Indeed I've doubts with pronunciation of the Rook and the Rokh. My guess is Rook = *Ruuuk* and Rokh = *Roook*. But I'm not sure. And because I don't want to disgrace myself during an important fleet op I better ask before

Rokh is pronounced /rɒk/, Rook is pronounced /rʊk/.
If that's not perfectly clear, Rokh rhymes with words such as "jock" and "wok", whereas Rook rhymes with "brook" and "crook". -----

Isn't it that Rokh would be pronounced like Row(k), or Rogue? IMO that makes more sense and sounds cooler

Considering Rohk is a greek name for a mythical bird, i say the greeks choice > Yours. Since they came up with the damn word. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Rook is phonetic.
Rokh is pronounced "ROKE" or "ROWK", the "h" being there for the sole purpose of informing the reader to pronounce it that way.
But of course, American English is continuing to veer away from standard pronunciation - so if that is your language I suppose you may choose for yourself.
British people would be incorrect to pronounce it any other way than "roke", however.
Hope that helps. Language is rarely set in stone, with different nations often having wildly different ways of pronouncing common word structures.

I'll refer to this.
For the record, Rokh is pronounced exactly the same as rock and the pronounciation of Rook can be learned at your local chess club. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

The Oxford English Dictionary disagrees with you.
Rokh is pronounced |rɒk|, as is rock. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

It would be if it was an English word that was spelled that way, but since it's a Persian word, transcribed via Arabic, the expected rules of pronounciation go right out the window.
"Rokh" comes from "Roc", both of which are pronounced "rock"

Edited by: Gottii on 07/08/2009 20:13:56 Edited by: Gottii on 07/08/2009 20:11:37 "Rokh" is another way of spelling "Roc", which in myth was a huge bird that ate elephants among other things. This would fit in with the Caldari mythical and/or avian theme.
see: Griffin, Merlin, Raven, Falcon, Kestrel, Phoenix, Condor, Rook, Hookbill, Ibis, Harpy, Heron, Crow, Raptor, Hawk, Eagle, Cormorant, Flycatcher, Tengu, Nighthawk, Vulture, Crane and even the Moa (aptly named for a flightless bird)
Its pronouced "Rock", trying to pronounce "Rokh" in "proper english" is kinda silly, since its an Arabic/Persian spelling.
Edit: what Tippia said
