Here is a newbie question, what is supposed to happen when you choose board ship? Is this a friendly or hostile action against another? |

Neither really. Usually you would use it two switch ships with another person, or if you hit eject at an abandoned point in the solarsystem and checked out a belt in your pod so the pirates don't shoot you as you lag.
Board ship basically means if you are within 6500 meters, and the other ship is empty, you pilot it.

Board ship basically means if you are within 6500 meters, and the other ship is empty, you pilot it.

Just try to board, if the ship is 'inhabited' it tells u 'target ship already has a pilot'. If not you switch ships.

Also the range for boarding another ship is greater than 6500 meters if you're trying to board from a ship instead of a pod. I haven't been able to find out exactly how long the range is but I've been able to do it from oup to 27km. I also don't know if it's dependant on the ship or not.
You don't really switch ships with another person. You basically just commandeer the ship if it's unpiloted.

Okay so you've boarded an empty ship; now your previous ship is the empty one. How can you tow it back into dock; IE how do you come out positive in the ship collection game.

leave your ship at dock and eject/board from a shuttle

you need to be within 5k metres to board an abandond ship. any ship that has the option to "board ship" means you can capture that ship for your own. it is not a hostile action that will cause condord to want to pick on you. I often capture shuttles so i can claim them and then i abandon them again and hop in to my ship so i can destroy the shuttle and collect the insurance payment. I especially like abandond ships i find in safe spots that are "parked". too bad I cant see the look on the guys face when comes to retrieve his bs only to find it was "salvaged"  ultimate piracy :)
