I log in EVERY DAY to check lab slots and bills. I ALWAYS pay bills immediately when I see them in the corp payable list. I also log in EVERY DAY to keep my lab slots busy. EVERY DAY checking bills, paying bills, and checking lab slots. EVERY DAY! Guess what? Sure enough one unrents saying I haven't used it.

Your lease on a research facility slot X at Y has expired. As you have not used the slot the extension you have requested has been declined. The bill of 6335 ISK you paid for extending the lease has been refunded to your account.
Bull crap! I've been using that slot every second for a long long time. Now maybe I shouldn't complain because I haven't been hit by this REPORTED BUG multiple times but it still ****es me off.
CCP I've seen you guys go after people saying they were exploiting when they were flipping a module on and offline in a station. Apparently you have detailed enough logs for crap like they but not enough to figure out these cases where people lose lab slots. Please! It's unthinkable that you haven't resolved this issue. Follow-up with us if it is part of the system to "randomly" unrent lab slots or report on the bug. It's crap service to do nothing.
And while I'm on the stupid subject of stupid lab slots. Why don't you put corp standing into the mix. I.e., I have an excellent standing to the corp where my labslots are so why should they (the corp) rent them to some random dork that might have low or no standing to them. If you are going to randomly unrent lab slots then at least use player standing or something intelligent to rent them.
Sigh. This is getting old.

I once lost 4 slots to this feature in 1 go ..
still sad about it although it was months ago (needless to mention i didnŠt get a slot back in the station since then)

Think of it this way; because CCP have yet to do anything about the number of labs the only way lab slots can become available for rent is through bugs taking them away from legitimate owners. Fixing the bugs would stop even this minimal turnover.
For the record, I still don't have a labslot and it's not from lack of trying. I cant even find someone selling them who isn't trying to scam me.

I had thsi happen 12 times!, before i wised up.
It only happens at the end of a run, some peep say large, but i had it on smallish runs aswell.
Now i always put in for double the runs that I need or more and cancel it when i'm happy and start the next thing

I had the same thing happen. The fix is, as stated above, to put your stuff in for twice the runs you want and manually pull it out when your happy and start your next project immediately.
I believe the logic tree eve uses regarding labslots (explains the bug) is as follows...
rent becomes due
Q. is rent paid?
(N) - unrent lab (Y) continue
Q. is the labslot currently in use?
(N) continue (Y) rent lab
Q. has a new project been started at any stage during rental period?
(N) unrent lab (Y) rent lab
Thus from above I believe if you dont start a new project during a rental period and the labslot is not in use at the end of the same period, you will lose your lab.

i realy hope ccp can find a way to prefent this in the future. (and punisch the asswhipes that sells slots for redicules prices .. damn those slots arent suposed to be sold. but thats my vieuw

I had an apoc BP in reseach for over a month, and just after the reseach ended - the slot was unrented.
I think the problem might be that the game does not recognice that you have used the slot when you research something for longer time than the rental period. So, when my research finished, the game saw that I had not plugged in any research, and the slot was unrented since I was unluck enough to have my rental period run out shortly after the reseach I was doing had finished.
So, might it be like this: the check is not if you have *used* a slot in the last rental period, but if you have *entered* a BP into reseach?
Just a theory anyway.

Yepp - I think this is the issue - and would very mugh like someone at CCP to take 5 min off shiva and fix this...

So, when my research finished, the game saw that I had not plugged in any research, and the slot was unrented since I was unluck enough to have my rental period run out shortly after the reseach I was doing had finished.
So, might it be like this: the check is not if you have *used* a slot in the last rental period, but if you have *entered* a BP into reseach?
Just a theory anyway.

I lost 2 slots this week aswell.... has never happened to me before, even though at times the projects expired before the rent did.
And I am pretty sure that was not the case here...

Well, at least you have had the good fortune to even have slot(s).
Still havent found any free...
Guess I have to wait for Shiva. And learn new places to look.

CCP admited to me this is a known bug after it happened to me. The Devs are working to fix it. The station owners basicly get fooled into thinking you haven't used the slot. Unfortunately they do not have the tools/resources available to assist in returning your lab or finding a new one. They were very helpful w/ looking into and explaining this to me though.
