By that I mean, is there any place I can build up to a level two standing while in a cruiser? The past two agents I've worked with have asked me to do a mission where the acceleration gate only lets frigates and destroyers through. This is a bit of a problem seeing how I don't got a geared destroyer. Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to where I could find an agent that doesn't send me to a gate like that.

Train L3/L4 in Connections. You'll have near-instant access to a lot of L2 agents.

If you mean doing level 1 missions until you get your standing high enough for level 2 agents, then probably not. You could just do courier, mining, and trading missions to get standing.
That said, there are very few level 1 missions that you can't do in a better frigate. If you have problems with those missions, you probably need to work on skills some more as you will have problems with level 2 missions in the cruiser.

Destroyers take a few hours training and are cheap. Later on you can use it for a salvage ship.

Yea, I just tried to do a mission called "Stop The Thief" I trained up connections and a person at Chelien gave me the mission. I jumped into the area and my shields dropped in about 5 seconds. I'ma just take a guess and say that missions arn't a good place to start. I can't do more advanced missions because they wtfown me and I can't do some of the newbie missions because they want me to use a smaller ship that I honestly can't afford and apparently don't got the skills to make work in the hostile situations. So thats leaves what, mining? I just might not be cut out for this game.

Maybe I just need to get a destroyer again and train some skills up for it. I'm Gallente. Anyone have any suggestions on what skills to train up for it? Sorry for reposting in this thread.
TBH, both this post and your first one show somewhqt of a lack of understanding of how this game works, AND a mindset from other MMOs. Not a big issue, after all you're new to EvE. BUT...You WILL have to unlearn a lot of what you got out of your previous MMO experiences.
EvE isn't about "bigger is better". To label it best, it's about "appropriateness", and using the right tool for the job. A properly skilled and flown dessie like a Catalyst can and does pwn EVERY l1 MISSION that you can get in Gallente space, and quite a few that you get elsewhere, too.
What does "properly skilled" mean? Simply this:
Shoot for every relevant skill for your ship and weapon system to be at least level 3 before you get into l2s and cruiser. Higher the b3etter. For the aforementioned Catalyst, those skills would be:
Engineering Electronics Mechanic Repair Systems Energy Systems Operation Energy Management Shield Operations Shield Management all four Armor Compensation skills Navigation Evasive Maneuvering Afterburner Weapon Upgrades (eventually to l5, and Adv. Weapon Upgrades after it) Small Hybrid Weapon Drones (this especially to l5, soon as you can - Drones are a Gallente staple)
Depending on your total skills you should be able to fit 6-7 125mm Rails on your ship, as well as a 1mn Afterburner. Fit a magstab (if you can, not necessary at this stage), a EANM, and a Small Armor Repairer. Fill the other slots as you wish, those are really the basics for a missionrunner ship. Use Thorium ammo, and set your Keep Away distance to 20K. When you warp in, select a enemy and hit the Keep Away button. As you get within about 24-25K of him, open fire with all guns. Once he's vaporized, move to the next. The average rat in a l1 has about a 15K range, so by doing this you not only kite the enemy, you don't get hit as much. Rinse and repeat until all dead.
Remember as Gallente you are a ARMOR TANKER, use your lowslots for your tank and don't worry too much about the shield. That should get you through just about any l1 out there - once you qualify for l2s you can then go Vexor or Thorax..I'd recommend the Vexor for missionrunning. Just have your drone skills HIGH for it though, as it's a droneboat.

Edited by: Zartanic on 12/09/2009 16:36:05 If your short of cash maybe do the main tutorials again (all 3) this will give you ships and more ISK than level 1's. It will also get you more practise.
Also maybe try the Epic Arc for beginners, its has good ISK rewards too.
Really after the above you should have more than enough ISK to get several ships.

Incidentaly some gallente ships are pretty good when shield tanked, mainly because their purprose call more for increase damage and speed than eWar and tackle. Focusing in armor tanking for gallent its the way to go, but dont totaly ignore the possibilities shield tank can give.

TBH, I've only found shieldtanks on Gallente to be worthwhile on the droneboats (Myrm especially can sport a nice shield tank for missions) - however, at the frigate/dessie level armor tanking's definitely the way to go, which is why I empasized armor tanks.
I've tried it on a Thorax - the result was just horrible. Haven't tried it on a Brutix or a Mega yet, and am still training up sentry drones to fly a Domi..so on those can't say. On a Exequeror - well, I'd never fly one in combat, YMMV.

I've actually found the greatest success on the Tristan with a shield tank. (Tank being a single MSE and a briefcase.) However, on another note, I now have one of those annoying sigs. |

Magstab EANM
But for stuff like this, you should consult the glossary (which was linked from the stickied resource thread, tsk tsk).

If you're working for a level 1 agent you're going to get a level 1 mission, if you do enough missions for any agent you'll get to the very few missions that require a frigate hull ( dessys are allowed ) you can decline the mission so unless you get it again in 4 hours it's a non issue.
Generally for level 1's you want a frigate / dessy , but if you're running a vexor drone style it's a non issue. If you tried hitting orbiting frigates with medium rails you'd run into issues.

Ok something I know a little bit about
Now personally I like owning ship so I keep a stable of various birds that are better for different tasks like I still keep an Atron for all those station to station currier missions so IÆm not risking my Velox or putting up with its 3au warp speed. Anyway on skills look at the certificates; use the certificate planner to see a decent map of skills needed to operate. Try to get core competency this will cover the lionÆs share of stuff needed to operate the ship decently Also look at the gunnery certs for Small and Medium Hybrids, Under defense get armor tanking basic at least. This should give you a good foundation on which to build. I also echo the call to train drones I love my drones and IÆm only at drone 3 at this point but they are great for taking out annoying who move to fast to track frigates.
I also highly recommend training salvage that will increase your isk per mission itÆs not uncommon for me make more in salvage than I get in mission rewards and loot.

NO! Core competency include core targeting. Core targeting its always used as an example of 'why certificates confuse more than help' (it has to high requirment for the basic level and to few for the elite level). Be carefull when using certification planner.

The cert planner also misses a key skill as well (which of course I have forgot) and even expects you to train for bombs at the basic level.
They are still very handy guides though.
Also for ships the 'recommended' tab tells you the tanking style and role expected for that ship. This complements the role bonus you get in the description.

There's a lesson here: don't sell your current ship to get into a bigger one.
If you have to to get the cash together, you can't afford to risk losing the one you're fixing to buy.
If you haven't got a fallback ship, you can't afford to risk losing the one you're fixing to buy.
