Edited by: Arbitoress on 29/07/2009 05:02:17 I'm sure this has been proposed in the past, but seeing as how no changes have been made I thought I'd post a small proposal.
Synopsis: The existing ships in EvE, and their respective color/ plating etc. are beautiful, but based entirely on tier and race. One Megathron is no different in visual appearance to another, aside from different turret choices.
The Proposal: It's simple, and would take virtually no additional user-end or CPP end CPU power. Much like the existing options to choose a corporations logo, allow users who own a corporation to select preset external 'subtle' logo schemes in accordance with the respective Corporation. This would allow for the visual recognition of different corporation ships. These assorted logos would be added to an upcoming update, so no additional stress on the servers would exist.
Not only would external paint schemes diversify the visual euphoria in EvE but also add a level of personalization for users.
To add to the layer of personalization, on top of the Corporation logo layer, users can select from a library of preset paint schemes which would suit the user's character. Instead of cookie-cutter ships, we would now have a true sandbox of ship diversity in the EvE universe.
I can predict now that there might be some apprehension about such an update, so allow me to address the most obvious first (from the perspective of CCP).
Paint schemes might take away from what the EvE universe is attempting to create for users. For example, what if someone chooses an obscene paint logo, or something distasteful which would take away from other users in game experience? -The paint and logo schemes would be preset, included with an update. Each one could be tailored to their respective race as not to take away from the existing plot lines.
Please post your questions or any suggestions you might have. Support would be fantastic! ----------------------------- Oh HAI |

Slightly less custom, but even easier on the servers and clients would be to add a HUE element to each ship and simply allow pilots to alter the overall hue of their ship. Limit it to 265 colours to minimise bandwidth overhead.

Although the notion of a pink Megathron is somewhat appealing, I was thinking of more along the lines of subtle decals and small logos, rather than entire ship color changes.
Changing the Hue might be a good way to go about it, as suggested.
*Edit* For example, for the Minmatar, Tribal patterns would fit perfectly with the culture. ----------------------------- Oh HAI |

Imo, bad idea. I see absolutly no need to change color of ships and the like, nor add logos that would just detract from the ships overall look. More befitting a fantasy MMO where you can dress you char and such (i.e. WOW).
I suggest: Wait for WIS, then dress the chars when in stations.

WiS is a long way off and far from being finalized. It might never be implemented.
As far as WoW goes, I played the game for 1 day and hated it. Uninstalled immediately. ----------------------------- Oh HAI |

This has actually been proposed in the Assembly Hall on a couple of occasions. I like the idea of either a hue change or predefined colors and preset areas that can be changed (a la the Homeworld ship color schemes).
As for the argument (back up the page some) that it would detract from the overall look of the ships - that's a very subjective argument. Personally, I think having Minmatar ships in tribal patterns would be nice. And while I wouldn't personally like a pink Hello Kitty-esque battleship, someone may. --Vel

I would c@@ buckets if I could get a picture of Stan's Dad from South Park on the side of my Megathron, from the episode where he gets drunk and fights people at his kid's little league games, with his shirt off.
Underneath saying, "WHAT DO YOU WANNA DO".

- I'm not actually being belligerent
- This is a horrible idea that I literally shoot down once a month.
- If you'd like to know why, use eve-search
- This is all negated if I can fly a rogue drone domi; please god give me a rogue drone domi
- But in reality it's still a bad idea to be able to modify ships on the public server so everyone can see the mods, but if you want to modify for yourself for fraps and whatnot I don't technically see an issue with it except for the enormous amount of development time that might go in to such a project (and the extremely high probability that CCP wouldn't get all) custom skins just right and get declared incompetent by a bunch of ****s with nother better to do

maybe they just need to add a "paint/decal" hardpoint to all ships, so that players can use them or not according to their will...
CCP just needs to set a hardpoint location on their ship models just like a turret hardpoint, and instead of a turret model, there will be a 2 dimensional surface with a picture on it.
it isnt that hard to add another hardpoint to a ship i guess there are already npc ships with even 9 hardpoints in the game ------------------------------------------------ cruisers used to be a great power when i started this game :) |

I understand your apprehensions concerning additional lag to users, however all that I am proposing is a simple small decal with the Company logo. It's a simple layer added over a texture on the user-end. All that's sent to the user is the information to display an already pre-existing decal. I'm not referring to full on custom paint designed by users. ----------------------------- Oh HAI |
