Why? Why do these sites disappear if you leave them even if there are still npc ships in them and you haven't opened all of the containers? Its just outright stupid and irritating. I just missed out on another mag site because right after I killed the handful of rats guarding it my connection dropped. I got back into the game all of 20 seconds later and the site was gone. So now I get to deal with generic anomaly plexes that refuse to despawn after several days, while the stuff I would like to stick around will evaporate if I so much as sneeze. Please fix this CCP. I already waste a buttload of time scanning down what turns out to be wormholes, I'd appreciate it if I could make use of the plexes I trained up for.

As long as I've known (bout a year?), radar/arcsal sites have always despawned if you cracked a can.
Has there been a change? __________________________________________________________

i use an alt to hang around in plex so it doesn't evaporate.

They've always despawned if you access a can and warp off grid.

I don't see it as an issue given that arc/sal and hacking sites are **** easy anyway.

I've tried several times warping to a mag/radar site, only to find it impossible to do as there are rats around the place which I can't take down with my cov-ops. So I warped back to get my Drake only to realize I'm warping to nothing as the site despawned. And yes, I didn't touch anything at all there with my cov-ops, hell I was even cloaked. But that was enough to despawn the site upon leaving it. And yes I agree, exploring is awesome but it needs several fixed, especially with the stupidity of empty cans.

Exactly. It is a stupidly easy way to make isk. Ive been exploring low sec solo with this 1.9mil SP character for months using a rigged probe to scan and a rupture with 650mm artillery for combat and my specialist hacking/analysing alt in a vigil to do the cans plus my alt is on the same account so I have to use the fast log off/on to switch between them without despawning the site.
Exploration doesn't need to be made any easier, you just have to get better at doing it.

Exploration isn't hard. But it's annoying to change ship everytime you find a valuable site. Some radar and mag sites are left defensless, which mean I don't have to change my cov-ops, as I can just go there and do my stuff. Other times the site is protected, and you can only really find out if it is or not by warping to the site. Now if you do so, and it's protected, it will despawn upon leaving it, which is why and how it has happened with my cov-ops so many times.
This is what makes exploration annoying IMO.

It shouldn`t despawn if you don`t touch cans. I`ve had to warp out from C3 wormhole Radar sites on last waves few times (nasty incoming damage) and they never despawn. But only after I destroyed all rats, looted/salvaged their wrecks I open cans. ___________

A solution could be to setup a ship which can scan plus complete the sites. Its what I've done.

It can be an issue if hostiles come into system.

I've encountered Radar sites with battleships, in high-sec., it's not something I'm interested in doing with a cov-ops. I don't hope you are either.
In WH I have experienced different despawning mechanism. Either Rader og Mag doesn't matter, it seems like you have to either empty all cans or destroy all hostiles before it despawns. But in high-sec., I've experienced many times that you only have to warp to the site, and upon leaving it, no matter what interactions you did, it WILL despawn. And frankly, you have to destroy all hostiles otherwise you don't have access to the can, it doesn't work like that in WH space though.

The obvious solution is to have 1 ship for scanning and 1 ship for combat and opening the cans. I know it can be a pain in the arse to go back to the station to change ship but if you set yourself up in a dead end constellation (or at least one which isn't a major route between hubs) you wont have that much competition from other explorers and you wont be more than 1 or 2 jumps from your combat ship. Theres no reason at all for you to take your covops ship into the sites. But if you keep doing it, and keep despawning the sites even though there is a perfectly simple solution, then you only have yourself to blame.

In many times you don't have to change ship since the site is defenseless, so jumping 5 jumps to get your combat ship, go back to site only to find it empty of enemies, and THEN have to go back to your cov-ops and continue from where your found the site. That is time consuming. What I'm missing is to either know (somehow) that the site is defended, or change it so the site doesn't despawn even though you haven't touched anything in there.

I think the problem is that you are over complicating the process. Firstly, you shouldn't have to travel 5 jumps to change ships. Pick one or two constellations to concentrate on and put your combat ships, modules, ammo in a central system so you are no more than 1,2,3 jumps away.
Secondly you say you change from cov ops to combat ship then go to site and if its not defended you change back. Why? There is no need to take your cov ops ship into the site, put the necessary module on your combat ship. Since a lot of sites are undefended at first and then spawn rats after you have started on the cans you should have learnt from experience by now that doing anything in these sites with something as ineffective as a cov ops ship is just asking for trouble.

