In regards to the problems you're having with the character sheet, I was wondering if it might be possible to have the game dump an XML with the character stats to the EVE directory while the game runs so that tools like the EVE Character Manager could just pick up that copy instead of downloading it off the internet all the time. It would likely work for the vast majority of players who play on only one computer, and run the character manager or similar software off that same system.
I realize that there's a lot of other use for the character sheet server, but this might help the most popular use of it.

Wouldn't work for me. I like to use the website character sheet from different PC's than the one that has EVE installed on it.
I've been asking for ages that CCP allow players to train skills from the website version (obviously only ones they have already, as they wouldn't have access to skill books in their hangars) but they either don't want to, or think it would be too difficult to program (given the current problems probably the latter). ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. Seems like such an obvious thing - like the oh-so-brief preview we had of the export of your trade journal.
If the client just wrote out a new copy of the XML sheet every time your skill training changed and things like ECM could pick that up I'd be deliriously happy.
There's still a place for the server serving the page as it has done, but a significant proportion of people would be able to stop overloading the blessed thing.
I believe a lot of the update requests were from users (probably ECM users) wanting to check whether the server had actually updated since their last half-dozen training changes.. Had it updated more frequently, it probably would've seen somewhat lower load. Hey ho.
