I just whipped up a spreadsheet to calculate the profit from ore after it would be refined at 100%. In Jita, if I was to buy ore off sell orders, I would lose money in the refining. This means that I would have been better off just buying the raw minerals off the market. Is there a purpose I am missing to buying lets say veldspar at a net loss? Not a single sell order in Jita for veld, scordite, pyro, or plag was profitable (when refining). |

thats why you use buy orders to get minerals
Duh.
oh and before you bring it up I will also anser the counter to that
thats why you have "Buy order" alts with the apropreate "Trade skills" maxed.

You need raw ore in a lot of storyline missions. The refining value is of no interest when you need 8000 units of whatever to get a 24m ISK implant.

This. The only time I buy ore on the market is when I need it for one of the SL missions.

I think the better question is "Why would you buy ore in JITA?"
I buy and refine a lot of ore, and it has made me exceedingly rich. Bump up your trade and refine skills and get the hell out of Caldari space. Now THAT is 'nuff said. |

I will sometimes acquire a very small quantity of raw ore to fill a refine block. Say I mine 1.5 million units of Veldspar, then refine it and end up with 328 units leftover, I'll simply buy a quick 5 units of Veld to make up that last 333 units. I will sometimes sell a block of ore on the market at a station (at a large markup, of course) for this express purpose...

The buy orders on the market are there because the purchaser is able to refine without waste or tax and at max refine yield, depending on the age of the order they're getting the minerals from the ore at below market costs.
Check out my spreadsheet and see what 0.01 difference makes to the value (not price) of each ore.

what do you know. some miner was nice enough to put 360,000 units of kernite on the marker in the very same station where my SL agent was and it wasn't tremendously overpriced. unfortunately, dumb agent only gave me a standard social implant as my reward. hopefully I will have better luck next time.

But you used it for a mission not to refine, sell and then buy from a cheaper source.
To be Frank - I don't know much. Besides it might have saved you a few thousand isk at most and who cares about that?
