I just bought a new ATI Radeon x800 but my performance hasn't improved what I expected from my old card (GeForce 4 MX420).
I have: P4 2.0a GHz 512MB RAM 80GB HD AGP 4x
I've tried the changes suggested in the sticky to increase FPS, but I'm still only getting 15-20, not much more than my old card. I have the updated drivers from the ATI site.
Anyone have any other ideas as to how to increase my performance?
Thanks!

ok, you have shifted the bottle neck from the graphics card to your CPU, Memory & Mobo.
The current range of GCards at the top end need a top end CPU to get the most out of them.
Next in line for an upgrade would be a new 3GHz CPU (reccomend AMD 64 3700) and new ram to match the higher bus speed. This will all need a noew motherbaord as well.
Welcome to upgrade city.

Edited by: Kai Duracknar on 11/10/2004 19:43:16 Yup. Your loverly new card ( and it a supurb card, I know, cause I got one) is TOO good, well at for your current spec..
Just as a side note have you read the posts on increasing your FPS? I got far better Fps after following them..

Whilst I agree that logically speaking, if a new uber graphics card doesn't yield significant fps increase, the bottleneck must lay elsewhere. However, I too have just upgraded my Radeon 9700 (not uber) to an X800XT (very uber) and have seen little increase in fps. What concerns me is that the rest of my machine is pretty reasonable:
A7N8X Delux Mobo (Rev.1 latest BIOS) Athlon XP 2700 (Thoroughbred core 2.2GHz) 2 x 512MB PC2700 (DDR333) Memory 2 x 80GB SATA (Raid 0 - Striped)
I've check fps using the in-game monitor (CTRL-SHIFT-ALT-M) and _never_ see the frame rate go above 32fps. I've tweaked prefs.ini (changed buffersize to 512, half system memory), disabled "sun occluded" and even tried disabling the sound card (CTRL-SHIFT-ALT-F12) but still no joy. In a nutshell, I've gone through the recommendations in the "Boost your FPS" thread but nothing seems to have made a difference.
Incidentally, 3DMark03/05, Aquamark and even the CS-Source Video Stress Test all report expected numbers for this configuration (15K/4.5K/35K/90fps) which is why I think the problem is EVE specific. Oh yes, I've got Direct X 9.0c and the latest ATI 4.1 drivers installed and have tried running EVE in both full screen and windowed mode.
Anyone got any ideas?

I too have not seen a dramatic increase in fps when upgrading my system from a gforce4 5200 to an ati x800pro. I got about 5 more fps but I expected alot more.
Intel perl 845 mobo intel 3.2E ghz 1mb cache corsiar xms twin 512mg 1gb matched pair ati x800 pro
I average about 32fps. On the shive test server a get maybe 35-37 fps. Again, nothing dramatic.

i dont know how is that possible...cuz at home i have a really slow pc compared to yours here: Amd Athlon 900 Mhz Gigabyte KT133A Motherboard(dont know which model exactly) 512 MB SDRAM Maxtor 120 Gb w/8 Mb Cache Abit Siluro GeForce Ti4200 w/64 Mb RAM and yet i have enough FPS to play smoothly...
and at work i have: Intel P4 3.06 Ghz HT Asus P4PE deluxe Motherboard 2 Gb Corsair RAM 2 HDD SATA Maxtor 250 Gb in striped mode Ati Radeon 9600 XT and the game runs GREAT...dont have any complaints...maybe the new shiva patch will make the game run better on x800 and other high-end graphic cards...

u realy dont need a better graphic card for eve. nerly every card is totaly bored in eve. nothing to morph, just some textures, some shaders and "static" objects.
the real problem is the code. the more data the more laggy it will be. turn off ur sound (use the hotkey) and disable all GUI (ctrl-tab) and ull see how smooth eve will run.
the GUI and sound need far to much processor power. ------------------------- got a problem with my typos? then go to ur mom and start crying :P |

Yep, beginning to think you guys are right. The only real improvement that I've noticed since upgrading the GPU is that the client takes less time to give me control when I warp into a busy system, otherwise everything is the same.
I've also noticed the slight (~8 to 10 frames) increase in fps using the Shiva client. I'd really like to know why the sound subsystem seems to have such an impact on performance as it certainly doesn't give the impression of being very complex.
