no fact beyond observation of repetitive actions but over the course of an hour this occurred spot on. It could be someone with ALOT of free time or it could be a macro.
Wondering if anyone has seen this before?

Actually, there are market bots. Unfortunately, they're harder to report than macro miners. There was a thread a little bit ago about someone who had linked a bunch of them together.

I know I've done that myself--counting down the final seconds to modify an order. It's time consuming, but people do it.

The "John Doe" is a myth that many people think up to explain things beyond their own addiction to eve.
Not to say there aren't a few "John Doe's" in eve, but I think many many people are a bit too quick to jump to this "excuse".

If you have the patience to count down the seconds and modify your order the second 5m is up...then there are 20 others like you doing the same thing.
When I was selling a ton of CCC's, I had the market open and as soon as someone undercut me, I undercut them. To those sellers I probably appeared like a bot, but infact I just really really wanted rid of the damn things and was willing to put in the time.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

And what you can do is create a new, separate market order the second you see the person (or bot) up their price by 0.01. At least you've have five minutes to yourself, unless the person/bot takes the same approach.

honestly?
I keep a comp up with the game at work. I can't play much or pay attention to it enough to do anything other than market.
What I have is a small alarm that goes off at regular intervals, and I do a quick check of the current status of orders. Then I go back to work.
Bet that looks a lot like a market bot. I bet I'm not the only one doing that.

History of a Market Bot
I was glad I made this because they were banned right after.

I've been noticing that too. I found out that the only way to beat them is to go about 20 ISK higher than his last order price.

It's just station trader. That's what they do. For example in Jita, you can focus on single item, trade that. If you can buy that item with 600k and sell with 800k, you just need to keep your orders at the top.
I actually started trading 5 items in Jita by doing this, did quite nice sum of ISK back then.

I think a lot of us Jita traders have bot like behavior. Honestly I've found the more I can emulate the market bots the more successful I am. This works because so many people are demoralized by bot behavior that they get out of my little corner of Jita pretty quick.
The two things I try to do are focus on a few items at a time like the previous poster, and since I go to work right after downtime I make sure to log-in right when the server comes up and stay logged in all day (as close to 23/7 as I can). If someone adds me to their buddy list they will think I'm definitely a bot.
I wonder how many times I've been petitioned.

Bots may not; they require some built-in protection against reacting to 'large' price changes, otherwise they'd be readily gameable.
