Edited by: Lord Bentley on 08/09/2009 16:13:48 Hi
I would need some help before i go and drop it. First i bought the control tower and fuel for it, now im ready to go.
1. So basically, when i get to the moon what do i do then? Do i eject the control tower and anchor it after?
2. What sort of setup should my small caldari pos have? I use it as loot storage?
3. Do pos missile launcher use ammo? If they do where do i put it?
4. How much strontium should i put in the pos and what is the max time it is undestructible? Is it 24 hours?
Any other tips & tricks?
Thank you
Respectfully,

1. You must select 'deploy for corp', then anchor, fuel and finally online it.
2. Hangar Array, as many shield resists as you can fit? If soneone wants to kill a small tower, it will die.
3. Yes, in the launcher.
4. What ever time you think will be good for you and bad for attackers.

Edited by: Kat Bandeis on 08/09/2009 20:18:24 A couple things I'd note, since you asked...
1) In reading up on defenses, I've noted in more than one source that missiles are NOT recommended for tower defenses. Most say it's a waste, so I lean in that direction. 2) Many suggest lots of ECM for defenses 3) My Strontium bay (Med Dark Blood) holds a bit over 1.5 days of fuel, so you might as well fill it up.
There are a couple decent threads with recommended setups for various uses; you might do a bit more research. Where you raise the tower should have an impact on how you protect it.

The reason missile batteries are not recommended for POS defense is that they use CPU as well as powergrid, while all gun batteries just use powergrid. If the POS gets attacked and knocked into reinforced mode, everything that uses CPU shuts down, which includes your missile batteries. All other guns remain online and firing.
You did not specify where this is going. Is it high-sec? If so, another couple of things.
1) All POS guns (not missiles) are one size larger than their label. Large artillery, for example, is really a dreadnought-sized gun, and is intended to shoot at capital ships. Small batteries are intended to shoot medium sized ships (cruisers). If in hi-sec, you will never be attacked by a capital ship, so there's no point to using large batteries.
2) ECM is favored for a similar reason. ECM batteries are powerful enough that they can jam almost anything, and faction ECM is usually strong enough that it's almost an automatic jam. Lots of ECM can make the POS incredibly irritating to attack.
3) Now, understand this. Setting up POS defenses is, in large part, like designing a security system for a building. THERE IS NO DEFENSE THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT! Nothing you can do will make your tower invulnerable. All you can do is deterrence. You make it hard enough that opportunists will look elsewhere and minor enemies decide that it's not worth attacking the tower. Any sufficiently strong and determined force WILL destroy your tower. If they're willing to pay the butcher's bill, it will fall.
I hope I have your attention there. Small towers (especially Caldari towers) aren't really defensible. They have such small power grids that it's very difficult to set up enough defenses to actually deter anyone. In high-sec, you only have to worry about it during war time, because anyone who shoots at it while not at war will be concorded. And you get 24 hours notice from the declaration of war before they can actually shoot, which is plenty of time to take the tower down.
If you're setting up in low-sec, it's a wholly different kettle of fish. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

When youdrop the POS, you need some fuel (and charters if in high sec) in your cargo, otherwise you can't anchor or online it (one of those - not sure which). I usually make a trip with the tower and 2 days fuel minimum to drop the tower. You can always go back to station for the other mods, but it's important to have the tower and a little fuel for the initial run.
On Strontium, put enough in it to cause the tower to come out of reinforced at a completely different time - the OPFOR may not be able to field a fleet 8 hours or 16 hours out of the time zone they used to reinforce it. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? How about going to the test server and trying all of this before hand?

Edited by: Ukucia on 09/09/2009 17:51:08 Edited by: Ukucia on 09/09/2009 17:48:56 This advice is for if you're a one-man corp setting up a POS in high-sec.
-Go ahead and anchor a lot more stuff than you can actually power with the tower. The idea is you come up with a "defensive" mode and a "normal" mode. Anchor everything for both modes, but only bring one mode online. The presence of your anchored-but-offline defenses makes you a less appealing target to those looking just to scoop some easy loot.
-If you get wardec'ed by a large enemy (ex: the Goons), they will destroy your tower. They've got plenty of pilots and ships to take it down. So just pack up the tower and store it in a station until the wardec ends.
-If you get wardec'ed by a small corp, you've got a chance to defend the tower.
If you get a wardec from a small corp, here's the most important stuff to keep online: 1. Lab/Hangar/whatever - Let's say you have a research POS. If you get a wardec and take all the labs offline, you're being dumb. The only reason to have the POS out there to begin with is those labs. If you are going to offline all the labs, just pack up the whole POS and wait out the wardec. If you are going to leave some of the labs online, then you've got a reason to leave the POS up.
2. ECM - You need jammers. You can't fit enough guns to really be a threat. So an enemy is going to park some BS's near your POS and afk shoot it while tanking your guns (remember-they're a small corp. They don't have the pilots to do this quickly). ECM will break their lock, so they have to re-target your tower. This is annoying, and makes you a less appealing target.
3. Hardeners - Since they make your shields tougher, it means your enemy has to sit there longer getting jammed while plinking at your shields. Be sure to cover whatever you tower has poor resists to, and add some more if you've got the space while keeping the other stuff up.
4. Guns - You want a few of these, just so the enemy has to actually fit some sort of tank. Because then they can't fit for max DPS and it takes 'em longer to take the POS down.

Can I ask how the charters work? Specifically, they say they are good for 30 days. After 30 days expire, what happens to the POS? Does the 30 days give you 30 days to place the tower or after 30 days does concord come and destroy it or something?

charters are just like fuel....1 charter per hour is consumed
run out of charters, POS goes offline _____________________________________________

I don't know what the 30 days refers to. They are just fuel. I've got plenty in my hangar and some have been there a lot longer than 30 days.
A POS consumes these the same as it consumes isotopes or robotics, etc. If you run out of robotics, the POS goes offline, same deal with charters. Just make sure they're in the fuel bay and everything is sweet.
Try to balance all your fuel so that it all runs out at about the same time. If you run out of any one of the fuel types it goes offline (except heavy water and liquid ozone, running out of those just offlines modules, not the whole POS), so balance them all, so they all run out at about the same time and you can refuel everything a few days before.

As others have noted, a Charter is basically a high-sec "permission slip" by the faction to put up a POS. Each unit of charter lasts one hour, and there isn't any kind of expiration on them. Not sure where the 30 day thing came from. When you run out the tower just goes offline. They're dog cheap so you should never run out; you can also turn in 500 LP for 100x Charters at most LP Stores.
