OK, so I have my Rifter frigate, missile and hybrid turrets, I have shied generators and afterburners and repair kits.
I want to go kill rats!
But what is best, form a short term gang to collaborate with, or a corp. where I am just one of a number.
What are the pros and cons please, someone?

You have to know the diffrence between a gang and a corp , a gang is a temporary thing when battling enemies (NPC or players) Anyone in gang can warp to you , so if you gang up with some unknown people they might use that to warp to your location and kill you just for fun.
It might be a good thing in the beginning to not belong to any corp until you have made up your mind. Joining a corp usually is a good thing , you get more people to work with and corps provide you with equipment and stuff to do , however downside to corps is dedicated time to corp (you give your time to corp events like mining and hauling for getting the benefits in equpiment and other stuff corp provides to you) Corp wars is another bad thing , some other corp is killing yours and that means you arent safe anywhere.

Edited by: Carinae on 20/10/2004 10:38:54 So, as a Noob if I join a corp, would I be dedicated for life and expected to 'follow orders'?
If I think I can go it alone and improve my ship, skills, ISK etc then I may as well without having the burden of not going to certain areas incase I am blown to pieces just for belonging to a corp.
Where as a gang can be short term, flexible and by the sounds of it a bit more fun. But with the risk of relying on a players ethics / morals ?
Think I may go it alone for now until i get my battle cruiser.

If you join a corp and don't like the way they play leave. When you exit a corp you will return to a NPC corp simular to the one you start out in. Its a little more indepth to leave a corp but you can do it.
Many corps can be quite strict. Others basically let you do what you want and occasionally have a call to arms to defend an area. You can get some good experience and abilites from your corp mates and they can help you make loads of isk.
I would suggest joining a medium size corp just to see how you like it.

Don't forget you can be ganked just for being you , you don't need to be in a corp.
Depends where you go .
I recommend Eve University as a starting point.
Severe And Moses was content to dwell with the man:and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom:for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land. |

corp members can use a gang when working closely together .. the two are not mutualy exclusive. so best not to think of them as such.
the gang is a temporary tool used to enable people that are working together to have their own chat chan, to show up on the map, to be able to warp to another gang member, to receive leadership bonuses from the gang leader and allow gang warp. when you log off you leave the gang, if everyone in the gang logs then the gang stops existing.
the corp is a permanent thing and allows alot of stuff that i wont get into.
a gang is a tool a corp is an entity -

OK, all good feedback, so what are the essential qualities I should look for in a Player Run Corp?

well as its impossible for us to know what you need in a corp, the advice i would give is ( a ) take your time - getting it right is important, a bad corp could ruin it for ya ( b ) do a trial or test period with the corp, work with them without joining them if you can, do some ops with them and see if its a good fit ( c ) timezone / activity times are important, no point being in a EU corp if your NA ( d ) tax or no tax, forced mining or not, pvp or not, big alliance or not -- there are so many types of corps out there, it can be hard to pick... i would suggest reading the forums, you can get a feeling off people's posts as to what their corp might be like.
I took over a month to join my first corp, the harder they make it to get in the better chance its a solid corp thats been around and will stick around for a while. -
