Being new to Eve kinda sucks... I was mining in Amarr today out of pure laziness, and I saw a new player in local talking about how he couldn't find any good belts to mine. I told him to warp over to the belt that I was at since there was plenty of Veldspar there for him to mine (That in itself took some explaining.).
I invited him to join my fleet since I had my alt with its Iteron Mark V out hauling and giving a little fleet boost, and he accepted.
He was flying an Osprey, and I noticed that he wasn't jetcanning (has anyone seen a can flipper lately?), but warping back to the station each time.
This sure brought back memories... that SUCKED. I asked him if he had an Industrial ship and he said no, he could afford one, but really didn't want to spend all his money on one.
Anyway, I figured I'd help him out a little bit, I bought him a Badger Mark II, 3 Expanded Cargohold II's, the Caldari Industrial skill book, the Mining Upgrades skill book, and traded them over to him in the station. He tried to give me 2 mil ISK for it, but I sent him back and told him to keep it.
Anyway, we chatted for a while, I tried to help him understand that when he refines it hes losing a lot of the ore until he trains his skills up more, and also tried to help him understand how to set up a sell order.
EVE, at least for me, had a very steep learning curve, and I really didn't have anyone to help me out or show me the ropes. I figured that if nothing else, I at least gave him a few tips that might help him later on down the road.
So... anyone got a similar story? Its a lot of fun to blow stuff up and come out the winner, but just remember that you were that confused newbie at one point, and a little nudge in the right direction can make a big difference.

Today? Answered questions in this very forum. Where I live we have very few noobs, unfortunately. Low sec really isn't the first place people go. (Although the should ;)) ----- Why doesn't anyone ever read the forums before posting? EVE is a game of adaptation and planning. Adapt or die. |

Strange post op. Everyone who post here by nature helps out new people. That aside I'm mentoring three chaps atm in addition to posting here.

Edited by: Destination SkillQueue on 03/09/2009 09:44:00 I've had a tough time logging in recently (moving/starting university again)......so I mostly answer questions in noob corp chat and roam the forums. I try to be nice to new people and help them when they ask for it. I have been a little more of an asshat recently, on the forums not in-game, then is really necessary, so there is room for improvement.
In game I'm more helpful and try to answer even the basic noob questions. This is mainly with alts, since my main is in a player corp. I also help people with their tasks, if they want the company. I'm always up to some group action and don't really care if it gets me killed or not. Such activities tend to be fun no matter what the outcome.

As a newbie with only two weeks experience, I really valued the advice and help I received on this forum very recently (yesterday, in fact). It's good to know that if answers to dilemmas can't be found when you're alone in space, there's a font of wisdom on this forum. Thanks, and keep it up!

I helped four newbies beat Kritsan Parthus in the Epic Arc.
Then I went back and did it three more times, but this time I stole Kritsan out of the wreck each time and sold it back to them

Invited a few newer players to our corp recently. Its awesome having new players in a corp, they're so wide-eyed and eager, and it gets all the older, nearly bored players back into it!

He was flying an Osprey, and I noticed that he wasn't jetcanning (has anyone seen a can flipper lately?), but warping back to the station each time.
I remember those days. I jettisoned a can not long after then realised how much space they had. Jetcanned for a bit from there, but the transfer range of 1,500m sucked...then thought "A tractor beam to tow the can around would be handy!"
If any of my Corp mates had told me that a LOT eariler, it would have made life a lot easier heh. Also for about a month I could use Miner II's, but looking at the difference bewteen their info, and the info of the Miner I's fitted on my ship, I didn't really see the point of upgrading.
Back then I didn't realise that skills gave you a huge boost, and when I did fit some Miner II's, I was rapt.
While jetcan mining on my own one day an Orca and a Hulk warped into the belt, and I thought "Oh great, now there goes all the ore." and I got a fleet invite. Wondering what the story was I accepted, and was given the Orca mining boost, while the other player started telling me about some neat tricks of the game.
Now I have my own Orca alt, and when I see a newbie, or a solo miner about their business in the belts, I invite them to fleet and boost them, as was once done for me.