No you misunderstand me. Firstly, I do a lot of exploration. I'm max 5 jumps away from my home system, so that I can go back for my combat ship should I find an unknown site or good WH. That's not what I'm refering to however. What I refer to is, Mag and Radar sites are SOMETIMES defended, and SOMETIMES not. Now, I have 2 options. 1. I can bookmark site and go back for my combat ship to do the site. 2. I can go to the site with my cov-ops, but it MIGHT be defended, and thus impossible for me to do as my cov-ops is very weak in terms of combat, and when I leave the site it despawns. That's what is annoying, I have cloak on, I don't touch a single thing in the site, yet it despawns when I leave it, has happened many times. It's a question of luck if you do option 2, option 1 is 100% safe, but very time consuming. So far in times of ISK/hour with exploration, option 2 have been my best choice, but it still sucks when I got no choice but to leave the site because it's defended, not to talk about the sucky thing with empty cans, but that's another story.

Of course we all have our own systems so its best to do whatever works for you. Since your biggest problem with only going to sites with your combat ship is the number of jumps you have to make to change ships, which eats into your isk per hour, I can only say again that perhaps the solution is to not venture too far from base.
The way I did it in low sec was to find a dead end constellation (ie one with only one exit). In my case I chose to make my base of operations in Futzchag in the Mamouna constellation in Derelik, then I would only explore within that constellation - all other systems were 1 jump away (apart from one which was 2 jumps away). This meant that when I found a site it only took me 5 minutes to change ships.
Doing this never really affected my isk per hour rate, also it seemed to me that the constellation never ran out of sites - as soon as I completed one and it despawned it always seemed to show up again in another system in the same constellation.
The only other thing I can recommend is not to bother with Derelik since the cans there contain Amarr decryptors which are not worth as much as for example the Minmatar decryptors, so I ended up relocating to Angel low sec and found I could make a hell of a lot more (also I found that the Sanshas sites in Derelik which dropped the Amarr decryptors are a lot more heavily defended than the Angel sites which drop the Minmatar decryptors so they not only provided more valuable items but are a lot quicker to complete as well)

This I find very hard to believe. I often times take a peek at the site with my covops and the sites have never despawned on me from just visiting them. This, of course, doesn't mean it can't ever happen but I still find it hard to believe as the despawn mechanics are pretty well known.
But if you aren't a masochist, you shouldn't try to run the sites with a covops. You will get hurt (one way or the other) most of the time and eventually lose your precious ship.
If the site is empty on warp-in then you could try hacking the cans with your covops, but radar sites will often spawn the rats only when you hack a can and then the despawn has been triggered. So either way you are usually buggered. You're just betting on the site having no guards (which you can btw deduct from the site name anyway) and your chances aren't usually very high on that.
When I used an Imicus for scanning I used to run the high sec radars with it as the three Warrior I's packed enough punch to clear the rats. Covops ships are just too expensive to risk that way. Nowadays I simply scan a bunch of signatures and come back with my suitably prof fitted combat ship.
Don't know if this was exactly helpful. Sorry. ______________________

Better yet - WHY i it when I warp to a great roid field and bunker in, there are sometimes no rats, yet at other times there are rats. I am constantly flying back n forth to my home station to get Combat drones and/or swapping out to get mining drones ot speed it up. I swear CCP needs to get their sh.it together or else I will rage quit in disgust and without my subscription they will sink into a fiery pit of domm and then the world will end because they lost me as a valuable customer because I had a valued opinion and they never listened........
On a lighter note - I too have been to sites undefended yet I did go afk once (cloaked) and about 20 mins later ships did warp in (NPCs) as if they were patrolling just like hte roid fields. I only do radar sites mostly so I found it odd when that happened. I did a test to another site and the same happened, if I did hang around an abundantly longer than normal time, an NPC would show or , if I did hack something, then doodle round they would come. Sometimes I dont think the sites are undefended, just the defense is out on a break and comming back in ten minutes...
