Getting Into Character
This is grueling stuff. Its psychodrama. Effective if you approach it with a certain intent. You want to drag through the jungles of your personality for red eyed beasts licking their razors clean as they reach for you, this is a good way. There are a number of outlooks on life to adopt that I have found useful. Played correctly, they can be used to give your EVE character that extra spice to keep you alert during even the most tedious CTA.

I did enjoy the exerpts. I cannot however help feeling that any individual who spends this level of time studying 'social engineering' for an online experience should step back a tad. You said that 'reason is a good tool'. The simple fact is that actually when your mother or your partner or the fresh air outside come calling... eve is second best, regardless of any social engineering thesis. |

Non EVE players (I still know a few) ask me what I do when I play this computer game. I tell them I'm a teacher. They usually say something about not playing against the other players. Well, there's a thrill that can't be faked when pitting your skills against another player, to be sure.

Hi everyone. Well its just about Back To School isn't it?
I just passed out the old fashioned copying books like the grade schoolers use (here in America at any rate). One each with a pen (no throwaways) to my RL friends.
A reminder that we're all in school all the time.
And a concession to modern sensibilities: the copy books I bought were not just black and white but also purple green and red and white. Surely its a world gone mad?

The one thing more than any other I'd recommend to any player or corporation that's heading out to nullsec is research. Lots and lots of it. Before you go out there. About the alliance, the corp, the coalition of alliances if there is one. And most of all about the Alliance Executor. In this fantasy MMO world its even easier for organizations to magnify and multiply the faults of their leader than in Real Life and we know how easy it is in RL. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are moving to your new home and these are your new friends. That may very well be so and usually in fact is so. But there's no reason to accept that on face value. Every alliance is an old boy's network and that is as it should be. Just be very very clear about your place there. They don't care that you are such great guys. They want to know if you are useful. And you need to know that about them. As much as you can before you join them. And to you CEOs entering nullsec for the first time, please try not to lose sight of the nagging little detail that your new Alliance Executor buddy would sacrifice you and your corp in a New York minute if that's what he has to do in order to keep his position. And, 9 times in 10, your Alliance Executor is bought and paid for by another still yet larger alliance and Alliance Executor. But its OK. The one thing more than any other I'd recommend to any player or corporation that's heading out to nullsec is research. Lots and lots of it. Before you go out there. About the alliance, the corp, the coalition of alliances if there is one. And most of all about the Alliance Executor. In this fantasy MMO world its even easier for organizations to magnify and multiply the faults of their leader than in Real Life and we know how easy it is in RL. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are moving to your new home and these are your new friends. That may very well be so and usually in fact is so. But there's no reason to accept that on face value. Every alliance is an old boy's network and that is as it should be. Just be very very clear about your place there. They don't care that you are such great guys. They want to know if you are useful. And you need to know that about them. As much as you can before you join them. And to you CEOs entering nullsec for the first time, please try not to lose sight of the nagging little detail that your new Alliance Executor buddy would sacrifice you and your corp in a New York minute if that's what he has to do in order to keep his position. And, 9 times in 10, your Alliance Executor is bought and paid for by another still yet larger alliance and Alliance Executor. But its OK. Even the biggest of the big doesn't get to stay there for long.

What to Expect In Nullsec
Nullsec is fun. Nullsec is where 10% of the players of EVE live and its the place where 90% of the stuff that happens in the game happens.
Its also a lot more challenging than hisec; and more exciting and interesting. Its where almost all the hardcoriest players play at least part of the time.
I was one of the people who was completely intimidated by nullsec and now I feel silly just remembering it.
What are you giving up when you leave hisec? Well mostly you are giving up the luxury of Playing EVE with only half your attention. People as a rule don't attend mining ops while watching movies in nullsec. You simply do not use autopilot in nullse. You don't get to play on mental autopilot either.

OK. So some of you have already read my comments in New Players: Very First Steps on EVE being a gerontocracy. Its true. The pace of training and constancy of one's progression as you go about your other activities mimics RL in a very real way. I wouldn't change it. I'm the kind of twisted obsessive that doesn't mind taking years to build a character, lay my Secret Evil Plans and yadda yadda. To me its just part of what makes it so easy to react to EVE as we do to RL, especially after we've been playing for a while. Just part of what makes the game so intense.
But there's a flip side to this that you as a new player can exploit once you stop being so worried about being new.
Since EVE is so similar to RL, it takes a lot of RL skills to play it especially to play it well. Look at the clues CCP themselves give us. There's a notepad, calculator, and evemail groups.
So what are the short cuts that make the edge that the more experienced players have even thinner?

