Here's my solution CCP, INSTALL SOME DECENT FORUM SOFTWARE!
Make it a completely different install, different database and everything. Personally I'm partial to phpBB software, it being open source and all it would be easy to implement, but anything else works for me. The install and configuration time would be minimal as it doesn't have to be integrated into the current system. The only custom work that would have to be done is verify/pick username by entering API info. This would fetch your character and use that as your username, this is only to stop people from impersonating others and trying to ruin or use false reputations on the forums. Using this they could also fetch the current corp/alliance info if they wanted. Then you set your own password, this would be unique to the forums as its not tied to the in game database.
The benefits would be...
- You can change your forum password independent of your game password and at any time you want.
- Cookies would work correctly, current there is some very weird stuff going on with login/logout/cookies not being stored properly
- We would be back on standard BB code instead of this customized stuff
- MUCH better search function when you are trying to find a relevant topic and/or poster
- You can subscribe to topics so you know when a reply has been posted.
- Better (IMO) user control panel
A fresh install of phpBB would take somewhere around 10 minutes. Call it another hour or two to setup all the forum categories and ranks (for CCP/mods). Customizing a bit of the software (api key verification) might take a bit longer, but I'm sure with the number of programmers CCP has on its staff this would not take a long time.
Lets get rid of the forums from 1999 and update things a little please? Can I get some support?

CCP is aware of the lacking nature of their forums and if I recall correctly are already developing upgrades and changes. I think. Its too late for me to go dig up references, I'm about to go to bed.
Anyone who has used forums elsewhere knows that the Eve forums suck.
I'm all for upgrading the forums. However, as stated, its a need everyone is aware of, and I'd rather be patient and have them do it right, than harass them into doing it fast. Because let's face it, right and fast rarely go together no matter how often middle management desk jockeys insist that they can.

If CCP intends on fixing it then I guess I can wait and see it happen properly, as long as they are indeed aware of it. I have no problem with them wanting to do it right, or doing more important stuff first, so long as they aren't simply putting it off out of procrastination or a since of "meh, forums don't matter".

I believe there are quotes floating around somewhere in which Devs observe how ironic it is that they use eve-search to find what they're looking for on the forums because even THEY don't have a search feature to find posts.

I would love to see that quote if you ever find it laying around. Personally I use google and site:eveonline.com, although that doesn't always return from just the forums.

CCP is preparing COSMOS. so probably it will replace forum too.
it i have to agree with you this forum is not sufficent.
