Edited by: DNSBLACK on 04/08/2009 16:23:45 "Black Ops is a lot of 'hurry up and wait.' The FC calls for check, and you go into standby. This was one of those times when your waiting at the edge of the seat. You want to jump. Your just waiting for the call."
That was the situation for one pilot as a member of Dirt Nap Squad, the Premier Black Ops and Clandestine Warfare corporation in Eve, moments before its history making BO bridge/jump which claimed a carrier last Monday at 22:49 Eve Time. This is the first known occurrence of an entire Black Ops jump capable fleet downing a Capital ship without outside support. The fleet in question consisted of one Widow Black Ops Battleship, 3 Falcons, 2 Rapiers, an Arazu, and a dozen Stealth Bombers as fire support. No other ships were involved in the kill.
Sometime the previous day, DNS became aware that a tower was being unachored in system KLMT-W. Their intelligence also revealed a Carrier would be jumped in to unload the ships and other valuables from it. It was simply a question of when. Acting on this knowledge, they monitored the Structure Tower watching and waiting for the carrier to arrive.
On the second day, the waiting paid off. The Cynosaural Field Generator ship left the force field and brought the Carrier into system, unaware he was being watched by a DNS pilot in a cloaked Arazu. Once the Carrier was in system, the trap was sprung as Dirt Nap Squad's own Cynosaural field was lit, this one covert and capable of transporting in their stealth fleet. Within seconds, 20 DNS pilots had entered the system via the Black Ops Bridge and began engaging the carrier.
The initial moment of the engagement was tense. It was imperative the carrier's ability to target their fleet be neutralized, as the Stealth Bombers would fall nearly instantly to the carrier's fighters otherwise. The combined strength of the Falcons and Widow managed to shut down the Carrier's offensive capability, and kept it shut down for the remainder of the engagement.
With the fleet safe, the Squad still faced a problem. The carrier was dangerously close to the safety of the Tower forcefield. Ships moved in to attempt to bump the carrier off course and delay its progress to safety, when the Carrier pilot revealed he wouldn't go quietly. Two large smart bombs began to fire, claiming two Stealth Bombers and heavily damaging others. With the smart bombs at the ready, the Stealth Bombers were forced to abandon attempts to bump the Carrier off course.
It was now a race against time. It was vital that the fleet find a way to buy the Widow and bombers the time they needed to destroy the Carrier. The advanced webber systems of the Rapiers had slowed the carrier to a crawl, but was inching closer to safety each second, and something had to be done. Would the carrier pilot reactivate the smart bombs if ships closed to try to bump, or save his capacitor for his armor repairer? There was no way of knowing, but it was clear the fleet was willing to make whatever sacrifices had to be made to ensure victory.
Fearless Falcon, Rapier and Arazu pilots repeatedly entered smart bomb range to bump the Carrier off course. Those bumps ultimately gave the fleet the time they needed to ensure the Carrier's destruction. After a few minutes of sustained torpedo fire by the Widow and bombers, the Carrier's hull buckled and history had been made. A fleet of entirely black Ops jump capable ships had taken down a Capital without outside support.
Moments later the wreck had been cleaned, cloaking devices engaged, and the fleet has gone as suddenly as it had arrived. To the untrained eye, it may have appeared as if nothing had happened, but in fact this was a watershed moment for the Black Ops community. Many critics have cited a number of weaknesses in the design and abilities on the Black Ops Battleship, but any question as to its viability in battle has now been laid to rest... in a dirt nap.

True covert ops is the reason I started playing EVE. I was disappointed to discover that conventional wisdom said black ops ships and true covert assaults were impossible. But They were wrong! Congrats!
I look forward to more stories of Black Ops fleet successes. Having just acquired my first SB, I can't wait until I have the skillpoints and experience necessary to fly a Panther. Thanks for giving me hope for a Black Ops future! Too bad I don't have the SP necessary to apply for DNS North America. Maybe I should move to Australia... |

Nicely done, nice write up.
Question for you - what role did the Arazu play in this op? I'm Arazu capable, but I don't see a role for the ship that a Falcon can't do better.
Thoughts? |

fit sensor resolution dampening scripts, any time that carrier isn't jammed he's not going to lock even a titan in time before the next cycles get him. ------

Well done. I've always seen Covert Ops ships as having great PvP potential, and being able to do something like this just proves how powerful they can be if used right.

That is sooo cool.
The Intakis have an obligation to defend the Federation, but not to assult others on its behalf. |

Nicholas -
Thanks for the response, but is this worth another Falcon (e.g., train up for Falcon vs. purchasing an Arazu)? If this sounds stupid, my apologies, but I'm still wondering.

Video will be released soon of this and many more kills. As for the arazu well there are a number of reason it is used and believe it or not it has nothing to do with the scan res damp ability. The other bonus is more important and the fact you can tank the **** out of it.