This includes personal insults and accusations. These are particularly instructive because as we all know, you don't get upset at anything anyone says unless they have touched a nerve. A good agent can tell far more about someone than that person knows about themselves in a relatively short conversation just by tracking these reactions. Bonus Insight: It is awesome, really truly awesome, how much information you suddenly get access to once you can see past your own reflexive reactions. Uh oh. Rant coming on. OK. I'm going to say this once and only once and then get back to being "reasonable."
I don't want to hear it because this is EVE. I know you've played other MMOs. I've played those too. And they were great. But they were made for kids. EVE is made for grownups. You play it the way a grown up plays. With patience. For the long term. And you have the option to play EVE almost entirely for the metagame, and that puts it in a class by itself. It takes a lot of real life skills to play EVE well. Kids don't have a lot of real life skills so they don't like EVE. They need ingame skills. They need to be a 500 Level cybermage and they need it in 3 weeks. They can tell you a lot about how their Sword of the Biggest Male Member works but they haven't got a plan further away than the next 2 hour adventure because in their MMO they don't need one and that's great.

Most of the people who never make it past their trial accounts are people who don't want to play EVE. What I am concerned with is that smaller but critical group of people who just need to hear a friendly voice to explain to them, "There's not much you can do right now in the game." This how a trainer in the first corp I was a member of with my first character in my first month put it to me when I asked him why I kept getting killed whenever I tried anything but mission running. Suddenly the light bulb lit. It was my expectations, my timeline that was off. Not my playing ability. So I asked if I could do any volunteer work to help run the corp. I was told that there was nothing someone with my skill points could do to help run the corp. Now, as someone who had spent much of his adult life running volunteer organizations in the real world, I immediately understood that this was just not true.

You will be part of a team where everyone is respected for the game they play. Lack of alliance infrastructure means we all keep our ISK to buy our own ships and play the game of our choice. We will have to respect you. If we are not running things to your satisfaction and you can't make the Alliance change however it is it would have to change in order to accommodate you, your corp can just leave. You are still in NPC nullsec or hi sec or wherever and you have as good a claim to the place as we, your former alliance. Nobody has to take bad treatment from some feckless geek at his computer keyboard with delusions of adequacy because he can kick their entire corp out of "his" alliance and strand all their stuff in now hostile space. Gentlemen, I say to you with all due lack of decorum: screw that. There is absolutely no reason you have to put up with that sort of thing in your computer game and we won't ever again if we can make this work. And we'll have made something that will demand better EVE play from all of us, right through to the top. Now that's saying something.

Well I've not been a fan of PvP since early in the game but I know people who thrive on it. Step 2: Recruiters and recruits.
Get your recruiters into the newbie systems. You can do this with alts quite effectively. You drop and drag links to your corp into local chat and start bantering. Invite everyone in local to your public channel. for an example of a public channel see our Vomitorium Emporium. Your public channel should be stocked with all your members possible and make it mandatory for recruiters and officers. Do yourself the favor of having only one public channel. You public channel should have all the necessary links, Skillpoint and other requirements, names of recruiters, voice comm info, etc.
By inviting people into your public channel you are pre selecting for an audience receptive to meeting new people. This is so important its easy to overlook. The people who do not want to chat with new people who are not interested either do not accept the invite or they leave. The people are left are a "captive audience" who have given you the first go ahead to interact without which any efforts are almost certainly waste. Let your members know before you are inviting new people for them to have fun bantering with and they will help you just by being their usual wiseass selves.
You job is to move them from local to the public channel, to your corp, to voice comms, and finally to your roster of people who have assignments or at least are showing up on a semi regular basis to stuff.

As an industrial player in nullsec you are going to have to be thick skinned. And have your escape route, one that does NOT depend on any alliance based jump bridges well planned. Make safe spots all along the way. Keep them private. Make them corp safe spots only at the very last minute.
To any alliance executor reading this if you think allowing this kind of thing to go on makes you look like a leader or is helping you build a better alliance all I can say is you obviously know your members better than I do so keep up the good work.

Useless? Well. It depends. How much do you value your time. I mean RL time as well as game time.
The shuttle, along with the fuel we would need to keep our ships moving, is one of the very few things that CCP has handed to us as freebies. In the universe of EVE, where moving every nut, bolt, and molecule of oxygen has its costs, the shuttle is not something to overlook.
First, the things often cost 20-100,000 ISK. Often in hi sec at prices for less than the seller would have got for the ore itself. Of course shuttles are usually used in hi sec but do see use in null as well.
Second, if you have your Navigation to 5, you can get 700+ M/sec. With speed like that, its one of the few ships that can make a long trip using autopilot in less time than back to back episodes of your favorite sitcom. (Leaving aside, for the moment, the question of who has time for TV when you play EVE.)
Third, as far as targets go, they really aren't that impresssive on a killmail.
What I do is make sure I've got shuttles at any base of operations I'm staying at, and use them to go between. Yes, you have to have the money to have duplicate ships to make this work. But it does work.
