What is so good about it? From what I saw it is a standard horror shooter where you cut limbs instead of shooting in the head. Is there actually anything else to it?

Remember that when you were playing your first horror shooter alot of current players were still in diapers drooling away as they watched large people act really strange around them. So its probably one of the first he has played.

It's fine by me no matter what you enjoy. I love some movies, that by any objective standard are horrible drivel. I just watched a guy play the game from start to finish and didn't see anything I haven't seen before. If it made a good impression to you, by all means sqeeze all the enjoyment you can from the game.

A tad patronising 'old chap'? I'm way too old, but have recently been enjoying revisiting Halo 3, taking up where my son leaves it when he goes to bed on a school night. Each to their own.

The best of its kind. Even beats Biohazard. Well, not by much, but it does.

Dead Space is the first survival horror game I've enjoyed since System Shock 2 (RE2 if you don't count that). I'm surprised EVE fans didn't go a bit crazier over Dead Space. The dark space atmosphere and environment feels like it might as well be taking place on a Minmatar ship. That alone makes it worth it over Resident Evil's emo-kid star and generic environments. Gameplay is nothing revolutionary, but real solid. Plus you can stomp corpses!
I wouldn't recommend picking up for PC, though, or any console-first shooter for that matter. The mouse tends to make them too easy. In Dead Space, it will kill any sense of tension in turn. _ |

This is not possible as Minmatar ships HAVE neither atmosphere nor environment, due to the holes in their hulls. Duct tape isn't good enough for the vacuum of space.
If it's a decent shooter I might be tempted to give it a go, tho if it's FPS I'd rather play with a mouse. Do you really believe poorer console controls will benefit gameplay? Not sure if I'd like survival horror tho Does RE4 count? I found the zombies in Thief:TDP chillingly creepy and the little girl in FEAR had all my hair standing on end. -------------

To me, it felt like someone had made a game based around rez evil and event horizon...but it was good.
You can pick it up for ú10, well worth it imho.

Try Biohazard. There's a PC edition. Priceless. Otherwise I tend to agree, not so many cool survival horror games out there. (Resident Evil 4)

Having just checked the Gamespot review, I may have to retract my earlier suggestion. The first handful of paragraphs alone are rife with words like gruesome, terrifying, bone-chilling, horrifying and more. Probably not for me *shivers* -------------

I felt the same way when reading up on it just before it was released... I generally don't like horror but often can't resist, (much to my regret as I start to play/watch) so I ended up preordering Dead Space anyway.
Expecting the worst I was on the edge of my seat, ran into (or from, as it were) my first monster, dispatched a handful of them. And I felt... nothing, like I was completely desensitised to the whole thing. Playing through the rest of the game was just fun, not scary. Bit of a let-down tbh, but since the game was so entertaining I guess I shouldn't complain.
This is all pretty weird as this is the only time horror has failed to horrify me and making me wish I was doing something else. Yes, I'm a coward.

Sometimes our imagination of what's coming can be worse than the reality I know what you mean about can't resist...like covering your eyes then peeking thru your fingers. How does DS compare with the chilling finger-down-your-spine of FEAR? From the Gamespot review, it said they integrated all usual HUD elements *into* the game, so it's totally immersive...if that's the case, it's strange that you were desensitised to it when they strove, by all accounts, to do their best to scare ya! I'm probably too curious about it now to not pick up a copy, but what you took from it is very interesting
I like how the main protagonist is an engineer. Between him and Gordon Freeman, it's showing that we nerdy few can save the world as well as any space marine. I'm trying but can't think of any other unlikely heroes but am sure there are more out there. -------------

Now we're talking!
DS doesn't even come close. Although FEAR became a bit predictable (bad guys == action, calm areas == expect to be startled by Alma/visions) that whole japanese-style little girl + gruesome deaths certainly did manage to frighten me.
DS didn't really have any of that, it was closer to the cheap Doom 3-style stuff. You know, monsters appearing right next to you giving you practically no chance to get them in time even if you know exactly where they'd appear. DS pulled it off better than D3 though, a lot better. I think the reason that DS didn't do it for me might have been the console feel (can't stand consoles and usually not games designed for them either), especially the OTS camera. All the bad stuff happened to the guy on the screen, not me. The lack of a HUD worked well enough, but didn't do anything for immersion.
Once again, DS is definitely not a bad game, and I know many people who say that it's among the scariest games they've played. We're all different I suppose, and I don't think you'll regret trying it.
The best horror I've seen in a game is probably Shalebridge Cradle in Thief Deadly Shadows. Freaking out from all the noises, and then when you start to accept that you're alone you spot your first zombie. Beautiful. Haven't played System Shock 2 though, that might very well be "better".

