My banner was just removed because it was 1.39kb over size.. common man thats nothing
why is the limit so small in the first place?
I request it be raised to 20kb atleast, No banner deserves that much compression....

Quick answer = dialup.
Try opening a post while on dialup when 14 banners need to load.
Your Mega Afocal Pulse Maser I perfectly strikes Asteroid (Veldspar) [R0ME], wrecking for 798.3 damage.
Your 425mm Railgun I perfectly strikes Guardian Captain, wrecking for 685.9 damage.

Cause in a dicussion a long, long time ago it was decided that 15kb was the best size. If you wish to discuss what would be best when it comes to sig size rules, then go ahead, I'll be watching.
Just remember that there are people with 56k still, and they have to read the forums as well.

If you could make it possible to disable all useless sigs it would be even better.
Atleast restrict it to either a small pic OR 2-3 lines of text, some of the sigs with both pic and text are just silly attention seeking screen hoggers.

i could live with a slightly higher filesize, 20kb sounds OK. more important for me is the actual screensize of the signature...including text.
all those one-liners with attached half screen of signature tend to clutter up a thread
no police, no summons, no courts of law; no proper procedure, no rules of war; no mitigating circumstance; no lawyers fees, no second chance! |

Wrangler,
It would be nice if there was an option in the Forum Settings for signatures to be turned off. This would allow a bit of an increase in allowable file sizes for signatures as thse on slower connections can turn them off anyway.

20kb shouldn't make a huge difference in download times, I think the biggest problem with forum sig rules is the 30kb max area limit which hardly anyone understands.
For those that have no-idea what I am talking about - your sig can be a maximum of 400pixels wide or 120pixels tall - not both at the same time. To figure out the total area, just multiply width and height - if it's more than 30k, good chance your sig will get whacked. ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" It'd be nice if the mod squad spent a little more time dealing with trolls and a little less time with the micrometer.

I have no idea why this rule exists. I could create a black rectangle that was 400x120 that wouldn't stretch the forums beyond what anyone else was allowed, and would be about 1k as a JPG.
Sigs should only be limited in width to prevent forum stretching, and file size to prevent bandwidth whoring. The height restriction is kinda dumb, as people put 30 lines of text in the sigs and make a one line post a page long anyway.

Just a thought but for folk on dialup if you use Firefox you have the option to load images from the originating site only, that will remove only the sigs and probably speed your loading times.

If they decide on a file size they have to stick to it, otherwise somone will moan "but so and so's image is over the limit but you didn't do something bout his" or you'll get accusations of favouritism as different mods would undoubtly be more relaxed about it than others. Way easier for the mods just to stick to a fixed limit, and no matter what size they made it there would be people complaining one way or the other.
