I was almost at the end of my skill queue when I had to leave for work yesterday and the server was already down when I got home...I've only got another 5 hours before there's NOTHING TRAINING ~.~ and I have to leave for work in another 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Help us CCP, you're our only hope.

Only 4 hours is not bad, I recall much worse.
Also, anyone else not having auto-patch working?
It is bad, considering they should have catch any issues with test server launch for this allready. If they didint, then their test system dosent resemble real system close enough to be usefull at all.

Ever work in software development and maintenance? I'm guessing that's a big NO. Also, what gets tested on multiplicity and singularity are bugs in game mechanics, not testing out deployment code. I'm sure they have an internal test server to test that on. Testing code on a backup set of equipment and files is NOTHING like patching into your live gear and code.

At least they warned us that it was going down in advance -- I was just expecting it to come back up before I had to leave for work again. They do this at work to...just suddenly everything stops working, then 10 minutes later we get an email saying the server's going down from 10 minutes ago to the end of the hour while they deploy new software...seriously need my Eve fix before I go deal with them ~.~

Meh, it doesnt bother me.
Its much better than in certain games when they release the patch then take servers down with notices to the effect of "Emergency hotfix to put mailboxes back in the game and return X continent to its original location"
All games have extended downtime/patches, usually timed for when there is nothing on TV...its a conspiracy :p
At least I only have to wait this out once in a while in eve, instead of 7-8 hour downtime every thursday morning.

You must not have been paying attention over at least the last year or two at all then. I recall somewhere around QR or Trinity / EA having a couple/few nice, long DT's too. This happens every major patch, and somehow "experienced" players are ALWAYS surprised by it...

Guild Wars devs can patch their game while you play. Im jus wondering how such a no content patch takes this long to deploy. But im not a software developer.

I wonder how you'd react if you sat there in your ship, and all of the sudden, you can't dock up from this big red blob chasing you, because CCP live-fixed a patch that involved at drastic change in your ships mechanics.....
The way the game works, you can't patch live ;)
And no, having ppl download a patch over a period prior to patch-release, is also not quite brilliant... who knows what happens when they need to patch the patch they released ?? hehe :)
Nah, we are better of this way i think.... and for gods sake... FEED THAT HAMSTER!!!

Guildwars with it's Instanced areas and Multiple District set up for towns and outposts allows for on the fly patches and fixes. It's one of the beautiful things about that game. However If you look at NC Softs other flagship MMO's they have to go down for patches and such. It's the nature of persistant world games. You just can't live patch like you can an instanced game. Sad but true. Likely Guild Wars 2 will even suffer the downtimes that other persitant world MMO's suffer since it will be a mix of Persistant and Instanced areas.
And truthfully, the down time we are experiencing really is not all that abnormal for the MMO community for patching. Heck, even Ultima Online suffers from this sort of thing and it's one of the oldest, if not the oldest, still running graphic MMO's around. So is life, get used to it if your new to MMO's, or if you've been around since the early days and still arn't used to it, maybe it's time to find another Hobby.
