Edited by: Nicski on 12/09/2009 11:04:34 I've twice tried ratting in Asteroid belts and each time I've killed pirates in close proximity to other players and ended up with an Aggression Counter. Who is this aggression counter against? I was only firing missiles both times and only targetted the pirates. I'm not sure whether the other player also fired at the pirates, afterwards I looted the pirate wreaks, then salvaged them, but didn't get any warning that I was looting someone else's wreak and it was white in my display.
I only noticed the aggression counter a couple of minutes after it had been running and can't say presisely when (or what I was doing) when it started
Edit: I do mean NPC Pirates.

You are getting it against the faction of the NPC you are shooting. If you are in high sec you are really safe to ignore it.
Also hover your mouse over the countdown and it will tell you who it is against.

Appreciated. I wondered if it was that and yes I am in high sec 0.7 the first time and 0.5 the second.
What I don't understand though is what does that mean, the NPC pirates were already red to me when they appeared and obviously were going to attack whether or not I got the first shot in. Your answer implies if I'd been in low sec it would have meant something significant - what?

Edited by: Zartanic on 12/09/2009 11:45:36 The only practical effect is that the factions stations will fire at you. Pirate factions are not in hi sec.
EDIT: Here's an extract from a guide:
'What is the effect of the aggression countdown?
If you've 'aggressed' (or 'aggroed', from 'to aggro') an npc, the npc and it's faction members will now attack you on sight, although they likely did so before anyway. However, their stations will also open fire. Some aggressive npc factions own stations in low security areas, where you'll need to be careful.'

The aggression countdown against a pirate faction is generally useless. I would assume if you had one, jump cloned down to that faction's space and undocked, the sentries will shoot you. I don't believe they will however, otherwise ratters would have issues when they return to a station, however there is no visible aggression countdown given in 0.0.
