I have a bit of a problem.
I had a decent (0.5) SEC status when some guy came along and either flipped my can or looted one of my wrecks. I was going to let it go as I was hauling stuff back and forth from the station and he'd probably be gone by the time I grabbed a ship with guns to deal with his thrasher.
As it turns out, he wasn't in any mood to run, so I ended up getting my Rupture out and came back. When he still didn't run, I felt a momentary doubt as I'd been here before and nearly lost a cruiser when the trap was sprung. Nonetheless, I scrammed him and opened up with the best my T1 guns could provide. My heart was beating pretty fast when I realized I was actually killing this dude's ship and my rupture was actually ignoring his numerous guns. His destroyer popped.
I felt great, though the "battle", as it turned out was with a pilot even newer than me. I didn't realize it at the time, though. My heart was pounding, I whooped and declared victory as I hit the trigger and watched his pod assplode. YARR!
Then I remembered I was in empire. Whoops.
concord did its thing but I was fully insured and I'd built my rupture so I actually made a little coin from my destruction.
That's when I saw the destruction I had wrought on my security status. Concord had assessed a -30% penalty to my sec status. I'd gone from 0.5 to -2.68.
And that's the problem I have come to beg for advice.
I've headed out to lowsec to kill decent NPC ships but I'm not skilled enough to take on most Battleships. My best warships are cruisers so I don't seem to be able to take down a BS because I simply don't have the DPS to pull it off.
can someone tell me how many smaller ships it will take to get back to a -1.9? I kinda like my the yellow background and skull attached to my name in overview but I'm more of an industrialist based character and access to markets is pretty important.
Can someone point me in the direction of moving my SEC status and how long it will take? I worked half the night to gain .02 to my status. At that rate it'll be weeks or months to be able to move freely.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long-winded post.

Go -10 its worth the experience.
Otherwise just go to low sec or 0.0, kill one battleship, move on to the next system and kill another battleship. Rinse and repeat for as long as it takes.
You should be able to take on low sec npc battleships with a cruiser.

In all honesty, you should be able to kill the BS sized rats with a cruiser. If you feel it's difficult due to the incoming damage, drop down to a rifter. Yea I said it, a rifter.
200mm RTP SAR EANM DC is more than enough tank while you eat through the frigate sized rats accompanying the BS spawns. Bring lots of EMP and Fusion S with you and then start chewing on the BS. It might be a PITA, but just knuckle down and start grinding. Or has been previously stated, go -10.

Man you can kill the 500k BS spawns in a frig easily, just get as close as you can and bleed em to death, wont take too long to get back over -2

Yeah, I say screw it and just go down the path of full blown pirate
Also, it appears you are using minny ships, so I would look for fittings on Battle Clinic for pve or "ratting" setups so you can take those battleships out. I am able to take out two cruiser/battle cruisers and a battleship in a Thorax just by staying under the big guns' tracking.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 27/07/2009 22:33:43 First things first since the rest of the post is pretty long: you don't have to kill any battleships to get the sec back that you need. You only need to get it back to -1.9 in order to access 1.0 systems again, and you can still access 0.9- systems now. Take a swing through whatever low sec is nearby and kill a single cruiser or battlecruiser, move to the next system, and repeat. You can do this with a frigate or cruiser easily, even with a two month old character.
Taking on an NPC battleship in a frigate will be a severe pain for a two month old character, assuming the tank can even be broken. You should keep to the Rupture.
Beating NPC battleships in a cruiser is about three things (that are true in all PvE.) NPCs of a given faction are very predictable and practically uniform in the damage type they put out and the damage type they're weak against. Newer players may not realize the formula for optimal PvE. So: 1. deal the damage they're most susceptible to 2. tank the damage they deal 3. avoid the ones with good tracking
Point three is why Caldari missile ships are such good PvE machines. Range is largely irrelevant to missiles in a PvE scenario so they can sit under their targets traversal or outside of their optimal as it suits them. Autocannon Rupture will be stuck at close range, which means you'll have to figure out which battleships can't track you there. There are generally only two variations of battleships in low sec, the 500 and 650k bounty type (although I've seen 800k in 0.1 systems.) At least with Blood Raiders the 650k spawn is only effective at engaging distant targets, so for that one you just have to sit close and it won't hit you. I don't know how it works for other factions though, since I used BRs when I was getting my sec back up. Consult Grismar's NPC guide to find out what damage the local rats do and what damage they're weak against (usually it's the same thing.) Load ammo accordingly. http://eve.grismar.net/rats/index.php

Thanks, All. I shouldn't have assumed a BS would be too much for me.
I'm all for trying it in a frigate, though. That sounds like it'd be some fun.
I do intend to do piratey things with my alt. I wish I'd had this fight with that character. I could have smirked at Concord and yelled YARR while I got burned down.
Im off to kill some NPC rats. Thanks again!

Dirk,
Thanks for that info. I was typing a reply and fitting my Rifter as you were posting. I''ll stick to the Rupture, configuring as you suggested for efficiency's sake if nothing else.
Still, the rifter V BS sounds fun. Definitely on the to do list.

Rupture is a good ship to use against BS NPCs. As was just mentioned, train up the Fast Talk skill as well. Joining a 0.0 corp wouldn't be a bad idea either if you want some isk as well. Its just a pain getting down there when you're new to the game.

It's hopeless, you'll never get it back up. just keep it going down... totally worth the experience, carebears will flee when you enter And did you know that this is in fact Surfin's Plunderbunny's forum alt? It's official! |

Thanks all, I can now get safely into Rens. Nice timing, too as I had a couple of named items to sell.
Now that I know what it takes to regain a little SEC fairly quickly, I might indulge myself once in a while. I'm guessing I won't have as much of a hit if I avoid podding someone. can anyone tell me how bit a hit I'd take with just a ship kill?
