As of late and to blame no one atm but I'm posting a warning.
I've been receiving alot of internet drops, my ISP can not explain, I have not asked them to check security issues as a result, but my paranoia got the best of me to believe, if its not a virus, not the line, not my router, not any game I was playing at any time, or not playing any games at all, to think that I was being DOS'ed at various times of the day, normally late in the day my time.
I know who has my IP. And I suspect that they would do something like this.
I will have my ISP look into security issues other then being a line issue since this has been very recent. And being that my IP is static, I'll have the address changed.
I may be wrong on this, but I've seen people do this to other corps forums. And I'm next to Anue on the most annoying person on this forum.
Hopefully I'm incorrect because as I said, I never looked into this before, but I do know how to monitor this, an my ISP would know how to track the person into a federal crime.
Just as I said, it is only a warning.

I never said this game, I never said any game. I said I know of some that do have my address. An undoubtedly hate me so that would do something stupid like that.
Reread what I said before you post anything next time k?
And yes I have already called my ISP on it and my IP address will be changed sooner then you think.
If that does fix the problemà. Then there is a major issue. Otherwise no one has anything to worry aboutà.
It is very funny however how when I posted this thread I saw a very odd connection and lost internet shortly after. Very curious indeed.

Oh an teknochild...
I'll bring your account up with CCP as a security issue, yes I'm that paranoid. Why would you want to know my ISP? You would then learn the Addresses on each server an use a scanning program to look for my computer name. Unless however I changed my comp name, which would give you a lot longer time to look.
Trust me I know how that network game is played. I used to do it.

As I said my IP IS STATIC, there is no changing it other then what the ISP does for you. YOU have no idea what youÆre talking about. And brings me to believe there is a security issue involved.

If you still have netbios open and available while youre moaning about a security issue, then I wouldnt be talking about other 'inexperienced' people.
Yeah netbios leaves your name open, you can still check if a IP gets a ping on certain chains, don't be stupid.

Boy you challenge my knowledge more then CA does. Who are you an alt of?
I said its static, you doubt me? I did run a server, and still have the same line, an do pay a lot. What do you have to argue against now?
I was pointing out a warning and not accusing anyone, only those that would feel accused are probably the ones doing it or saying anything about it.

Havoc you have a right to be mad but this was the wrong way to go about it.
1. If your being DOS'd you would know becuase it would choke out your connection to nothing until they stopped. Also they are not usually personal attacks, it comes from flaws that are exploited. I have had it happen in BF1942,everytime I tried to play.
2.Its only a federal crime if they cause some $5,000 worth of damage and thats hard to prove.
3. If its coming from overseas then theres nothing you can do anyway.
Change your IP and your done.

Least someone intelligent has posted.
But technically, it's a federal crime from state to state.
Otherwise it's a state crime.
If I netbios hacked someone it would be a federal crime.
However, I never blamed anyone though I'm just ruling out possibilities.

Install a software firewall like ZoneAlarm,Tiny personal firewall etc , it will warn you if you get scanned + it monitors your connection and you can probably check if someone tries to be bad to you.
Like the other guy said , if you get DDOSed you cant do anything with your connection cause its choked to death.

correct me if i'm wrong, because i am new to all this, but can't you just put "netstat -a" into cmd at a time you think you are getting DOS'd and have it show up the IP of anybody who is pinging you?

I had a similar issue about 4 months ago where I was being probed by "myeve.eve-online.com", which apparently was a "mask" to cover the tracks of the attacker. GM's said they'd investigate but I got no word back and the attacks stopped after about a week.
I wouldn't recommend ZoneAlarm because it screws up your internet access when you uninstall it.
I'm currently using Agnitum Outpost Pro.

Software firewalls aren't worth diddly. You're far better off having an up-to-date anti-virus and windows installation and ignoring stuff like zonealarm. Make sure you tweak your windows services, too, to disable unPnP, alerter, etc etc.

Theres a lot of crap in windows that is either hard or inconvienent to disable. Stuff like DCOM and NetBios. If you dont already have a decent network firewall, it would be a good idea to get one of the free software ones. Its usually pretty simple depending on the particular piece of software to either block all windows services or filter the ones that you do use so that only a trusted subnet can get access to them.
Especially in a situation where you think a malicious party is attempting to disrupt your internet access, given how many vulnerabilities that even a fully patched copy of windows has in the default configuration. Unless you are intentionally running a public server of some kind, theres really little benefit from having any externally available services, just a bunch of liabilities. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

I know it's bad to say that but.... did you try unplugging your keyboard ot change your IP ?
More seriously, it would be better if you could avoid posting suspicions on forums and rather post facts. Being a paranoid is not bad in itself, but posting your paranoia is a bit stupid imo. It's nothing personal, but you really should have posted once you're sure about what's happening to u. When I had troubles with my modem I didn't start with the "0hn03b1lh4ck3rs" I just tested, asked around, and finaly found out it was due to phone line (well not exactly but I have no idea how to say that in english).
Dear friendly customer... Can I have your money ?

Get a decent Hardware firewall/router, this will stop DOS attacks as the packets are simply ignored by the hardware. This will also stop your IP address responding to ICMP pings, etc
Your ISP being unable to explain a problem doesn't mean it's NOT an ISP problem - a few weeks ago I had intermittent connection problems, that they couldn't explain, so they came to have a look and my main junction box had been flooded with water and the water-tight seal had broken. No hackers there, just a lot of wet.
A hardware firewall would also log any of these attacks (if they are attacks) and you can then send the logfile to your ISP and maybe even get that IP address blocked from their entire Subnet.

Even if you stop the responses, there is still a lot of traffic coming to the computer, effectively decreasing the incoming bandwidth available by a lot.

Originally by: Missus Bee Get a decent Hardware firewall/router, this will stop DOS attacks as the packets are simply ignored by the hardware. This will also stop your IP address responding to ICMP pings, etc
Even if you stop the responses, there is still a lot of traffic coming to the computer, effectively decreasing the incoming bandwidth available by a lot.

What goes around, comes around bro? :/
I'm not sure if it would help, But could you not assign a different I.P. to your router.. And disable netbios over TCP/IP.

RollinDutchMasters..... Firewalls do not block DOS's

Prosecuting someone who might be DOSing you from overseas is probably impossible (if you can find out who it is, that is), but most ISPs will quickly put an end to it if the matter is brought to their attention, since DOSing is illegal in most (all?) countries.
If you are indeed being DOSed (which seems kind of unlikely to me...it usually does more than just slow down your connection), it is still a good possibility that it is being done through a zombie (a random computer taken over by the attacker). In that case, the best you can do is have the zombie shut down. |
