So I know its been awhile since I played this game...3 years I think. But i remember there used to be an option to turn on and off exhaust trails...now I dont show that option and none of the ship have them. I remember how cool it looked especially on the thorax.
Or is it a graphics bug that I have and just cant see them?

It broke and instead of fixing it they removed them. However, on another note, I now have one of those annoying sigs. |

They had some weird bugs, and caused performance issues.
The Devs have said a couple of times that they're being worked on, and they definitely want them back in the game.

Someone posted up a petition asking for the re-up in engine trails recently but it only got 10 or so sigs.

You get a nice exhaust trail when you are into structure. I think it stays with you if you leave the structure but fix your shields and armor. Does look like you have blown a gasket though Bene Gesserit is recruiting. |

Following from the above it would also go well with damage effects players have been asking for. And even ship logos too and maybe customised paint jobs. Its all down to lag and performance I think but I would have thought with modern graphic cards this is not a big issue.

I doubt the problem is the rendering. If it's lag that's their concern then the problem is the sending of additional data to the clients.
You want to keep the amount of data being sent back and forth to a minimum so all graphics are stored locally on your system while the servers keep track of calculating positions and status.
If you add something like a custom paint job that means you have to send the particulars of that paint job to the client. If you have 10,000 clients online that's 10,000 time s you have to send that information. To properly communicate those pretty paint jobs to other players they'd have to be be uploaded to the server from each client then sent to each client that needs that information (every player in the system you are in) this would have to be repeated everytime someone jumps into a new system.
It's a network bandwidth limitation not a local hardware problem.

Well yes which would explain other games lag out when there's more than about 50 players. They also 'cheat' and use the same textures and graphics for a lot of items but change the colouring. EVE has to handle hundreds of ships sometimes of course.
Maybe there would be a way to reduce the detail when a certain number of ships were on the grid or something.
Anyway I think the CCP graphics people love to add as much as they can so if it could be done they would.

I believe there is already enough info on the client to display trails. I am assuming that a "good enough" trail can be designed using the history of ship movements used to display the ship on close-up views.
