I have gotten extremely annoyed with running lvl 4 missions with my drake, just so I can save up for a bigger carebear mission running raven. I was in the middle of a 0.4 sec mission when my drake got popped by a manticore with torps. (I also had a lot of rats on me)
So I decided that maybe PvP would be really fun.
I've been searching battleclinc for a nice setup that won't take more than a month to get into.
My first pick was a rifter with this fitting: http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/3546-Solo-PvP-Rifter.html
My corp kinda laughed at the idea of PvPing with this ship, I'd like someone elses oppinion to reinforce this. Because it will only take 8 days of skill training.
My second pick would probably be a Thorax, seems much more powerful than the rifter (not sure though) but it's going to take twice as long. http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/1995-Thorax-1600mm.html
My other two options I've considered would be making a PvP drake or raven. I have almost enough skills to drive a decent PvE raven and I already fly a maxed out PvE passive drake. But I think to turn any of theese ships into PvP boats, its going to take more than a month.
Anyway any quick comments would be greatly appreciated! The rifter is what I'm training for currently, just because I am 100% I am not going back to level 4 missions.
Thanks!

Good for you. No, seriously. For most people it is more fun and that's what keeps people in the game.

The Rifter is, as far as I'm concerned, the best cheap PvP ship in the game and, as much as it pains me to say it, one of the few frigates that can do something other than tackle. And the only T1 frigate given the current state of the metagame. Annoying but true.
But that fit.... Not so much.
Either buffer tank or rep. In either case, at least consider swapping the other for either a hardener, a speed mod, or another damage mod.
The mids are fine.
Don't feel shy about dropping the launcher in the highs to squeeze more neat stuff on elsewhere. A neut wouldn't be a horrible idea either. But don't sacrifice anything else to make sure you can get a launcher on there. Rockets are pretty god-awful to start with....

You get different schools of thought on the undersized gun/oversized plate Thorax. I happen to think it's a stupid idea; go balls out if you want to fly a proper Thorax: medium blasters and a plate that doesn't make you a sand barge.
But perhaps someone might come along and extol its virtues.

Me? I'd just make the most of a Drake. It's great for L3s, half decent for L4s, barely passable in L5s, phenomenal in PvP if you fit it right (hint: don't ever be spotted in a PvP situation with CDFPs on your Drake). And to top things off nicely, the BC skill translates into other races' ships with admirable grace.
So just go for the Drake. Or the Rifter, which you definitely wouldn't regret.

Thanks a lot! You were very informal. I think I'll try out the rifter only because launching missiles have driven me nuts (I like to have turrets, not have missiles fly out from no where)
One quick question, I heard joining a PvP corp is really fun. Any recommendations on a good PvP Corp or where to find one?
Thanks!

This word doesn't mean what you think it means.
Joking aside, try a FW corp if you're new to PVP.

Haha sorry Zhilia, dinner was ready and wasn't thinking straight. Thought it sounded weird though.
And thanks Astro, but what do you mean by FW? I have lost all my Eve Online lingo a year ago.

Factional Warfare. There's player driven corps that participate and then there's NPC FW corps. I'd try the NPC FW corp first. You should be able to sign up at stations.

For starting out in PVP, Rifter, Thorax, Vexor, Blackbird, Caracal, Rupture, Slasher, Omen, Maller, Arbitrator are the usual suspects. Though destroyers (Coercer, Catalyst, Thrasher, Commorant) are also economical learning boats that are cheaper than T2 cruisers but at least give you slightly more damage than a T1 frig.
Wouldn't go PVPing in a BC your first few times out. When you do have the experience and skills and ISK (takes a while), Brutix, Harbinger, Hurricane, Drake are decent PVP boats.

This isnt a bad fit, though if you are looking for a buffer tank would recomend this fitting:
3 x 150mm AC 2's (Barrage) 1 x Small unstable power fluctuator 1 1 x 1mn Afterburner 2 1 x Faint epsilon warp scrambler 1 1 x Fleeting propulsion inhibitor 1 1 x Reinforced rolled tungsten plates 1 1 x Micro auxiliary power core 1 1 x J85 Peripheral damage system 1
This ship has a good buffer and with the 150/barrage combo you can kite the target at 7500 so they will have trouble hitting you, the neut is always a good pvp choice also.