I didn't say it was good because it was "scary," just fun, sometimes tense like any action game can be, and always brutal. I think people can be on very different wavelengths in regard to horror games. A video game has never scared me, only thrilled me with a sense of urgency from having no ammo against zombies every corner. For that same reason, I found the horror cut-scenes in FEAR the most annoying crap I've ever endured in a video game. I kept rolling my eyes "Yes, yes, real creepy, let me blow away more clones in the most creative manner possible..."
Just a comment for curious people on my page of gaming. _ |

I think the problem with Dead Space was, after playing a while, you could instantly guess the obvious places the enemies are jumping from.
It's been a while since I played it, but I don't actually remember much of the story there. That tells pretty much how 'interesting' it was for me. Oh well, not a bad game, something between mediocre and good IMHO.

personally I think dead space is one of the best horror games out there today, and it ranks in my top 10 best games ever.
Hell, the first 5 minutes got me ****scared when ***SPOILER*** everything is all calm and everybody have a fancy time, when suddenly a monster kills two of your guys, and another monsters drops down from the ceiling and you go running screaming "WHERETHE****ISTHEELEVATOR?! OKEYIFOUNDTHEELEVATORWTFHOWDOICLOSETHEDOOR oh there's the button, heh that was close OH****HISCOMING THROUGHTHEDOORIGOTNOGUNSINEEDGUNS!!!"
***/SPOILER***

Up to chapter 6 as of last night. I understand now about the atmosphere, it really is quite palpable. My impressions so far...it's exceptionally well polished, the attention to detail is something special. It looks brilliant, but after the first couple of shocks the creepy monsters became things to shoot at. The aiming for limbs thing took remarkably less time than I thought to get the hang of...I basically just aim slightly below the belt , then go for a shoulder if they're still coming.
I upgraded the plasma pistol/crossbow almost to the max and noticed an achievement for completing the game without using anything but...so considering it's my first play thru on hard, I'm not doing too badly. So far it's unpredictable and while the pace isn't *quite* right, it's not far off. I can see the similarities with RE4, but that's hardly a criticism.
For the horror aspect, it's not what I expected, and certainly not chilling as FEAR or that level in Thief:DS. But I think the best metaphor for the game was actually in chapter 5. I'd run thru a door to escape a regenerating monster and stood there, battered and low on ammo, listening to the moans on the other side. Turned around to an empty ICU, and made my way thru slowly, expecting something to leap out any minute, gun aimed thru darkness. Turned a corner to find a stationary figure ahead in the only light I could see. Inching closer, not taking my gun off her, I was surprised to find a lone human, standing, covered in gore and giggling insanely . To find that after the tension and battles with monsters completely threw me, it was so creepy and unexpected.
Doom III would have been worthy of it's over-hype if it had been half as well made as DS. I just hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew by only using noob pistol on hard. Thank heavens for my gaming madskillz. And I can't decide if Isaac's muteness is good or bad...I don't like it, but would having him speak make it less immersive? Anyway, overall, yes I'm glad I picked it up, already looking forward to a new game+ -------------

Meh, fear is **** as far as being horror game. It's fun to play but really scary. Dead space was a fine game, loved the no gravity/no atmosphere part. The story was decent, the upgrading your guns/health/air supply was a bit tedious. The enemies are fun, but most aren't challenging(those fast dudes near the end are interesting), BUT you can drop kick babies and curb stomp. The bosses/ mini bosses were fun and so was the feature which showed you where to go, thank god for that since i hated getting lost in Doom 3.
In short a fine game worth playing(at least the PC version), but it plays it safe by copying from successful FPS.
P.S.: For me nothing I've played since beats Ravenholm in Half life 2, now that place is messed up. The 'Fendahlian Collective' strikes again |
