Hi all,
When under attack, does sheep speed, projectory or axis make any difference the chance and or effect of the effectiveness of any of the atackers weapons?
For example, does making a sharpe turn whilst being shot at with a laser weapon make any difference to the chances of the weapon causing damage to your shields/hull? Does moving at a greater speed (without entering warp) change the time it takes an atacker to lock target on you? etc etc etc? (basically, does taking any sort of action involving change of velocity and/or heading take any affect on an attackers effectiveness and effeciency of attack)???? :)
Thanks! Jim. -- Im logistics crazy.. |

yup, they do.
Gnerally, moving faster and at a direct angle to your enemy decreases you chances of being hit alot. Especially when flying a smaller ship then your attacker.
Test it with a friend in the same corporation if you want.

ok... what about shape of ship though? for example, with an Iteron the way to provide the smallest angle of attack is to fly directly towards or away from them - does this decrease in visible angle also affect attacker's chances?

the 'singature' of the ship?... elaborate if you would :)

The larger the 'signature' of the ship the easier it is to hit.
The faster 'transversal speed' (the speed perpendicular to your ship), the harder it is to hit your target.
The higher the 'tracking speed' of the gun you're using (modified by modules and your skills), the easier it is to hit something.
Smaller ships generally have smaller signatures and thus are harder to hit.
Larger guns generally have low tracking speeds and thus have hard time hitting something small or with high transversal speeds.
Make sence now?

You can also think of 'signature' as the visibility a radar would have of something.
In RL, cargo plane has a large signature - its easy to spot on radar.
But something like a bird is very small and wouldn't necessarily show up on radar because its so small.
But even when something is large, like a stealth fighter, its can reduce its signature so that radar can't detect it very easily.
Certain modules in game will change your signature. Like using a Micro warpdrive will increase you signature of your ship, making it easier for people to hit you.

Next time you are in combat or have several entities on your scanner in-game, goto your scanner and press the [Settings button].
The third tab will say "columns".
Goto that tab and select "transversal speed".
Now notice when in combat things with high "transveral speed" are harder to hit.
You can visualize "transveral speed" like this:
If someone is coming directly at you they have a transveral speed of 0 m/s - same if they were directly going away from you.
But if they are going perpenticular to you (at a 90 degree angle), then their current velocity is their transversal speed.
Got it?

Thanks S'Daria, I am now completely transversed on the simple complexities of transveral speed. I.e. your best chance is to head in a direction perpendicular to theirs towards you, and run as quick as possible in said heading
Thanks again, Jim -- Im logistics crazy.. |

Uh, the best chance of survival is to stay the heck out of range, if you can, followed by get out of range as soon as possible, followed by go transversal. The thing with transversal is that you're not moving away from the enemy much, so while you're slightly harder to hit, you're also in range so he'll keep shooting and possibly get lucky.
Either stay out of range, or orbit so close that he can't track you, and these two schools of thought go hand in hand with "pick a type of combat, close range or long range, and maximize everything on the ship towards what you picked: guns, speed, defenses."
