So I've been doing pretty well hauling high margin goods through dangerous space over the last month, and making a tidy profit. But I did get ganked for the first time last night by a pretty sizeable gatecamp with a HIC.
For those of you that regularly do this kind of thing, what are some tactics and tricks you use to dodge the bullet in these kinds of tough situations? Any fits you favor over others? Here was my fit at time of death:
[Sigil, Tarek Jubal's Sigil] Warp Core Stabilizer I Warp Core Stabilizer I Warp Core Stabilizer I Local Hull Conversion Nanofiber Structure I Local Hull Conversion Nanofiber Structure I
Medium Subordinate Screen Stabilizer I Medium Subordinate Screen Stabilizer I Medium Subordinate Screen Stabilizer I
Prototype Cloaking Device I
[empty rig slot]
I know the stabs didn't help me at all, but they saved my ass countless times before running gates, so I don't really want to get rid of them. I've been thinking about fitting a better cloak and then just moving out of range before warping, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something important.
Thoughts?

I think good intel will help you the most here. If you're running the same route most of the time, then take some time to scout the area and make bookmarks above and below the gate, say 200km off or so. That way if there is a bubble, you can warp in cloaked above the gate and come down behind them (assuming they arn't parked directly on the gate.)
Make good use of the directional scanner and look for signs of a camp ahead of time as well. Good luck!

Good advice, I'm not so much worried about warping TO a gate though. I should have clarified. I have the most trouble on the other side of gates as well as stations. I just need to wrap my head around ways to escape most tough situations where I need to align and warp before being podded.

Nothing will save you if your up against a HIC. Best thing for you in that situation is to get a Prorator.

Any specific reason? Higher base speed? More lowslots? I thought about getting one but all I can think of is just stacking it full of agility mods, maybe an ECM Burst and hoping for the best.

HIC is the game acronym for Heavy Inderdictor. There is a special module that only they can use, the Warp Disruption Field Generator. It has an infinite strength; no matter how many warp core stabilizers you have, you can't warp when a WDFG has you targeted. Your only defense against one is to not be locked by it, which generally means you need a covert ops cloak. Thus, the Prorator comment. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Ok cool. Like I said originally I am planning on fitting a better cloak ASAP, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing anything that even if i did cloak and get out of range, could still end up with me in a clone bay.
Things I'm worried about: SB spam, orbiting intys dropping me out of cloak.

In a similar vein, I'm guessing that the +2 WS variants of the transport ships are only for use in escort groups; not running gates?

Blockade Runners are you best option really, but I've been decloaked by orbiting inties and lost one once because of that. Bad luck in that case, I suppose. I fit mine with an afterburner these days because your tank might hold till you can get to the gate...and they might not have a web. They always have a warp disruptor on you though. It really depends how big the camp is. Scouting is pretty essential really for moving goods into the hotspots.

Edited by: Kennys Zombie on 31/07/2009 19:27:02 See if inertia stabs help you more than nanofibers. Keep in mind that you want to quickly get into warp, your speed moving around isn't so important as your time to hit 75% speed and thus enter warp. If your gone you can't be locked and pointed.

Blocade Runners are nearly untouchable in low sec. They are extremely agile and can use a covert ops cloaking device.
So hit warp to. Hit cloak. You are visible for only a split second, and nobody will be able to lock you in time unless you run into something and decloak yourself.
In null sec you have to watch for bubbles. As you try to navigate out of the bubble, the interceptors in the gate camp will be trying to get to your position and decloak you. They are still the safest haulers in null sec.
The downside is less cargo capacity.
Deep Space Transports are not for solo hauling. They will still die to any HIC. Their only hope is that their tank lasts long enough for their buddies to blow up or chase off the enemy.

Awesome guys, thanks for the tips. I'm going to refit another T1 hauler based on feedback and see if I have better luck.
I also didn't know the trick with inertial stabilizers... I didn't fit them because of the sig radius increase and I didn't want to decrease lock times. But I guess if I'm 250km out, faster lock times isn't going to be as big of an issue.
