WE WAS BRUNG UP PROPER !! "And we never had a whole Mars bar until 1993"!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE
1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's !
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.
Even though all the shops closed at6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY , no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.
Only girls had pierced ears!
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...
We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!
RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT
Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's always ruled the playground at school.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL !
And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
... and all before EvE... our lives were so empty
or challenge me to a game... I'll beat you at Chess too - 5 days per move - challenge me

Copypasta is ill informed here. McD's was founded in the 40's and KFC roughly around 1930. Chucky Cheese and Pizza Hut were big hits in the 70's.

In my youth i lived in a commuter town in the UK that lots of green fields inbetween the cul-de-sacs. Though that was over 20 years ago and the fields have been filled by new housing.
The 80's was great. BMX's, Cartoons like Dogtanian and the muskahounds, cities of gold, ulysses 31. Lego, Zoids. I had a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer.
Most of my free time i was cycling around with buddies. The odd territorial fights we gangs from other culdesacs. Nothing to heavy, sometimes an apple fight.

Heh before the days of engine management systems. On a cold morning a lot of cars would not start. But in the 80's cars were more unique instead of the boring euro-jap jellymould designs. And then most cars were rear wheel drive, many with leaf spring suspension that made driving in winter far more fun
I still love Ford Capri's

The 80's vehicles were hideous and underpowered because of the gas shortage scare. Most of the 90's didn't look much better I'm afraid.
I prefer 70's American muscle myself. Even the trucks had that sexy hotrod look.

Ah yes the joys of getting busted doing some wrong getting called on it by someone on the street, Paremts fdinding out about being called on it going round to the person to find out why...then you really getting in the crap when they found out what you had done
Extra points for getting dragged round and being their when the person explained why they dressed you down and hearing "they did what? Just you wait till I get you home!!!!!!!!!!!!" ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

During my last year at high school i often skived lessons to go to the public library to read sci-fi. Never got any bother from the librarians as they thought 'ah good lad reading books'. This was better than what other kids were doing like going to the local pool\snooker club and getting busted. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

Except now if you skip school for ANY reason (maybe you just wanted a day off, maybe you weren't feeling well and the health nurse can't help you because of child protection laws, so you just dont go to 5th and 6th period to go home to lay down) you can go to jail, be fined, be revoked your drivers liscense until your 18, attend a rehabilitation center for 6 months for 'delinquent minors' and go to 'Oppurtunity school' for a semester.
EDIT: And 'nowadays' if that same librarian that didn't say anything to YOU DOESNT say anything to school admins, they can go to jail for contributing the delinquency of a minor, be fired/face sever penalties etc.
And chances are you'd be caught going TO the library anyway, caught in the halls w/out a hallpass = grounds for school suspension (usually a week or more) (they don't use detention these days, they go straight to criminal prosecution and fines) Please re-size your signature to a maximum of 400 x 120 with the file size not exceeding 24000 bytes.Applebabe

I can't provide specific 'sources', but I can attest to these facts as I had to live through them. Take my word for it, I wasn't born in the 70's or before.
Or are you not going to trust my word since its also commonly stereotyped that more recent generations (those born in the 80's and 90's) are now Chronic liars because apparently we don't have as much discipline as those born 40-ish years ago or more. I skipped school a few times in the 90's and all I got was a phone call at home and my dad asking me where I was. The message was usually automated and would simply state that the student in question was not marked down for being in class during certain periods.
Usually that led to detention either after school or on a Saturday, possibly an in house suspension. Aside from the SRO the police usually don't tend to get into school affairs and I'm still wrapping my head around the rehabilitation thing. Rehabilitation for what? Is that like brainwashing you or something?
When I skipped school we road the city bus around since we didn't have a license. Some of us had parents who couldn't afford to buy us a car at sweet 16. I hadn't realized that they cracked down on schools after I graduated and turned the institutions into a police state.

I can see why the baby boomers have been able to run the world so well
What have the baby boomers ever done for us?! Besides build dams, highways, bring about sexual liberation, make us live more comfortably, and made major advances in medicine and technology. I'm trying to derail the thread.

Oh, I can also personally attest to the bolded parts as well, as I was threatened with those exact things in 9th grade after I got picked up by the COPS for ditching w/ a couple of friends (YES WE WERE OUTSIDE ) And got a truancy letter at home, they called my parents, then told me that they would gradually begin imposing these things on me if I continued by 'irresponsible behavior' (I'm a kid, why should I throw away my childhood to be responsible and make the 'grown up decisions'?)
First, they threatened the fines, then they told me the second course of action after the fines would be house arrest and probation for 6 months, then if I continued, Jail time (juvy obviously) for excessive truancy and revokation of eligibility for a drivers liscense until I was 18.
Also, if your caught even ditching once for something as small as a day, the school actually checks up on you to make sure your attending classes. Calling me (and a few friends) up to the deans office periodically for the rest of the entire frickin year 'just to make sure we were in class'.
Wow, that sounds like harassment to me. If they wanna be ****s you should have tossed a lawyer at them and laughed.

The good ol US of A. I was born in 82 and I have younger brothers who are in highschool and actually my mom got one of those calls because my little bro would be out of school and he would lose the notes my Mom would write and she got a call from the school and all that jazz and she was even threatened to be arrested because of him not being in school. Because being a teenager you lose crap all the time it's just part of being young. USA has gone way downhill over the years half the problem is the media I would imagine and all these pointless studies and treehuggin hippie's, seems like you can't take a crap anymore without some study deeming it bad for the enviroment or getting specific instructions on how to do it properly

Edited by: Max Godsnottlingson on 06/08/2009 07:03:37 I hate posts like this! Because I remember everything so well. Yet more proof that I am turning into an 'old fart'.
Mind you, the OP must be a Southerner and/or posh, because we never built 'go-carts' they were always BOGIE'S man, Bogie's.
In my day, we also played on 'the Bombed Buildings' that was the day when the building had been bombed and it was not just a phrase for any derelict building, and that was in the 60's, of getting to school stinking of smoke because we had stood on the footbridge over the railway lines as a steam train chugged passed.
What I really hate, is watching programs like Heartbeat, and seeing some snotty nosed imp in short pants and with a thick layer of grim, and thinking "Crap! That could have been me." Tin baths in front of the fire every saturday night and an outside loo, that needed a blow torch used on it on cold winter mornings.
Bless, those were the days
