Trying to make some money now that I am back from a break. Finally got a Drake and running lvl 3 missions now. However, with a 13 month old, i have to drop the game fast to make sure there is no blood or tears ;-) Should I invest the time to mine more? Work towards the retriver or what? I have jet can mined in my Osprey before it just doesn't seem efficient. I need a steady income as I have a good base of skill for the Raven, but not the income for it.
Any advice???

Mining Trading Suicide Ganking Missions Ratting Ninja Salvaging
These are just a few of the ways to make ISK in this game. Figure out what suits you best and run with it. Akita T wrote a nice guide on these forums, I'm sure someone can link it. Signature Locked. Please refrain from amending a moderated warning. Zymurgist |

Have you considered trading in any of its forms?
If you spend time investigating the market for a particular set of items (such as shield equipment), you can discover places where you can buy low and sell high (either in the same place, or by hauling the stuff to another place). The nice thing is that all this knowledge collection is eminently interruptable.

Hmmm didn't think about trading. I guess I just don't get people making 100mil/hr. Trying to see what they are doing differently then I am. I think the best i did was 1.5/hr.
Thanks for the replys!

most drake fits should perma tank just about anything a level 3 mission (and almost any level 4) can throw at you. I did go afk with my drones out on a few level 3 missions to come back to completed rooms, tech 2 small drones are a great skill investment. just watch out on the blockade, just leaving the drones out can lead to some nasty full room aggro.
my drake fit looks like this (only I had named launchers, and 3 extenders instead of a painter):
[Drake, 3 Hardeners and PWNAGE] Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II
Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Phased Weapon Navigation Array Generation Extron Heat Dissipation Field II Ballistic Deflection Field II Ballistic Deflection Field II
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile [empty high slot]
Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I
Hobgoblin II x5
or you can try a passive shield tanked ishtar, I have run a few level 4 missions with one, making note of the trigger spawns and going for them first to trigger the full room spawn and then going afk and letting my drones kill everything else in the room.
the ishtar has a fantastic combo of speed tank and passive shield tank, and around 400 drone dps, I recommend sentry drones (real easy to deploy sentries and orbit them), but for a few missions ogre IIs are also nice. and when you are afk both will work.
My fit looks like this: [Ishtar, AB Passive Shield] Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II
Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II 10MN Afterburner II Heat Dissipation Field II
Drone Link Augmentor I Dual Light Beam Laser II, Multifrequency S [empty high slot] [empty high slot] [empty high slot]
Core Defence Field Purger I Core Defence Field Purger I
for drones leave some room for lights/meds. then 5 wardens + 5 gardes, bouncers + berserkers for angel missions. or maybe ogre IIs + wardens.
I personally can't stand mining, and well afking through level 4 missions will probably make more money then trying to afk mine. especially with suicide gankers out there.

Oh, as for running missions in your Drake - it's perfectly achievable to permatank many of the level 4 missions out there. Some missions you won't be able to, just make sure you read the Mission Survival Guide and keep some of your own notes about each mission as to how AFK-able it was. As suggested above aim for a permatanking ship. That way when you return the most you will have lost are your drones. More likely the drones will have cleaned up for you. Bene Gesserit is recruiting. |

Hmm thats an idea. Since you mentioned it, it said that using more then 1 Ballistic Control System II causes a penalty to the ship? is the penalty something i should ignore? Because i am only running system right now.

Edited by: Janos Ferenc on 26/08/2009 09:53:46 Running more than one Ballistic Control System II does in fact incur a penalty. But it's only to the bonus that each module applies to your ship. However, the penalty is minuscule until after you start fitting more than three of them.
Also, if you're considering an AFK Ishtar, then I would suggest this: Start the mission by aggroing everything in the room with your sentries. Then, pull them in and launch T2 heavy's. Pick something that isn't an NPC to orbit and turn on your AB. Come back in about 20 minutes or so and loot as necessary. Rinse, repeat.

A lot of it's probably down to volume and diversity.
If you're making a 5% margin per hour and you've got around 30m ISK invested at any one time, you'll make 1.5m ISK/hour. If you're making the same margin with 2bn ISK invested, you'll make 100mil/hour.
Two things though:
1) Generally the percentage return you can realistically acheive with greater capital tails off a bit. Doubling 1m ISK is relatively easy; doubling 1bn ISK is a lot harder, since you need to find 1000 trades with the same ridiculously high return and that's not going to happen. If it were possible to find a large return with a high volume, it would quickly be exhausted.
2) I don't think anyone's making 100m ISK/hour from trading in the classic sense of the measurement. It's probably more like 100m ISK per hour spent trading on the average. The distinction is important since trading doesn't actually require your character to be even logged in for most of the time that it's happening. Consequently, if you log in for half an hour to set up orders in the morning, and half an hour at night, and make 100m ISK profit that day then you might describe that as 100m ISK/hour. What it doesn't mean, though, is that you can decide "I'm going to trade for 10 hours straight and get 1bn ISK" (like you could with mining/mission-running/most other activities).

Its not really a penalty, more a diminishing return and the description is a bit misleading. Usually up to 3 modules can be used before it becomes an issue, each one giving slightly less benefit but still better than any alternative.

I wasn't feeling well last evening, so I decided to just mine some hisec ice. Note that this is one of the least profitable ways to earn ISK, but even some ISK is better than no ISK. I use 2 Mackinaws setup for max cargo.
After refining the ice I estimated the isotopes alone at about 26 million ISK (I keep the rest for my POS fuel). Not bad for something that requires your attention once every 20 minutes.

Level 3s are easily done in a drake without much attention at all.
Not sure how much you'd get with salvaging since I'm only doing them with my research character to get standings for datacores, though while I'm used to L4 income the bounties and mission payment from doing L3s are a nice bonus.

Hahaha. Keep the joking up, Dr Lebroi. Mr. Chribba has made a fortune by being trustworthy. Thanks to fools like Mr. Herty, trustwortyness pays in isk in this game.
