Please convo me in game, since you consider spinning ships a waste of time and mining in the mean time as free-ish, I am willing to purchase your otherwise wasted time to mine me minerals at 1 ISK PU. See how good I am? - Auditing and consulting

I'd say that you acquire the mined minerals for "free", but once they're in your hangar or cargo hold, they're no longer "free". They have a value. Therefore if you sell things you make at less than market mineral value, you're basically throwing money away, no matter how you got your minerals.
Some people would consider the time you spent to be the cost of them, and strictly speaking, they'd be right, but considering that this is a game and the goal is to have fun rather than to increase your wallet balance, I'd say do what you enjoy and don't worry about maximum ISK/hour income (unless that sort of thing is fun to you, in which case, go for it).
There are two types of "minerals I mine are free" ideas. One assumes that since all you're spending is time, they're free to acquire. This is arguable, depending on how seriously you take making money in a game about internet spaceships. The other one is that if you make something out of "free" minerals, the manufactured item is also "free" and you can sell it for any price and still make a profit. This is not arguable--it's wrong. Doing that is losing you money. As long as you realize this last point, I say, feel free to consider mining them to be acquiring them for free, as long as you see them as having a value the instant they enter your cargo hold.

In these threads there's always two things that happen to derail the actual conversation: one, someone starts claiming that someone else said "free" means "no value". If someone is willing to pay for it, it has "value". (The OP is so far off on many point that it's not even worth joining the free-for-all.)
The second thing is that most can't seem to distinguish between "value" and "cost". Mined mineral have no "cost", thus a massive increase in profit (ie, cash in wallet) over purchased minerals. However, they DO have value. But something you all need to remember: cost is NOT the same as value. And if you choose to, once again, throw around the "opportunity cost" argument, please learn what it means. Most of you aren't using it correctly in this context.
I could post a crystal-clear argument in favor of mined minerals making you considerably more isk for your wallet than purchased minerals as relates to manufacturing, but a) it's been posted many times before and b) some of you continue to ignore the obvious.
And for those of you posting the "can I have your free minerals?" posts, why even bother posting?

They are free, all you can sell them for is worthless internet spaceship credits.

This statement of yours contradicts your entire argument...and proves that mined minerals are never free.
By mining your own trit, you saved yourself from buying it for your own manufacturing process. So the value of the trit you mined equals the isk you saved from buying it (this is their 'Value'). Alternatively, you could have always sold the trit (this will be their 'opportunity cost'). Which option makes you most profit at any point in time will be up to you to calculate as market prices of both minerals and mods / ships fluctuate.

That is, of course, obvious...because you're counting the profits from mining and the profits from manufacturing and comparing them against the profits from the same manufacturing alone. Since mining is usually guaranteed profitable (except possibly in an opportunity cost sense), it seems a singularly pointless statement.

Your missing whats being said in this thread 2!
Though u cant exchange isk for money u can exchange it for a PLEX. This PLEX will save u having to pay for a month subscription there fore isk has a real dollar value!
u make the same mistake as people in here Minerals have no value unless I sell them. Isk has no value as I cant exchange it for money. |

Minerals are worthless, however if you build modules and sell them less than what you could have got for the minerals, then it's a waste of time.
Check out the spreadsheet in the signature (leads to thread) to see where you're going wrong.
