I have recently acquired a Caldari toon after selling my Gallente as I wanted a change. I was used to flying level 4 missions in a Megathron but now I am not really sure which way to go. I have read a lot about the Tengu etc but I am still unsure. Which ship would be best to use, pros and cons etc.
Thanks

Define your view on best. Is the best mission runner the one to -complete them in shortest time, or -the one to pull most efficient ISK/h in the particular region you're in, or -the one taking least effort piloting while missioning, or -the one most probable to withstand and survive a semi afk at-work running?

Edited by: knobber Jobbler on 27/08/2009 09:21:10 If your looting then a Golem. You can usually tractor all the wrecks in a mission without moving to a central point so you can then come back in a salvage fit ship to take all the loot away. This is far slower in a CNR+salvage ship as you have to run around to get the wrecks.
If your not looting then a CNR. You don't need to aggro manage with it, just fire away, even with a generic build rather than mission specific. With a Golem sometimes it requires mission specific builds and aggro management.

I am not too bothered about looting as I go, I just need to know the best ship that will require the least aggro management, when you have children annoying you lol, sometimes it is difficult to concentrate. If the CNR is the best for this, can anyone recommend a fit?
Thanks

Golem can easily field an insane tank, enabling you to go afk or disconnect without risk.

I used to mission in a CNR but stopped when i bought a Golem.. Only advantage of CNR is range the dps is almost half that of Golem.
Im using tengu atm wich is comparable to Golem speedwise, the trouble with tengu is that it eats thru hams at a silly rate, and if u dont use kinetic then dps drops a fair amount.
Overall id say Golem would be the most efficient and quickest runner of the 3

mhhh, to do missions, I stick with the old stuff really. is 1b or more worth doing the same thing you do usually... well L4 missions ?
Just ask yourself how much time will it take you to "get" that ISK back if you get that nice ship ? for me, my plain old rusty raven does the job pretty good. There was a post about all the ISK you could make in a mission inside a golem...time + isk, bounty and ****. well, you need to do a lot..and I mean a lot.

The isk amount isn't an issue, it is more about me enjoying doing the missions and getting the storyline for faction increase. I am not looking to recoup the isk anytime soon but don't have anything else to spend it on. I would rather buy the best ship possible for doing lvl 4 than struggle so on that note, has anyone got any good Golem fits?
Thanks

people seem to like this one. Linkage keep in mind crystal and hardwiring implants really make big difference. so, maybe train cybergenetics to 5 if you don't have in yet.

I lock the children in a basement closet when I play EVE. After 2 or 3 hours they fall asleep....

If you can fly and afford a golem, then thats the way to go. Besides having one more effective launcher than the cnr, and 2 more than a stock raven, it has better shield resists and the tractor bonus.
If you can't fly/afford a golem, then go for a CNR.
From what I've heard, the tengu can easily tank L4s, but doesn't have the dps to make it worthwhile for L4s. But again, that is just hearsay, not experience.

CNR has an rof bonus of 5% per BS lvl which turns the damage from its 7 launchers into approx the same damage as from 8.75 launchers per second when compared to the Golems 8 launchers with no rof bonus.
I've flown 1000's of missions in Raven, CNR and Golem and for a cruise setup and not worrying about salvaging, then the CNR wins hands down imo when you compare the price and skills involved to train up a Golem.
Now, if you wanna train up t2 torps, buy a really expensive Pith/Gistii shield booster then the Golem will do a lot more damage. |

I fly both CNR and Tengu in Lvl 4's and really tailor the ship to the mission. Long range, high number of BS's I prefer my cruise CNR, whilst close range high number of frigs, cruiser the Tengu rules. The Tengu is excellent at tanking / dodging damage as long as you can keep the speed up above 200 m/s. If you get webbed/scram'd you can come unstuck even with a Tengu and as reported before you need a good stock of heavy missile to take 1 mill+ Bs's down.
Plan ahead and enjoy both ships whilst missioning.

I fly either a Nighthawk or a CNR.
I swap between then depending on the mission I am doing.
My CNR can get a pretty awesome tank but the NH is so easy to manage. But the DPS is lacking on larger targets. However, the NH pops cruisers and frigates much faster. So the DPS nearly equals out because of that.
I have Marauders IV but I haven't brought myself to spend 1B ISK on a ship that might be worse or equal at running missions then my CNR or NH. Plus I have an alt salvage behind me so the tractor bonus won't really be used.

Torp Golem if you have the right skills, rigs and implants.
I just ran a BS heavy mission (Caldari epic) with my cruise CNR and wished I had my Golem since it was significantly quicker.
Golem advantages: - built in shield booster - target painter bonuses - slightly better base kinetic and thermal resists - 40km tractor beam range (can tractor and salvage at the same time if you like) - 4 double damage launchers - reduced ammo usage
Use faction (~40km +) and Javelin (~60 km+) torpedoes depending on the range needed.
2 Pith-B small shield boosters gives a very decent tank - cost was 40 to 50 mil each when I bought mine. One Pith-B medium is equivalent - saves a mid slot - but costs a ridiculous amount more (~ 1 billion for the booster (?) - more than the ship!) .

I <3 the golem. with the torps it gets nasty
cruise cnr can be more lazy at times, just lock and shoot not worrying about what ammo you have loaded
tengu, well meh to using anything cruiser sized that isn't an ishtar.

Well I went totally against my own post and bought a Nighthawk. The reasoning was that as I am not used to missile boats coming from Gallente I was not sure how to handle one. Anyway, I pimped out my NH with active tank, Pith Boosters etc and gave it a go. The first mission I took on was worlds collide, and lets just say that something was twitching when i first warped in as I wasn't sure how the ship would handle.
I cant understand why I was even worried, the NH breezed through this mission without breaking a sweat and I cant wait to test it some more. Once I get used to this then I will decide whether to go for the Golem or CNR seeing as Ive now discounted the Tengu.
Thanks for all the input.

What entertains me the most is that Tengu > NH.

Yes and also Tengu > NH on the cost by a fair margin. I bought the NH to ease me into the missile boat Lvl4 missions, I would rather lose a pimped NH than a Tengu tbh.

If you lose a Tengu on a Level 4 mission, then that means you must have fallen asleep at the keyboard to make that happen. Now if you were talking about taking hte ship to anything but hi-sec space, then I could understand.

I dont have the skills to fly the Tengu or Golem but I do fly the CNR and NH on missions. I cant do the following because of lack of skills. I would like to see time comparisons on mission completions. It does not matter if you do the mission or just blitz as long as it is similar comparisons. Anyone have that information on the CNR vs NH vs Golem vs Tengu? Just a thought.

I don't remember the threads that this has been discussed int but it is this:
Mission completeion times only:
Golem = CNR >>>Tengu > NH
Isk/hour is:
Golem > CNR >>> Tengu > NH
