hi anybody out there who can offer advice pls?
When im away with work i would still like to play eve if i can, i currently have a rubbish laptop(celeron, crap integrated graphics and less than 1gb memory) and a web stick for my travels, i can load eve ok and can "kind of" play on the lowest settings until it freezes!, basically slow, laggy and can crash eve without warning if i try to fly about too much.
I have invested in a nice new laptop (good spec) and it has a dell wireless 5530 mobile broadband hsdpa thing built in.
In all reality will this give me any ability to actually play eve on lowest settings and a bit of lag?
I know it may not be great but i hoped it might as even my old really really rubbish laptop could do a bit till it flopped!
Thanks in advance for the advice.

It will really depend on your wireless coverage.
I've done some gaming with a tethered cell phone as a modem, and it works relatively well, as long as you've got decent signal. And, of course, your signal is going to vary from one location to the next - largely beyond your control.

Edited by: Chi''kote on 26/08/2009 20:13:22 I don't know exactly your specs or mine, but I use a laptop (basically a desktop replacement) with a built-in wireles card. I can run 2 clients at max settings with no lag, and 3 on max setting with little to no lag. But as above said, signal is king and out of your control.

thats great guys thanks for the advice.
Its a vodafone built in wireless thingy, the one thats on offer with dell at mo.
The laptop is the studio xps 16 with the 1gb ati radeon.
I figured its really down to what kind of mbps i get just wasn't sure if anybody out there had ever got a wireless connection fast enough to actually play properly without worrying about it crashing and freezing :-(
Cheers

When I am away with work (which is almost all the time) I have a 3 year old HP pavilion whatchamalaptop. It has an Nvidia graphics card but beyond that it is sub par. I use wireless internet or the sprint mobile internet thingy I have whichever is better at the time. The results are surprisingly good, mostly non-laggy gameplay except large engagements in lowsec which I doubt is because of my computer, or internet connection unless everyone involved uses such crappy equipment as I do.
There are of course exceptions, but I usually use that as a good reason to check my skills/industry log off and find something better to do with my time.

I have an HP dc7-1264nr and it runs 3 clients just fine. All wireless.

could i just ask, when you guys talk about wireless do you mean on the move sit on a park bench type wireless or the sit upstairs while the main router is in the lounge type wireless?
I mean the mobile type where you use a web stick or built in wireless thingy where you go anywhere?
Dont want to wrongly get my hopes up if your all talking about the house type wireless and not the proper mobile broadband :-)
Thanks.

Cellular wireless = tons of latency issues. You will have a 2000ms ping on average. My recommendation is, mining. Thats it. Maybe some belt ratting or trading. Missions and pvp are a definite no no. ----

missions.. depends i guess. With an overtanked perma-run setup missions wont matter on your latency really.. youd lose lots of efficiency though, but if thats what you do.. *shrug*

well, i used my mates T-Mobile USB dongle stick, & tbh, it worked really well. did my missions with it, as the lag wasnt that bad. responded quite well. i looked at the upload & download data sent, over an hour, i think it must of been around a couple of meg.
but my tip is, get a bloody good signal first!!

I have a sprint wireless card that I use and it works just fine, but you need evdo coverage not the 1rxtt.

I play on laptop only (IBM Thinkpad T60, 2GB RAM, Intel Core 2 T5600 1.8GHz, ATI X1400 graphics). It's good enough, even not in the lowest settings. Once I tried playing on the train with GSM modem. When the signal strength was good (mostly near some bigger cities) it was playable. When the signal faded, it was good to chat only. And risky, because a few times the signal vanished completely and I got disconnected. So, as long as you're not on the move and in a spot with good coverage, you should be fine.
