Evening,
So I'm looking at where to focus my training next, and I've been pondering about command ships, namely the Astarte or Eos, as I fly gallente. I've been perusing some setups that look interesting, but I keep coming across a general vibe that cs' just simply aren't worth it. So this is what I'm wanting to get some views on (the other threads were closed), are command ships worth the time and isk for nullsec pvp?
Will check back in the morning, nn.

Generally no.
The fleet CS (clay/vulture/damnation/eos) are useful, though. Sit in a safespot with 3 links with mindlinks etc and bonus your maties. Usually a task best left for an alt.

Could you clarify what you mean by "worth it?"
They are uninsurable and awful expensive but the abso is sex to fly. Also the poster above me is correct - the mindlinked damnation/clay/eos/vulture are EXCELLENT fleet ships and your friends will love you for training them.

While slightly unconventional, in fast moving (remote) shield tanked gangs the Astarte packs a tremendous punch.
Slap on 2 LSE + EM-rigs, 4 Magstabs and a rack of neutrons, kicks out 1200+ dps on overheat.

If you use command ships the way they are designed to be used, yes they are worth it. -- Warezmy Carr's Skills: Here |

They are lovely for small gangs, and to use for raiding wormholes Personally, I can't to think of a ship I like flying more then the Astarte
But that's without cost efficiency taken into account :p |

Astarte packs a huge punch, thats for sure. Tho its more or less a pimped brutix imo. A bit easier to tank tho.

If you have fun in them, yes. Are they well suited for that task? No.
Fleet commands have a role in big fleets. Field commands have a role in smaller/medium sized fleets. They're not very cost efficient, you can get alot of what they offer out of a BC instead.. but they do have situations where they're highly useful. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

Well I very much enjoy battlecruiser combat, and as I've had my eye on the cs' for a while, I guess the thing to do is to train them and have a go myself.
Thanks for the input guys

I didn't think CS were that expensive, comparatively?
Think about it...Zealot costs about what nowadays....130ish mill? Absolution is like 180ish, if I remember correctly? That's really not that bad.

If you're going to do that, it should be 7 links. __________________________________________________________

The four mindlinks all go in slot 10, so you can only fit one mindlink at a time.

When you compare it to an insurable BS, it is :). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In general: No. But if you are a die hard solo Pvp'er, then I'd say yes. More expensive too lose then a BS, but (coming from an Amarr perspective) medium lasers are generally easier to manage to kill something with solo.

As someone with Command Ships 5, Maxed Leadership/Warfare link skills... I can honestly say... No! Definately not Gallente command ships anyway.
Typically if you show up to a fleet in an Eos there's plenty of others with those skills too, flying Absolutionss/Damnations/Vultures all generally more useful than the Eos. A marvellously redundant ship for months of training - needs 5 Ogre IIs/Sentries again IMHO!
If you show up to a small gang in an Astarte you're going to probably get neuted/ECM'd to hell out of pure fear of your DPS...and often lose your 150 Mil pimp-mobile for a little bit more effectiveness than a 10 Mil fitted Brutix.
In all honesty I'd say train a Battleship first then when you're bored of flying BS and nicely wealthy - train for Command ships.

I've flown CSs for years, and fly all of them except the Gallente ones. In general, they are not worth it. The fleet commands have an actual purpose and can make a great contribution with a medium fleet and larger, but the field commands are pretty lackluster for their cost. If you want to PvP, just fly a tier 2 BC instead, especially the Cane and the Harb. 90% of the effectiveness at a small fraction of the cost...

When you compare survivalability its bad :X Abso will be quite often primaried as it has weaker tank than BS and deals almost as much damage. Plus its slower than zealot and has to engage at closer ranges.
EDIT: as for pivipi CS: i fly gall, amarr, minnie (caldari on alt but dont pvp with NH ;p). And as people above said: they are fun item when you are bored but thats it. 2007 was the year of command ships, later on BS took over their "roles". Still in W-space or for fast ganks they are good and sleipnir can still roam in small gangs due to nice speed.

A quick glance at the market says they're worth it, for any meaningful value of "worth."

Yes, I didn't mean concurrently, but the corresponding link.
And yes, you can also fit 7 links at the same time if you'd like. You're paper thin though, so I'd only use it if it's in friendly territory.

I'd fly the Sleipnir if it had the sexy Hurricane hull with the same paintjob. That'd be worth it ;)
