0.0 Ratting in Friendly space.
use a battleship or HAC
IMO a shield tank with reinforced bulkheads and as many drone controll units as you can fit would be good

If I were your alliance/corp leader I would kick you for using a carrier to rat. Hope that helps.

It doesn't especially itld be a carrier I spent my hard earned isk on and I am my corp leader.
And carrier rating point would be for the fun of actively using the carrier in a non risky enviroment when not needed for logistics. Smert ili Slava! |

park carrier 1mm outside station docking ring/1mm outside pos shield. assign fighters to alt. rat with alt while keeping constant check on carrier, local etc. Recall fighters/dock right away if needed.
You might survive.

carrier ratting: get right outside a pos shields, assign fighters to alt, send alt to belt, let fighters kill, watch local. hostile jumps into local you call back fighters and get in pos shield

as everyone else has pointed out, carrier ratting doesnt involve your carrier in a belt.
In addition to being stupidly dangerous, the align time and slow lock speed of a carrier mean that you're never going to perform as well as a well set up ratting BS or hac.
Park the carrier somewhere safer, assign fighters to an alt, and let the alt do the killing. You're going to need a different weapon type to be able to hit the frigates anyway because fighters dont do a good job at that. ___________

Honestly, dont do this. Not only will you lose your carrier very quick, you will also look incredibly stupid. People will make fun of you and your corp for a long time.
Even if you dont lose the carrier by some miraculous circumstances, people will think you are incredibly stupid.
Also fighters cost a lot of isk, sometimes sh*t happens and you lose one or a few to rats, which is a pita.

0.0 Fleet Ops
If the entity commanding the Op doesnt request specific fittings, you could go with something like this. Not really a pro fit, but not terrible either:
[Thanatos, combat non-triage] Damage Control II Amarr Navy Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane (about 30mill a piece and well worth it) Amarr Navy Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane Armor Explosive Hardener II / Capacitor Power Relay II (cap stability vs resistance) Capacitor Power Relay II Capital Armor Repairer I
Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Sensor Booster II (scan res script) ECCM - Magnetometric II
Capital Remote Armor Repair System I Capital Remote Armor Repair System I Amarr Navy Large EMP Smartbomb (not sure what they run for, might as well use a t2) Heavy Unstable Power Fluctuator I Heavy Unstable Power Fluctuator I
Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I Semiconductor Memory Cell I
+ Fighters and a wide selection of regular drones

Logistics
Cargo expanders if its hauling, not much to it really.
Capital (shield) reps if its about repairing a POS that got RFed.

I'm no expert on Carriers, but from what I can tell the one rule I've seen used is "Always have a smartbomb fitted". This is needed to kill off tacklers (when not in triage mode), drones and enemy fighters.

Ratting in a Thanatos is completely pointless.
a Raven or a Dominix will actually do it faster overall and costs 10x as less. --

Check your alliance fittings for idea's. If you're not part of an alliance, than you really should have a talk with your corpmates to have a cohesive idea of what you'll be doing.
And, usefullness > survivability
If you + your support fleet can't survive, than you won't, irregardless of what silly big tank you put on the sucker.
Don't be an idiot, ratting in a carrier gets you killed by aholes like me. ----------------- Friends Forever |

The loss is somewhat embarrassing but minor.
The big issue is what happens when he gets ganked. He'll yell and shout for help and get a *ton* of alliance mates killed. Then the drama and rage. Then he'll feel that they were obligated to save him. But since he wasn't saved he's not obligated to reimburse them for their losses (which might very well exceed the cost of the carrier).

This is pure lollage
1. don't use a carrier to rat, omg it's so lame that is disgusting, really 2. you asked for a fleet op/logistic setup but you said that survivability is more important than usefulness (and you said "of course" aswell) well.... don't fly a carrier, you are not ready, and you'll get mad when it'll pop.

weeelll....tbh id go with whut all these kind folk are saying about parking it at a POS...I myself have a thanatos, and a couple alts. Im not sure what your situation is, but in general I park my carrier orbiting a POS just barely out of the bubble. I assign fighters to an alt. As far as fighter alt ships...I usually use a hyena. It can nano, is fast, and has a bonus to target painting and webbing. if a hostile comes into local, I can continue ratting without fear as worst case i lost a cheap EAF. You can even score a few cheap kills this way. Anyhoo, if they find ur POS w/carrier, just approach the tower, fighters autoreturn, and it takes u all of 5 seconds to get in shields since ur orbiting, and already up to speed. Hyena webbing or target painting cruisers, and frigs makes fighters instapop stuff :) Id assume rapiers and huginns could be used similarly, but are more expensive.
As far as caps go, Ive heard of Rorquals being used to rat with in the drone regions. Long range tractor beam + drone damage bonus lets you suck in the drone wrecks faster..and huge cargo means u can rat all day and not have to worry about dropping off at POS.
There's my two cents at ya, also if u just HAVE HAVE HAVE to put ur thanny in a belt....I hope your alliance/corp has sov space and u have a cynogen u can instantly jump to. Failing that, keep an alt in gang at all times in an industrial with a cyno up at all times at a POS in a different system. TBH the whole ratting with caps thing gets better with moms....but thats another story / thread

Depends. You get +6 cap/sec from a 3rd CCC compared to SMC, and cap out about a minute earlier on the exp-hardened variant. Its not a travel setup btw, but yea its down to personal preference.
I've even seen people use trimarks as there are situations where you will go down before you even used half your cap.