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 16/08/2009 11:12:24 PvP is what EVE is all about.
Now, about ships - Rifter is obviously a good starter pirate ship to learn the basics. Of course you're limited to fighting other frigates, noobs in cruisers and destroyers.
The Rifter loadout you posted is good (also try the buffered 400mm loadout which is also very nice, possibly even better if you plan on fighting short-range ceptors and other frigs). I've scored 275 kills in a similar fit to what you posted (with DC I instead of gyrostab) - just try to fit the cheaper mods (RT plate, SAR II and T2 guns are something you should not be cheap about however. x5 web is best price/performance for a frig) and learn the trade in it. Also, learn how to get your pod out - the 3% small projectile weapon damage hardwiring is beyond dirt cheap, as well as are a few other hardwirings.
Ignore people laughing at you. When your skills get up there (and that happens fast), it's a great ship, and awesome for learning.
The other reasonably priced ships I could recommend are Rupture, Vexor (imo, better then Thorax for solo work), Arbitrator, anti-frigate Caracal if you have very very high missile skills, etc. That will kill you anything frigate sized (bar interceptors, but you can force them off with Warrior IIs) and you can fight on a equal footing with other cruisers, depending on specific matchup.
For anti-frigate work you can pick up a Thrasher as well, but destroyers require high skills to fit and fight effectively.
BCs are more expensive to lose, so I would lay those off until you get proficient with cheaper ships. Also, many BCs require more SP to fit/fly properly.

Can I participate in FW with a rifter though? I've tried to do some research on Factional Warfare but I don't really understand how it works. And I can't try it out until my training is done in a few days.

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 16/08/2009 20:28:44 You can try that or pirating. I'd personally recommend pirating, but you will get -10 and that does have some disadvantages.

For newer players especially FW is nice because they get to skip the whole "no empire for you!" thing. You can continue on missioning or whatever you please for income.
Oh, and WB branko.

Rifter fit looks fine.
It's definitely the best all around t1 frigate and that is a fairly popular fit for it. Probably prefer a DCII instead of the gyro.
It's a reasonably versatile little hull and there's a few ways you can go with it as mentioned.
You could slap a tracking disruptor on instead of the web. You can also use an MSE as buffer or try an MWD fit.
You're definitely not useless by any means.
You can do all kinds of stuff in t1 frigs especially with some friends. You can kill inties and other frigs. You can tackle cruisers and provided they aren't fit to kill frigs probably wear them down and kill them.
The Rax is a decent enough ship but I really don't like the fit you linked.

I also have a particular dislike for the 1600 plate Thorax. If you're going to use undersized guns might as well just fly a Vexor so you're at least using the better bonus. The Rifter on the other hand is a great choice and what a lot of my friends started out with.

You can do a 1600 / medium guns fit.
1600 / DCII / RCUII / MFSII * 0-2 / EANMII * 0-2 // MWD / scram / web // Heavy Electrons
I agree about drone boats for small gun fits. Vexor and especially arbie are nice.

Hey guys, got another question.
Basically, I have another 8 days of training, and I miss eve a lot! So I was wondering if I can still be successful flying with 200mm auto cannons I's instead of II's and a warp scrambler I instead of II.
Will the T1 weapons really lower my chance at PvP success? Or is it still worth temporarily playing around with?

Obviusly T2 are better than t1, but considering the cost of the ship i dont see the point to not begin pvp'ing with cheap modules. COnsider that you will loose ships, even if you have perfect fittings, skills and u are uber pvp expert. SO starting without messing too much with relatvelly expensive modules is not a bad idea.
Also: there are some popular videos of someone using plain t1 ships with t1 modules ( not even named) and still he is often able to kill full t2 fitted ships. Sometimes practise is more important that plain numbers. ;-)
Oh.. could be interesting for you watch those videos. They are called "Crappage", and he did 3 of them since now ( one for each race... he did minnie, hallente and caldari since now)

Well... it will lower you chance of success but that's no reason not to do it.
You won't always win at PVP and if you do you're not really challenging yourself.
What you might want to do is avoid symmetrical fights where your lower gun DPS would be a deciding factor.
Just bear in mind your lower gun DPS when you're evaluating how the fight went. If it was close maybe you'd have won with T2 guns etc.

'Scout' versions of the 220mm are close to the T2 version of Vulcan 220mms, but not equal. Its important though you use Faction EMP ammo, or else you are seriously paralizing yourself. As far as the T1 Scram, there is a T1 Scram that has the same attributes, but better fitting requirements, so you should be good to go on those.
One factor though you might be considering is cost. If cheap is something you need to factor in, then by all means go named T1, using either Carbines or Gallium named. Again, you are less likely to succeed.. but you may be able to balance that using surprise and good tactics.
I only do diplomancy because I haven't found you.. yet. |
